Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

“Barney Frank would love to kill every entrepreneur out there.” – Love it!
Hey, what happened to all those clever ‘Recession Watch’ posts, Kate?
You can’t kill the entrepreneurs…. but you can force them to move, to countries that appreciate their dreams, and risk taking. That is how America, will be beaten down. It’s inevitable. The damage done by the end of “O” ‘s term, will be too great. Their industrial engine will, like he said be a bunch of government run yessmen, playing cover-your-a$$.Not a formula that ensures “the market” comes roaring back.
Bawney Fwank yeah right!
Bernie Marcus is not a prophet but he is very intelligent. I feel sorry for America – and the rest of the world. I keep wondering how this happened to our friends in the USA; then I see it in a blinding flash – the media (the gal in RED on this show is the media) is to blame. The msm in America and Canada have evil pulling the strings.
Canadians have opportunity staring them in the face but will likely choose exactly the opposite path. Americans have decided to kill the geese that lay the golden eggs, Canadians should sieze the opportunity to grab some of those geese and bring them here.
If Canadians demanded that we have transparent free markets, low corporate taxes and only enough regulation to ensure competition: we could cash in big time with full employment, ample revenue for the gaping maw of government and an increased standard of living. Americans are going to be looking for places where they can invest their money and develop innovative ideas – Canada can be that place.
Unfortunately, pollsters want us to believe that Canadians want their own Ivy League Socialist to ‘fix us’, if that’s true then nobody will want to risk their money in Canada while we’re killing the few golden geese that we have.
In defense of Becky Quick, aka woman in red, she is a decent reporter and not much of ideologue.
Carl Quintanilla on the other hand is an Obama fan, fully into things green and AGW nonsense. And as revealed in this clip, at home with the thought of paying more taxes to get more control by government of entire segments of the economy.
There are days, such as this one, where I wish God’s finger would come down and smack him upside his PC head.
The reason that AGW nuts, socialists, and Obamatons have a free run in the media is that the Republicans and conservatives have failed, and continued to fail, to put together a rational and reasonable alternative.
And Sarah Palin ain’t it. Or Jindal. Or Glen Beck. Or even Rush Limbaugh most of the time.
It’s no good to appeal to 30-40% of the population in perpetuity. You have to bring in another 10-20%, and those are the calm normal people who are not ideologues, and don’t want ideologues running the country.
That’s how Reagan did it. Ever republican President since then was riding Reagan’s coat-tails.
Obama did it by convincing these people that he was not an ideologue.
Until that situation changes, nothing else will change.
“It’s no good to appeal to 30-40% of the population in perpetuity. You have to bring in another 10-20%, and those are the calm normal people who are not ideologues, and don’t want ideologues running the country.”
David Frum is now posting on SDA.
Fine Hannibal. Come back here and post that again after Obama’s second term.
“Obama convinced people he is not an ideologue.”
That’s similar to another famous saying:
‘The devil’s greatest trick was convincing people he didn’t exist.’
Lori, I agree with you 100%. The socialists are winning this war both in the US and Canada. The unceasing attacks by the MSM on Harper and Harris before him allied with their lefty groups like the unions and teachers make it so hard for anyone not in the socialist camp to get their message out or run as a candidate.
I am always reminded of the KGB propaganda officer saying their focus was getting the media, MSM, Hollywood etc. and the educational establishment into the socialist camp as once in they would never leave.
A simple discussion we had over dinner with 2 friends last night on David Miller and his challenger in the last election Jane Pitfield, who I know and lives just up the street. My conservative friends didn’t think she had a chance and her message wasn’t clear so they didn’t vote. This is typical of conservatives as we showed in the coalition rally in December, only 3-4 hundred of us bothered to show up in Toronto. Look at how many of posters here in a conservative blog, the best in North America, bail on Harper if he doesn’t instantly do what they want!
How quickly the MSM labelled and blew off the Tea Party which consisted of concerned people of all political stripes. Marcus is right on with his comments about how the tenacles of government will kill the US economy and entrepreneurs.
Weren’t you amazed how Sarah Palin was marginalized and destroyed so quickly and it still continues. I am not saying she is a super candidate but as an example of how hard it is to stand against these lefties.
Dave-agreed.
I was there in the cold at Queen’s Park that day. Were you at a similar gathering Hannibal?
bleet – what happened to the “recession watch” post? Seems Barney “sweet cheeks” Frank, Charlie Schummer, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi didn’t like those posts so they took matters into their own hands to have them stopped.
…so this is how the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
[ps. if I totally mangled that quote it’s cause I’m going from memory.]
In any number of areas, the lunatics are running the asylum. From Obama’s imbecile bureaucrats to Britain’s nanny-state busy-bodies, Canada’s Orwellian “human rights” tribunals to the infiltration of unassimilated muslims who will overturn the enlightenment at their very first opportunity. We’re toast.
I hope we hold on for my kid’s lifetime. I hope we find some place to go where stupid isn’t the official policy of the state bullies.
I couldn’t believe my eyes! cnbc talking common sense! Marcus was bang on-how long can the US beat up itself and survive?
You have to remember that the socialists have been working towards this for almost 40 years now. They have infiltrated public education, universities, bureaucracies, and so on. Ask any 16 year old kid if the government should help the homeless…or 20 year old for that matter…I bet 80 to 90 percent of them will immediately answer “of course gov’t should help them” without even considering where that gov’t money comes from.
I really don’t think we can look at the current economic situation as a recession any more. It is going to be the level of operation for quite some time to come I’m afraid. I don’t see any realy rebound in the near future without significant changes in the way gov’t’s act.
I hope I’m wrong though.
“…so this is how the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.”
I think in the USA it will end with same sex, sex, on recreational drugs in front of a web cam all whimpering in harmony.
The sickness brought to us courtesy of the ‘progressives’ has so rotted the once great free western mind that we will actually deserve what we get for letting it happen.
I wonder what would be a response to the question: ” You are 20 year old, you have just started your first job , you are about to get your first paycheck and someone demands that you pay him/her to take care of the homeless. What’s your reaction? ”
I very much appreciate what Lori is saying and just based on the math alone, she has a very strong case. On the other hand, my sense of David Frum and his ilk is that he wants the Republicans to become somewhat like the Conservatives in Canada these days: Liberal-lite.
Whether it’s fiscal responsibility or environmental policy or whatever, I do not sign onto any party that strays away from making its policies based on common sense and facts.
IMHO the big problem for the Republicans is there dependence on and strong leaning toward the Christian Right. In a practical sense, this general means following a no abortion policy. That doesn’t sit well with the majority of Americans and will continue to hurt them with future election chances.
The simple solution to the decay of our society is to limit voting to those who are NET tax PAYERS.
The founding US concept of no taxation without representation should also work backwards: no representation without taxation.
Why should you have a say in how other people’s money is spent if you don’t contribute to the pile?
I agree with Lori. She is referring to a large segment of the population that works within common sense – and within the US, within their constitution and rule of law. This means that they aren’t political partisans, i.e., Democrats or Republicans. They are Americans.
This is an important group – rather like the middle class, the class of individualists, entrepreneurs, free-working, independent people.
This means that they will vote for policies not parties.
Obama’s actions – and I don’t know who sets his policies and programs because I don’t think he is anything other than an Up-Front Smiling Performer – are geared to destroying the independence, freedom, wealth-making capacity and enterpreneurship of this middle class.
That means that he, to remove this independent class, must polarize its members into partisan politics. So, he will set up a class war where none-existed because he moves this middle class to the lower class of dependents. Then, he’ll set up a race war – where dissent will be seen as a racist action. And, he’ll set up Americans against their history – where he not only apologizes to the world for ‘shameful America’ but sets up a witch hunt against its most recent regime.
All of this is to gain and maintain political power for the Obama camp.
For the record. Frum does not speak for me.
I would say that the closest American politician who speaks for me would be someone like Newt Gingrich, though he has flaws too, and clearly has passed his “best before” date. Still, he seems to be the best American conservatism has to offer.
As for non-politicians? Levant and Steyn speak for me. Not Rush.
I don’t know about class war. The so called democratic government itself is the historical extension of a ruling class from the past. Would any major social unrest happen the breakdown of authority would follow. It wouldn’t be a first time when anarchy and chaos give way to the new and unknown. Perhaps, someone writing a book in the year 4367 will say that the establishment of USA was only a first step in a process that had zig-zaged for a few hundred years.
lori – I’d agree; Frum doesn’t speak for the ‘middle segment’. I think that Newt Gingrich does, and I don’t think that he’s past history. But there are others, such as ..and I forget his name..a young Republican. Sorry – not very helpful. There’s a group, such as Sandford, Jindal and….
As for the pundits, yes, Steyn, Levant – and Victor Davis Hanson, Charles Krauthammer, Jennifer Rubin..there’s lots in the US.
xiat – I fully agree, the Democrat Ruling Class is indeed an extension of the ruling class of the past. It’s quite something to see how 18th c they are in their elitism, their assured assumption of their own intellectual and moral superiority over the ‘peasants’; their insistence on their rule over such riff-raff; their disdain for ‘commerce’, trade, the market’. It’s such a mirror image of the landed gentry of the 18th c..
By class war, I mean a war between this class, who take the lower class within their control..and the middle class. The Democrat governing elite class, to maintain their power, must increase the size, and the dependency, of the dependent (lower) class.
They do this by their socialization and welfare and state-assistance programs. They thus reduce the size of the middle class, weaken it by taking all its entrepreneurial money…and increase the number of people dependent on them, the elite class.
A class war can erupt very easily between the dependent lower class, (kept dependent by the Democrat governing rule)..and the middle class. We can see this already in the vicious attacks against Palin – and against the Tea Parties.
Had a conversation with a little old lady in the grocery store the other day.
Her response to a remark of mine re OBAMA was….he’s a very smart man.
I jumped on that with the ultimate inconvenient question—-WHY?
No response…..
When I primed her with OBAMA’s support of AGW/CC etc…..she said that was good…..WHY….it’s been cooling for 10 years…..she says the arctic ice is melting….Greenland is melting…
How do you know?
—-“GET A LIFE”—-
……….the power of the media….mass hypnosis….
The main principle lefties fail to appreciate is that the OBAMAs/Bwarney Fwanks/Taliban Jacks of this world are profesional politicians (parasites).
Their parasitic livelyhood depends on their grasp of political power….national interests are of little or no interest to them beyond holding that parasitic political power.
That’s their rice bowl……

You mistake was to try to question the delusions of a lunatic. When you infuse questions based on logic which calls into question the irrational delusions of people they don’t think, they get defensive and combative.
If they thought, they’d have to admit they’re nuts.
Really amazing someone that intelligent and pragmatic made it on that channel. I’d like to see more of him on Fox.
Not so fast Lori, the reason the Left-Stream Media has a free run is because they are bought and paid for by the Democrat supporting Socialist Elites who want to destroy American Capitalism; moreover, the LSM take their marching orders from these Elites whose very agenda is to squash Conservatism 24/7/365 and have been at it for over 40 years.
The Conservative message has not changed. What has changed is the caliber of RINO Politicians.
But this lil gem is a zinger; “And Sarah Palin ain’t it. Or Jindal. Or Glen Beck. Or even Rush Limbaugh most of the time. ”
Palin and Jindal ran on a Conservative Agenda and won. Beck and Rush are entertainers. You should not confuse the two; besides, millions of people would disagree with you on this one, especially in the south where Sarah has become a Legend. Rumor has it that Caribou Barbie will be in Wal-Mart by this fall.
“Obama did it (won) by convincing these people that he was not an ideologue. ”
Hmmm, but Obama is an ideologue, he has theories about everything because he has never worked a day in his life. Hell, Obama couldn’t turn a profit in Las Vegas with a Gov’t run whore house even if it had a Liquor Store in it.
Not to mention; having ACORN fill out 10 Million Democrat Absentee Voting Cards, and having another 10 Million Illegal Mexican Immigrants vote sure helps your party win too, eh ?
In the 2000 US Presidential Election the Democrats barely musturd up 50 Million votes. Eight years later they manufactured 70 Million. How do you find 20 Million votes in 8 years legally. The population doesn’t expand that quickly.
Conservatism and Capitalism define a Free Market. The message they send is a good one and a workable one. This present crop of Republican Politicians need to remember that.
Ratt – obviously Obama is an idealogue. But he managed to look calm and reasonable throughout a a grueling 2 year campaign in which he outlasted Hillary Clinton, and looked calmer than McCain in the debates. Gradually a shmuck with no credentials become presidential in the public eye and a reasonable POTUS for a majority of Americans who really should have known better.
It took 2 years to turn a zero into a hero, but that’s how he is POTUS now.
The fact that the Republicans of the past 5-10 years were less than model conservatives and in many ways as corrupt as the Dems did not help any.
With regard to the current Republic crop, Palin couldn’t survive a 2 month presidential campaign without being massacred by the media, and Jindal humiliated himself the first time out in national view. They may play well in their local states (we’ll see if they get re-elected even) but that does not give them national stature or sellability.
Will they do better next time round? Maybe.
Will they convince a majority of Americans that they are not idealogues? I’m not confident about that at all.
The next republican national leader has to deal with the fact that the media are hostile to much of the conservative message, somehow disarm this, and sell himself or herself as mainstream candidate that will work for all Americans, and NOT look like a representative of the fundamentalist right.
Or we are doomed to a generation of Democrat leaders.
The reason I brought Rush up is because so many have recently called him the de-facto leader of the American right wing. He’s a funny guy, brilliant with a one liner, but at the end of the day I believe Americans do not want his angry and vindictive voice to be representative of their view of America. He is a symptom of a disillusioned populace, not a real leader for conservatism.
lori, the u.s. is going to need angry, vindictive, straight up revolution to clean up the mess you folks have made of your great country. jefferson said the tree of liberty must be watered by the blood of tyrants and patriots. which do you support?
It may be a trivial point, but I think that it actually makes Obama more dangerous. The point is that I don’t think that Obama is an ‘idealogue’ in the sense that you people mean it; i.e., someone committed to a specific ideology.
I think Obama is, as I keep saying only and I mean only, a pathological narcissist. His sole focus is on controlling how people interact with him and this interaction has to be adulatory. Or, he won’t interact with you. He has honed his skills at creating your adulation into three tactics: misinformation..where he outright lies and misinforms you; manipulation of your emotions, specifically hope and fear; and, if you disagree with him, accusations that you are bigoted.
He’s been extremely successful in this manipulation. But he himself has no interest in a societal infrastructure, in an economy, in foreign relations. None. He’s not interested in ‘making these areas better’. He’s only interested in your adulation.
He has aligned himself with the Democratic Party because it operates in a political infrastructure that sets ujp an Elite All-Empowered Set of Rulers..over the rest of you who are without ability, power, intellect. This infrastructure suits his need to control, whereas a Conservative or Republican agenda is focused on individual freedom to act and think.
The BackRoom Boys make use of Obama as a Performer, as a slick ‘ Like me and Love me Act’, to rush through their Big Govt Agenda of destroying the American middle class and setting up a trapped, disempowered, impoverished population..who must always vote Democrat..to keep those cheques and benefits coming in.
His anti-Americanism, honed by his wife who is anti-American, and the 20 years with Rev. Wright, adds to his inability to ‘feel’ for America and to serve its needs.
The next Republican leader should emerge in a few months. I’ve speculated that it shouldn’t be too early..Allow Americans to realize what Obama is really like..and have multiple oppositions, grassroots opposition, spring up. NOT any directed by a Republican leader.
The Democrats have been watching for this, and have tried to deflect and deflate that extraordinary Tea Party ..by saying that they were due to the Republicans. Not so ..they were grassroots. And I’m suggesting that the current witchhunt vs Bush is a tactic to deflect the next rallies on Sept 12. Obama has to set himself ujp as ‘morally superior’ to the past and to all others…and he cannot, absolutely cannot, handle dissent.
I still disagree on how Obama got into office, you are giving the Media way to much credit for turning this guy into a Messiah. If we had true Reporters and not Presstitutes the fact the Illegals and ACORN spiked the election would be the headline of the century. Plus, it seems a mute point to debate Obama’s virtues, seeing as how Socialist Ideology is absent of virtue. We would be better served by debating there are 70 Million Idiots voting in America.
Personally, Palin maybe, Jendal no way(I live in Louisi-Yana), but it sure sends the Media into a frenzy, and who knows they could be used as picks, like basketball or hockey.
Rush does a service, but his Illegal Immigration stance is not workable for the South, but he sure knows how to manipulate the Left-Stream Media, plus, it won’t make a tinkers damn who runs on the Republican Presidential Ticket the LSM will lie, distort, and spew nothing but venom towards them. LSM is a synonym for DNC.
And, yea, I hark on about Illegal Immigration, but JHC, we only mustard up 50 Million votes in 2008 if the Democrats legalize 10 million illegals and subsidize ACORN then yes the Republicans are doomed for quite sometime.
The good part is, I’m not to old to recover from this, plus there is still time to teach my 7 year old daughter to become a good lil Revolutionary.
Cheers. It’s time for an adult beverage.

Blood spilling is not an acceptable avenue of change. If that’s what it takes, then our society has collapsed. Angry vindictiveness will not help. The founding fathers of the USA were not vindictive people. They resented domination by their colonial masters, but they were extremely thoughtful and principled.
Vindictiveness is purely destructive.
Regardlesss, our society has not collapsed. It has simply taken a wrong turn. If principled conservatism can present an honest and straightforward non-doctrinaire face to the general population, then Obama can be defeated in 2012, because by then some of the toxic chickens he has hatched in our financial system will be coming home to roost. There will be opportunity, but some sort of credible opposition has to exist to take advantage of it.
Look how Ron Paul’s messages resonates with many people. He has the air of a lunatic about him, and as a package he is not acceptable, but a fragment of that message is essential to take into the conservative agenda – the part about fiscal responsibility, the part about unnecessary entanglement of the US in the world’s problems, etc.
Blaming ACORN for the loss is silly. Sure they were a factor, but no more than the mobilization of born-again southern Christians was for George Bush’s election.
Bush’s weak domestic leadership during 8 years in power was the main problem. The republicans had dominated in the past 8 years, and did not make great use of their time in power.
Truth is that Obama should have won by a wider margin given how weak the Republicans were. It tells me that there is hope for 2012 if there is someone worthy to vote for. But the clock is ticking, and that someone has not emerged as yet.
Illegal immigration is without a doubt the single greatest threat to the viability of the US in the coming century. It’s not today’s issue, but it should be on the minds of politicians.
ET stated: “pathological narcissist” is that like a Jim Jones thing ?
ET, is pathological narcissist directly proportional to a mis-guided Self-Esteem ?
And, my apoligizes to Miss Lori, for being a conversational devil’s advocate.
Hmmmm,, didn’t Ron Paul believe the Gov’t flew the planes into the Twin Towers on 911 ?
“Blood spilling is not an acceptable avenue of change.”
Lori
Would that mean the US should be a British colony today?
“If principled conservatism can present an honest and straightforward non-doctrinaire face to the general population, then Obama can be defeated in 2012”
Lori
It is almost already too late as it is, let alone wait another 3~4 years.
The majority of the population is lazy, apathetic and disconnected.
The people who still care and have some fight left in them are getting older: Witness the TEA parties of last week. Not many tatooed kids text messaging present, was there?
The elites masterplan (The world’s big money on is frightfully concentrated amongst very few men now) plan to finish off America’s (The last major vessel of free entrepernership) by “buying” more time. If they can feed and shelter the population with probably throwing a bag of weed for good measure (I would not be surprized the WH followed by the rest of the free world will legalise pot soon thus it will become ultra cheap and abondant as any clown with a bag of dirt and some seeds can grow it) insuring even more lethargy with minimal adverse health consequences to the population.
Pot heads are content with very little and that includes not having a job. Unrest becomes that much unlikely.
Before someone comes back with the notion that the government will never legalise pot, they are partially right. They will never legalise it in order to control and tax it like tobacco and alcool. The main reason, I wrote just above. Unlike alcool which is costly for equipment to distill and dangerous to boot if not experienced; and also like tobacco which needs to be cured and processed to avoid burning one’s throat and lungs with harsness, marihuana can be grown, dried and ready for use by any joe who can grow tomatoes.
The government knows that they cannot tax pot in the %’s that they currently do with alcool and tobacco because again it’s too easy for anyone to grow themselves, effectively bypassing high prices. There’s no money there for government coffers and they would ultimately hurt their existing tax returns from booze and tobacco as these markets would also loose sales because of yet another available recreational drug.
If pot ever becomes legal it will be to sedate and help control unrest, not for tax returns.
