This Canada Free Press item has been landing in my mailbox all day. I’ve been out of the loop for much of the afternoon, so don’t know if Martin has been asked to respond to it or not. A small advisory though : Judy McLeod sometimes comes up with some off the wall stuff. But still – where you see Maurice Strong involved….
Cordex Petroleum Inc., launched with Saddam’s million by Prime Minister Paul Martin’s mentor Maurice Strong’s son Fred Strong, is listed among Martin’s assets to the Federal Ethics committee on November 4, 2003.
Among Martin’s Public Declaration of Declarable Assets are: “The Canada Steamship Lines Group Inc. (Montreal, Canada) 100 percent owned”; “Canada Steamship Lines Inc. (Montreal, Canada) 100 percent owned” – Cordex Petroleums Inc. (Alberta, Canada) 4.6 percent owned by the CSL Group Inc.”
Yesterday, Strong admitted that Tongsun Park, the Korean man accused by U.S. federal authorities of illegally acting as an Iraqi agent, invested in Cordex, the company he owned with his son, in 1997.
(Don’t forget Friends of Saddam for updates on Oil-For-Food.)

As Coyne says, it may sound tinfoil-hattish, but nothing should surprise us these days.

Then consider:
– that Chretien’s son-in-law was the director of Power Corp, the company that controlled TotalFinaElf (now Total), which held enormously lucrative contracts with Saddam to develop Iraq’s oil fields, and that these contracts would collapse if Saddam were ousted;
– that “Power Corp. had extensive connections to BNP Paribas, a French bank that had been handpicked by the UN in 1996 to broker the Oil-for-Food program. In fact, Power actually once owned a stake in Paribas through its subsidiary, Pargesa Holding SA. The bank also purchased a stake in Power Corp. in the mid-seventies and, as recently as 2003, BNP Paribas had a 14.7 per cent equity and 21.3 per cent voting stake in Pargesa, company records show.” (CanadaFreePress)
– that senior people at BNP Paribas were close friends not only of Crouton and his family, but also of Jack Chirac, who also opposed the war. No Saddam, no more Oil-for-Food programme, therefore no more fat commissions or interest.
Finally, ask yourself this question: why did the Government of Canada not only decide at the last minute not to participate in or support Operation Iraqi Freedom, but actually engaged in a drawn-out, hopeless diplomatic initiative to secure another UN Security Council Resolution more explicit on the use of force than the best that Powell could achieve, further delaying the beginning of the conflict?
In other words, how principled was Canada’s decision “not to get involved” – because make no mistake, we WERE involved, courtesy Crouton, Martin and their lifelong friends and business associates.
Another “role of pride and influence in the world” for Canadians to glory in.

Globe & Mail links Strong and Park to Cordex, but not a word about Martin:
“U.S. prosecutors allege that in 1997, as the UN launched the oil-for-food program, Mr. Park invested $1-million (U.S.) in a Canadian energy company linked to a top UN official — money that he received from Iraqi authorities. Canadian entrepreneur and special UN envoy Maurice Strong has since acknowledged that Mr. Park was an investor in Cordex Petroleums Inc., a Calgary firm in which he and his son Frederick were major investors. Cordex went bankrupt in 1999.”

Alas, Maurice Strong has pneumonia and has retired to the Dominican Republic to recuperate:
“Maurice Strong was a special adviser to Mr. Annan in 1997, the year Mr. Park made an investment in a company the Canadian tycoon was associated with. Mr. Strong worked as special envoy for U.N. reform in an office located directly across the corridor from the secretary-general on the 38th floor of the U.N. building.
Yesterday, Mr. Strong, who is said to be in the Dominican Republic recuperating from a bout with pneumonia, issued a statement in which he admitted to having had a relationship with Mr. Park since at least 1997. The relationship was formed even though Mr. Park had been found several years earlier to be at the center of a 1970s influence peddling scandal in Washington, known as Koreagate.
The statement by Mr. Strong, who is Mr. Annan’s special envoy to the Korean Peninsula, followed the unsealing of a criminal complaint against the North Korean-born Mr. Park last Thursday in Manhattan by U.S. Attorney David Kelley. In the complaint, Mr. Park was accused of targeting two unnamed U.N. officials for bribery.
Mr. Park is also alleged to have told the Iraqis that in 1997 or 1998 he had invested $1 million of Iraqi money in a Canadian company that was set up by the son of one of those officials. The Canadian company later collapsed. The Saddam Hussein regime hoped the bribe money would sway U.N. officials who were in position to influence the sanction regime against Iraq and the formation of the oil-forfood program.”

Can’t get much more MSM than the Times of Londons.
“New questions emerged yesterday about a possible conflict of interest for the inquirys head, Paul Volcker, the former chairman of the US Federal Reserve.
Mr Volcker has served as a paid adviser to Power Corporation of Canada, a holding company whose Belgian partner, Groupe Bruxelles Lambert, is said to be the largest single shareholder in Total SA, the oil giant that traded in Iraqi crude under the Oil-for-Food programme.
The UN had dismissed the connection as irrelevant but new information emerged yesterday linking Power Corporation to the inquiry. Maurice Strong, the Canadian tycoon who used to be its president, admitted this week that a company with which he was associated had received an investment from a North Korean-born businessman who has been charged in America for acting as an unregistered foreign agent for Saddam Husseins Iraq.
Mr Strong, who stepped aside on Wednesday as the UN envoy to North Korea, identified the company as Cordex Petroleums, an oil firm whose owners include Paul Martin, the Canadian Prime Minister and Mr Strongs close friend.”

Son of a B$tch…. then the west gets ragged on for wanting out and not wanting to be a part of this bloody embarrassment. This is totally frustrating, and pretty soon there not going to allow us, if not already, to even make visits in the US.
Don’t sweat it Rob. You’ll be a citizen before too long. Skip right over the green card.
There was a discussion at the shotgun about Quebec, and what will happen now. It’s probably a lose-lose situation, meaning, if the conservatives get in, Quebec will want out due to tghe increase strength of the PQ, and if the Libs get back in then both Quebec and AB are gonna want out.
It’s almost easier to pursue it now rather then give Harper a chance, but I guess one more attempt won’t hurt if he gets in. Besides, I just give him a 100 bucks.
But ya know Quebec is bond to stir up shit either way….
Well there’s a new conspiracy theory for ya – that the whole passports thing didn’t originate with Homeland Security but it came from north of the border. The Cdn govt is starting small, instead of jumping right into big ugly concrete walls, barbed wire and landmines to keep people in. That stuff can come later.
Big nostaligia trip there Jay. They’re suckin’ on stubbies!
For those interested in the correction pronunciation of Cordex in French, have a look.

Strongs an admitted communist, and has close ties to PM Dithers. What the hell else does it take to ship these guys up to the Alert Bay open air compound.

Coming into all of this at the end of what appears to be a “NOT slow news day” I can only add that today’s understatement of the year goes to Bono, who’s pissed because Paulie didn’t live up to his commitment of 0.7% of GDP for aid…
“…”It’s a time for real leadership. I understand there’s problems at home. I understand it’s hard to get time to focus on this.”…”

Yikes, we really ARE in a Ludlum novel!
Back in the late 90’s, 2000 or so, CBC Newsworld aired a documentary on their “Witness” program about Saddam Hussein. The filmaker, a young french guy (I think), was in Iraq on the pretense that he wanted to show the world how the sanctions were hurting Iraq. He ended up filming Saddam’s palaces, and palaces under construction, and he made a prety good point about how no money was going to hospitals, the needy, etc. He ended up barely getting out of Iraq, as his minders started getting wind of what he was really up to.
Since the USA started making noise about Iraq in 2002, this film seems to have dropped off CBC programming.
Does anybody know what this film was called? or where I can find it?
I haven’t been able to find any references to it on google or the CBC site.
It had a really good segment in it on how Saddam appealed to his people at the end of the Iran-Iraq war for the need to donate their jewellary for the soldiers. A year later he showed up in a solid gold, jewell encrusted, horse drawn carriage.
This is a film that needs to be shown NOW, in light of all that is being unearthed.
Martin & Saddam?
It is going to be interesting to see what comes of this one….
We have desrtroyed all records of this program that never aired on our airwaves, because if it did exist (which it didn’t) it would be a big Bush lie and prove us to be the totalitarian socialists we are.
Please send any further emails in regards to this program to fakeguvmentemployee@liberalsheep.ca
