I’m just hearing about this now:
A proposal to give Internet service providers the power to shut down hate-mongering or pornographic websites received an enthusiastic response Monday by top telecommunications executives, said the plan’s creator.
Bernie Farber, chief executive of the Canadian Jewish Congress, presented the idea at the Canadian Telecom Summit in Toronto to senior managers from such major Internet providers as Rogers, Cogeco, and Sympatico, owned by BCE Inc. (…)
Members of police hate crime units were also receptive to Farber’s proposal, saying that universal guidelines would help curtail the electronic distribution of hateful or pornographic material. Det. Don McKinnon, a member of the hate crimes unit with the London, Ont. police force, said the technology needed to monitor on-line content already exists.
He said hate crime could be significantly reduced if ISP’s were permitted to use it as they saw fit.
This line near the bottom of the story caught my eye:
On June 8, an Edmonton man made history when he was convicted of promoting hatred of Jews on his website, making him the first Canadian to be successfully prosecuted for such a crime.
Look, I hate anti-semitism, but I’m no fan of our “hate crimes” laws, either. Why didn’t I read about this in the blogosphere on June 8?

This was about free speech not Indians … but since it’s now about Indians, I have a questions
At what point is our debt to the Indians paid off.
I mean to say we are buying this place not renting are we?
If we are renting then I want to talk to the landlord about some things that aren’t working very well.
John – I don’t think the peripheral discussion was about Indians and Canada and the Canadian gov’t – and I agree with you – there are real serious problems. I’d stop the reserve system, which doesn’t permit private enterprise on the reserves; stop the handouts; stop the corrupt chiefs; and the Dept of Indian Affairs is its own massive bureaucracy…on and on and on.
The discussion was strictly about ‘culture’ or mode of life. Namely, that of a non-industrial mode of life vs an industrial mode of life.
Beardy Cree was advocating a perspective that he felt was found primarily among native peoples and not among non-natives. I was stating that these perspectives are really ‘economic’ – and that the correct terms should be ‘non-industrial’ and ‘industrial’
And, that our population base was now too large to operate within a non-industrial perspective.
That really has nothing to do with Indian Affairs.
The Indians gave us tobacco. We gave them booze. I say we’re even.
Give every card-carrying Native in Canada a cheque for a million dollars. Upon cashing that cheque at the money mart, they would forfeit all claims past present and future against the Canadian government and her majesty, the Queen. All treaties would be null and void to them. The reservations would be razed. They would no longer be “Natives”, just Canadians.
Most Natives would take the deal and it would be cheaper than what we’re doing now. If they screw up their lives, they’d have no one to blame but themselves for once.
Well said, kathy.
And Beardy Cree, my cultural heritage, British, Christian–which built a democratic Canada and granted to your people many rights, rather than desecration (this is better than most conquered people received)–has now been almost completely erased from the public square in Canada. (Trudeau had LOTS to do with this cultural annihilation. Yes, Beardy, it’s really happened to my “tribe”: but–unlike the obeisance paid to your tribe in 2006–without the lingering respect or gigantic fiscal pay-offs. I sort of feel your pain.)
In modern day Canada, while the Francophones and First Nations of this country have all kinds of entitlements, via the BNA and multiculturalism, the descendents of those enlightened British Christian gentlemen, who granted many rights to the inhabitants of Canada, now have diminished entitlements. E.g., Quebec has Napoleonic Law, French language rights, and Catholic education (appreciated or not), while British Common Law and Protestantism have been completely eclipsed by the Charter and, with the arrival of immigrants of many faiths, the arid secularism of “the public school system”. But we, British Christians, who–unlike our Francophone or Native People confreres–are allowed none, or only scant, public respect or recognition, are compelled to pay for your entitlements over and over. Now isn’t that ironic? (To say the least.)
Beardy Cree: The FN people are welcomed at official publc celebrations all over Canada. Our public schools pay for all kinds of your cultural performances–drum and dance, etc. Dream catchers are made in public school classrooms. Now, when was the last time you heard of broad reference or respect given to any British or Christian observance–and I don’t mean Frosty or Rudolf–in the public schools of Canada? And remember that the Liberal government forbade Christian clergy to pray specifically Christian prayers at the services for the 1998 Swissair disaster, although other faith groups were not muzzled by such restrictions.
I think you need to broaden your horizons and realize that you’re not the only conquered group in this country. Culturally, my “tribe”–responsible for democracy in much of the Western world and, therefore many of your freedoms, sir–has lost a lot.
Thats what happens when you occupy aland you pay for it.
John Yes you are renting, and the person you should talk to is Harper He’s handling complaints, some have been waiting years for them to get to court. You see indians until the Trudeau years most couldn’t leave the rez unless some white guy let you. The reason was its a different country,
(2) TWO Countries signed the Treaties.
Most don’t go out enough to see that the waters are almost gone, How long before lake athabasca is dead, 5 years?
The non smokers are now learning that smoking wasn’t the main problem, 400% increase in childhood asthma.
If the ocean goes up ten feet who’s gonna go scuba diving to ground zero?
Moat on the gulf coast can’t get house insurence for water damage.
Your right about them not wanting people talking freely. A groups are now fighting for control. Bush wants to cut controls of media ownership.
One police force for the world, to protect us from the terrorists.
Lets see if we’ll still be able to blog here next year?
cyapase; Kate certainly did not get info about Marice Strong from reading MSM clap trap. David Hawkins ‘exposed’ Mo in his coverage of the “Oil for Food’ scam at Hawkins Cafe. I found that site on the internet – you can do that too if you would like to know something about Dippers/Liberanos and others of your ilk. Kate has posted some excellent coverage here. sda, on the Oil for Food scam and her many posters added links – very informative.
Please tell me where you read or heard about the Oil for Food scam or Mo Strong via Canadian MSM. Fox News has covered both in the U.S.A. but the thundering silence from Canadian MSM speaks volumes about the ties the MSM has to the Red Rat – the big, red, pulsating pimple of the Commie swarm – the pink nosed rat himself; Mo Strong and his mini rodent, the past PM of Canada; PMPM. The story is Huge, why would any real reporter not run with it?
Just try making fun of Jews or farmers. They are both sacred cows. But make fun of a Muslim, that’s ok. Do remember the Polack jokes and ethnic jokes of the 6o’s and 70’s?? They wern’t cool then and they’re not cool now. You remind me of school yard bullies that need a good kick in the groin!!!!
