For all the condemnation of French interior minister Nicolas “the rioters are scum” Sarkozy for “inciting” the rioters to further violence, it appears the majority of Fench agree with his assessment.

Faced with that evidence of public support for the very person blamed by the have-nots for exacerbating the tensions, the prime minister, Dominique de Villepin had no option but to adopt the Sarkozy approach (without the insults) and spend most of his time on television on Sunday evening telling the nation of his initiatives for tougher policing and greater powers to impose curfews, with only a passing, vague summary of what the government intended to do about the huge underlying social problems. Sarkozy’s 57% will make it ever more difficult for President Chirac and De Villepin to sideline him, as they would dearly wish to do. At the same time the poll result will be treated (unfairly) as the French white majority’s rejection of the complaints of the disadvantaged and the discriminated against. More sinisterly, such public reaction to the riots and rioters has brought smiles to the faces of the far right.

Aren’t the white french speaking citizens of france (those born there who can trace their family histories etc) the “first nations” of france?
So all of this handwringing about multiculturalism. “Europe” was about accomodation of multiple cultures, languages and religons, but each individual “tribal area” never has been. This is the fundamental contradiction within Europe.
The “invasion” and recreation of North America, the political creation is a new identity in which all are to give up past affiliations to a new political, not ethnic, religous ideal.
Is Europe seeing an aboriginal rebellion to the new immigrants? If the first nations had been on technical and wealth par with the Europeans would we have seen the same thing in North America?
Sadly, I believe we will see mass expulsions within the next decade. Either that or the countries of Europe creates an American (i.e. political) identity to replace their ethnic one and robust means to transmit that identity to new immigrants.
Canada needs to do worry about this as well.
Most of the terrorists that committed the July 7 attack on London were born and bred in England. Deportation is not a tool to use in their case. I guess they didn’t feel loved. This could spread all over Europe. Good thing the weather isn’t warmer.

Not advocating expulsion, lets be clear, but my bet is the “aboriginals” wont let a political thing like citizenship stand in the way.
This is not a good situation and the nations of Europe are not prepared for how to handle it. I hope it doesnt come to that but it Holland, France etc…if this continues you will see a movement, small m and big M Movement, to do this.
Not today, but if this is the beginning then we are entering a long dark tunnel.
Stephen. First of all, I am a Canadian and I support the US. That said, you failed to mention the problems the US is having with their immigrant issue. Don’t tell me that all of the people walking across your (if you are an American) southern border are assimilated. Ditto many who are entering through official programs. There are a hell of a lot of them that are not assimilated and won’t ever be, and they could be as big a problem for you in the future as are some of the immigrants in France today.
You mention that Canada needs to worry about this as well. I agree. It’s a world-wide problem. And that includes America.

The Americans are just better at it than everyone else, not perfect just better because they have been doing it for over 200 years.
Clearly large amounts of “illegal” as opposed to official and legal, immigration cause problems. While illegal immigrants remain outside of the schools etc it is a problem. However, American culture exerts a strong influence.
The process of becoming a citizen in the US embeds a stronger sense of being American than the process of becoming a British citizen or Canadian citizen. I will try to find Niall Fergusons article from last week that highlights this.
So yes illegal immigration is a problem, definitely agree. The people riotig in France arent illegal immigrants but LEGAL immigrants and more importantly their children.
My point was never the American are perfect more that the nations of Europe are so ill prepared for this that the reaction to this is more likely to ugly before it becomes effective. Once again, remeber the Dominique de Villpin, Jacques Chirac and Le Pen are the equivalents of Joseph Brant, Sitting Bull and Jeronimo’s of France…i.e. Aboriginal leaders….Europe is not North America and France is not the United States.
Stephen. Totally agree with what you say. I don’t really think that it matters if immigrants are legal or illegal. If they don’t want to assimilate they won’t. I’m sure there are many illegals in the US who are good citizens and want to be. But there are a lot who don’t want to be. And they will be a big problem for you in future years I predict.
We see this here in Vancouver every day. I can go to many areas of Vancouver where people don’t speak English. They don’t know how. They wear their head scarfs or burkas and they keep to themselves. But not all of them. There are many immigrants I know personally who are just as supportive of Canada and who love Canada as I do. One is Muslim and he’s my doctor. I trust my life with him when you think about it.
And Vancouver has a huge problem with immigrant gangs. Ditto Toronto and Winnipeg from what I hear. This problem doesn’t get the exposure it deserves. I know that many of these people are illegal immigrants (it’s easy in Canada) and are probably involved with terrorism of one sort or another (crime is a form of terrorism). If al Queda is looking for recruits, and I hear they are, this is lush territory for them.
I agree and have said so many times, that when someone immigrates to America they become ‘American’. Not so in Canada. Americans sing their anthem with pride. Not so with Canadians. This doesn’t apply to all Canadians of course. But Canada is a socialist state and it shows. Different mindset. But some areas of the US are similar. Look at NA and the problems they had dealing with the hurricane when the levees broke. I’m not saying these people aren’t good Americans and don’t love their country, but if they had been rugged individuals like farmers, ranchers or fishermen (for instance, there are many others of course) they could have and would have taken better care of themselves instead of sitting on their rooftops waiting for ‘someone else’ to come rescue them. I mean, when you’re behind a levee twelve feet below seal level, how much does it take to have an inflatable boat filled with survival stuff sitting under your bed? Sorry for the off-topic comment but it does sorta relate.
