If a modern Conservative can’r agree with a Libertarian then he is not a real conservative…however, again, it is unwise to allow media ( yes even net media) to define your politics for you. I lean to libertaraiansim in most state and civil matters but reatain elements of traditional conservative thought where society is concerned….but another “label” being plastered on the new emerging rationalism in politics ( both right and centrist) is useful only to it’s enemies ( the collective left). Thus the use of the “neo” as a stigmatyized prefix-label by the moonbat left. Everything “neo” has been deemed non “progressive: by the stagnant statist left because they themselves resist the new political change to embrace reason.
The modern conservative creed defies political compartmentalization. There is some liberatrianism in democratic reform, some objectivism in market/economics some elements of classic liberalism in property and individual rights, all tied into traditional conservative civil/social values and respect for constitutionally linear rule of law. It’s a misnomer to refer to this new swing to reason as “conservative” or “Neo-Con”.
I see libertaians falling into the same trap of political brand name labeling. By my observation, most centrists are libertarians and would make good Kennedy-era Democrats…not afraid of a fight,patriotic and comfortable with an armed and constitutionally empowered citizenry, concerned with individual liberty and constitutional rights, passionate for true social justice but aware of the degeneration of communism/radical socialism.
I think the marketing tag of “neo-libertarian” misses the mark as badly as “neo-Conservative” does.
In that line of thought…”liberal” and “progressive” is definately a misnomer for the political cult that sits under this banner. Kleptocrat, neo-soviet jurocrat or athiest-statist-socialist would be more acurate based on displayed behaviour.
Liberatarianism is too much open ended and loosey goosey depending on who is pretending to speak for it.
I suggest if you lean this way … IE to the right without the god thing in the way and without having to present a phony compassion quotient.
May I suggest Ayn Rand’s fabulous philosophy of Objectivism. It makes far more sense and is for smarter free thinkers. But then many of you already know that.
“Moderate libertarianism” is the future!
Conservatism has too much in common with socialism – fundamentally both acknowledge the elite’s right to control the people, whereas libertarians don’t.
The best term is perhaps simply ‘liberalism’ (in the ‘real’ sense). Btw, in Europe it’s typically called neo-liberalism.

I wonder how quick Canadian conservatives are going to be to argue that these critics must be anti-American for criticizing Emperor Chimpy. I’m not going to bother starting my stopwatch.

Three heads and nary a brain between them. Traffic low today?
No I just find it interesting that US conservatives are increasingly at odds with Bush’s conservativism and the fissure is immediately apparent in the Miers nomination. I’m not the only one making note of this: check out the links I posted or, if you are so worried about increasing my hit count, check out the National Review’s Corner for a sometimes strongly worded departing from the party line.
I also find it interesting that Americans criticizing Bush are either moonbats or trying to keep him in (conservative) line, but take any kind of shot at him north of the border and suddenly you are anti-American.
Just some simple observations of some interesting goings on in the blogosphere.

There’s been no shortage of criticism for George Bush on libertarian and conservative blogs in Canada. I’ve called him a statist countless times. Ask Jay Jardine what he thinks of Bush.
It’s one thing to criticize Bush’s policies. it’s entirely another to sneer at his “Americanness”, calling him a cowboy, a bible thumper and many other stereotypes associated in the popular imagination with the “Ugly American”. That’s anti-American bigotry, plain and simple, whatever the guise.
And calling him “Emperor Chimpy” is junior high political humour at its finest. Not so much anti-American as anti-adult. Then again, I have no idea how old you are.

What about when the Democrats, US liberals, US libertarian conservatives, US neo-con secularists, US non-partisan moderates do it? Don’t get me wrong: I truly love many many things about America but there are some stereotypes that ring true and speak to some fundamental core problems about that great nation. Pointing these things out is not anti-American bigotry no matter how much Bill O’Reilly whines about it.

OK, fair comment. I actually had two references to that and meant to delete them both. Wanted to make an emperor reference, which I think is accurate, but the chimpy reference was anti-adult. Beneath me. Especially as someone who despises Bush to no end but recognizes that he is a hell of a lot sharper than his opponents give him credit for.

I do, however, strongly dislike a ton of his policies: fiscal irresponsibility with the deficits and debt; poor timing of fiscal choices – never before has a country gone to war and implemented massive tax cuts; free trade hypocrisy with steel subsidies, rejecting NAFTA decisions out of hand, agricultural subsidies that outstrip ours; poor planning in the execution of the Iraq invasion and aftermath; politicizing science as never before (and I am not just talking about global warming); that’s in addition to my, as you would call it here, more “moonbatty” objections to him on such matters as selling his own country off to the highest bidding Republican supporting corporations, his anti-choice views, his doling out money to Christian-only charitable organizations (which is not a criticism of those charities, but of the further politicisation of church and state issues), his policy of only giving foreign AIDs assistance if the foreign country stops education programs that promote condoms and fully adopt his prescribed education programs, etc. etc. etc. I object to so many of his policies that it is sometimes difficult to separate opinions about him from opinions about his actions.
Cripes. Didn’t mean to get going OT on Bush on this post. But if those views colour my objectivity, then so be it. I like to put my cards on the table and then proceed to debate the issue openly.
