  1. I’m confused…isn’t Dion the bad guy? And airing the false starts hurt him? So it was a good thing?
I can’t keep up with the American politics much less the politics of our Northerly Neighbor. Crazy Canucks!!;)

  2. Rick, the broadcaster in question got slapped for not covering up the incompetence of the then-Liberal leader during an interview conducted during the election campaign.

  3. LOL, bloopers are big business they really should waited for the DVD release of Dion’s Greatest moments of Incomprehension, the Six Volume Set.

  4. aaack…
I went and read article 8 of the Code of Ethics. 95% of the time that broadcast journalists are dealing with the CPC they are in violation of the Panels understanding of that.
Read the press release…there is one section where the Panel stated “its decision to override that commitment was: discourteous and inconsiderate…”
The full sentence from the code of ethics is as follows:
“They will strive to conduct themselves in a courteous and considerate manner, keeping broadcast equipment as unobtrusive as possible”
When you read the whole sentence it’s obvious that the intent is not that broadcasters will always only do things that are “nice” for the interviewee…it clearly is referencing their behaviour while conducting an interview, no badgering the interviewee…don’t stick the microphone in his nose, etc.
Otherwise it could be constructed as a violation of the code of ethics to broadcast any interview in which the interviewee came off looking like a Liberal.
    What a load of garbage.

  5. They also tried to slam Duffy re; mp Regan. Never saw that bit so can’t comment.

  6. CBSC… the Big Media deciding what’s acceptable standards for itself.
Isn’t that a conflict of interest?
Why, then, consider their decisions as having any credibility and validity?

  7. The CBC is running a story calling for Flahertys resignation. Four submissions and none have been put up. No name calling, just facts and the phrase post-traumatic embitterment disorder on the part of McCallum in one of them. I love that one and would give credit if I remembered where I saw it. Ethics seem to be what the Liberals want when they want it.

  8. Good news from CBC.
    It’s Finance Minister Flaherty’s fault.
As I-Iggy’s ex-Boss Liberal Citoyen Dionky said: Bam. Now roll over and go to sleep. (paraphrased.)
    I-Iggy’s John McCallyum is next.
    No mention of Don’s party.
This line is a howler: “web surfers will notice their absence”.
    …-
    “Layoff notices issued at CBC”
“”Viewers, listeners and web surfers will notice their absence as programming is scaled back or cancelled altogether.”

  9. We had a right to know how incompetent the twit was that Liberals everywhere were dying to vote for.
    Murphy did the right thing.

  10. I suppose the fair thing to do NOW(today,at this moment, presently, etc.)would to bring back DION(marble mouth, marble ears, marble head)and have another election.Sounds good to me.

  11. Perhaps some will remember that the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council was forced on the broadcasters by the freedom of speech loving Liberals, in the 70’s or 80’s of the past century.
You see it works somewhat like this:
You can’t control multitude of independent companies. The next best thing is for the fascists to come up with something that will force them to conform to their wishes, hence Canadian Broadcast Standards Council. That way the actual Liberal enforcers in the backroom, as it were, pulling the strings are not to be mentioned.
On the other hand, there is probably not a greater confluence of evil than politician & “journalist”, to that end it may have been a mutual accommodation to benefit both of the low life entities.
You may take a note of the adjudicators, vast majority of them lived and continue to live off the plebeians involuntary contributions, sucking them dry.
They seem to have final say as to the editorial content, if they don’t like it.
Somebody, like Harper of one of his ministers should tell them to take a walk.

  12. maz2 at May 27, 2009 5:09 PM, I love it. They are sooo full of themselves. What a bunch of pompous windbags!

  13. First, that question was not imprecise but was quite clear and well-worded. The fact that there were several verbal tenses is hardly in violation of grammar; both French and English have the same tenses available to them.
It was a simple If-Then conditional question. “If you were prime minister now, what would you have done about the economy and this crisis that Mr. Harper has not done?”
Simple: If were were PM, Then, what would you have done about X (the economy and crisis)…that Harper has NOT done?
What’s difficult to understand about this? It’s a simple If-Then, dealing with X – and refers only to things that haven’t been done.
The fact that a candidate for PM of Canada is unable to speak or understand the language of over 80% of Canadians is not something that requires hiding but is a serious problem that our news system is obliged to make public.

  14. Unbiased journalism is identical to unbiased peer based and reviewed scientific analysis; conclusion first then work towards the conclusion. As young alchemists we called it cooking.

  15. I love the complaint from “Canadians across the country” that “it was understandable that Dion had had comprehension difficulties, particularly since English was his second language.” Particularly since I am quite sure that Anglo politicians don’t get near the same consideration from Quebec voters. There is clear partisanship in the very mentioning of that complaint.

  16. ET, nice to have you back.
I watched the interview several times and I agree the question was clear and the interviewer restated the question in its simple form emphasizing that he meant that Dion was the current prime minister.
Dion had to ask for the repeated takeovers because he did not have an answer for the question proving once again that he could not respond to unscripted questions. Saw the same thing when he was questioned by high school students. He had to get clarification on even the simplest question.
It was very important to show this to Canadians as it allowed them to see how utterly incompetent Dion was and how absolutely brain-dead Liberals had to be to vote for this man.

  17. it seems that Mr. Dion did not understand in the first instance, the word “now” I guess he has plenty of time to contemplate that word, now…
I like to know when an elected official cannot understand the spoken language. It may or may not be “the” issue I decide on that sways my vote, but that these government types tell others what is acceptable or not? please, we’re not worthy oh clowns of Ottawa, get real jobs…

  18. So the point is that because the LIberal leader was shown embarrassing himself, this became a breach of conduct.
However, the daily and innumerable slurs and fabrications coming out of the very same Media were not?
    BECAUSE?
Somebody please get a shovel over to the CBSC offices !

  19. CBSC: Continually Bull Sh!ting Canada
If there was ever a real broadcasting standard in this country, it would be to see that there were no standards. It’s a lie to think that some panel of learned individuals don’t allow their own bias to leak into the interpretations of the law.

  20. Re: Language differences. “Now” and “Non” do sound alike when you’ve got puffin poop in your ears!

  21. If one were to give this pathetic decision any cred at all, how could it be squared with the infinite number of occasions on which politicians have proceeded to ignore a question and given the answer to the unasked question they wanted the focus to be on? If politicians can demand that their TV flubs be protected from public viewing why can’t the public ask that the non-answers to probing questions be silenced also and replaced with a “refused to answer the question” overlay until the interviewee trying to run out the clock stifles himself.
The instances of a politician being unable or unwilling to reach into his bag of tricks to perform on cue must be exceedingly rare. Perhaps Dion should be regarded more favourably by his audience in this case and he should have less concern about the incident.

  22. Ummm, why didn’t Deyawn’s handlers think of buying him and English speaking parrot BEFORE the interview!!!

  23. The flip-side of this interview would be that it was not aired, and Dion went on to squeak out a minority win. Then a month or two later in a very important meeting with other world leaders concerning a question of Canadian security, the PM that can’t comprehend, screws up big time causing us all at the very least, extreme embarrassment,at the worst, loss of life. What then? Would we not be howling, and rightfully so,that CTV and the others, particularily cbc, should have never, ever withheld the crucial information that the PRIME MINISTER of this country has the english skills of an eight-year old? I would be mighty upset,as most would be. CTV did the right thing.

  24. Several commenters above have laid out thoughts similar to my own. Keeping to the ongoing theme, though, this report from the news bureaucracy reminds us of the real surprise. Someone at CTV Halifax saw an important election news story and had the guts to report it.
Some of the people on the ground know the asteroid is coming.

  25. It appears that the CBSC is populated with Liberal party hacks and wants to impose censorship on the media when the Liberal side doesn’t appear in a nice light. Another case for Ezra’s “Fire. Them. All”?

  26. more questionable to me would be CTVtass and CBCpravdas translation of essentially unintelligable garble in most statements made by Borat Dion into perfect english translations when put on the news or into their websites. the live version was nothing like the press release.
the Canadian public should expect word for word translation or reporting. sort of a different version for Obama the uh and ah king of saying nothing . without the teleprompter he is a stammering non descript speaker. his off the cuff remarks are straight out of his butt punctuatated by banal verbal chokes. the MSM translations make him sound like Winston Churchill
I think pravda and tass should be forced to put the actual scripts of Borat Dions speeches into an apology.
“I make the western pipples eads explode with grin ouse gisses.”

  27. After the revolution (election) things may change. With the current rules, checks and balances on the tenure of simple/swivellel servants/board appointees it will take a generation to purge Canada of these parasites…..

  28. The CBSC is irrelevant, unnecessary.
There’s no reason not to have broadcast evidence of the atrocious linguistic comprehension and communicative abiltity of a man who might have become Prime Minister.
It was newsworthy and in the public interest.
The CTV would’ve been irresponsible if they covered it up and would have gotten into trouble, too, with the coverup making them look even more pro-Liberal than they already do.
A truly free press doesn’t have to impose self-or mutual censorship. They use judgement and try to be ethical, fair and balanced, or at least they should!

  29. It seems to me the panel of journalists who came to the conclusion that Dion was unfairly assaulted with an awkwardly phrased question, are as inept at interpreting plain English as Dion is.
Semi literate journalism, yep Canadian for sure.

  30. Yes, imaging the gall of a journalist not covering up for a Liberal! He deserves the kind of beatdown a black guy gets for being republican. You have to force tolerance on people you know. How are we supposed to have diversity if we don’t crush dissent?

  31. Dion is an idiot and the people of Canada have a right to see how his socialist brain works.

  32. Lev: “… the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council was forced on the broadcasters by the freedom of speech loving Liberals, in the 70’s or 80’s …”
That would be a violation of the freedom of the press provisions of the Charter of Rights. Actually, any kind of regulation of news media in this context, including those of the competition or “anti-monopoly” variety, is a violation of a free press and/or media.
I wonder what the CBSC would have said about the ’60s photo of Bob Stanfield dropping the football, when it was the only one he missed in several chances?
