The VW Bug and other similar models with a rear mounted air cooled engine were not practical for Canadian winters. In the 60’s, they introduced optional gasoline fired cabin heaters that consumed almost as much gas as the engine. In Sub Zero weather, they (4 cyl air cooled engines) were difficult to start.
In any climate where the low was zero C and the high was in the upper 90’s or more, they were ideal. Horsepower was however limited.
The workmanship on the engine and body were superb. If anything, they were fun to drive.
The only VWs I’ve ever owned were a 1977 Rabbit and a 1991 Golf, the latter which I still have.
Both make use of the waste heat from the engine to keep the interior warm. I remember that the temperature inside my Rabbit became high enough that, while I was driving in -40 C weather, I could be in my shirtsleeves.
Rabbit and Golf were the same car. They were liquid cooled like almost every other car. The problem with Bugs was moving sufficient heat from a tiny air cooled engine in the back to the front of the cabin. If my memory serves correctly they totally failed.
The Rabbit was the North American name for the Golf when it was introduced in the mid-1970s.
While I was growing up in northern B. C., we had rellies in the Edmonton area. One Christmas, they drove up in their VW Beetle. On the way back, the car became so cold that someone’s aftershave lotion froze.
The workmanship on the engine and body were superb. If anything, they were fun to drive.
I’m sure that many car customizers would agree. I remember someone in my high school who drove a modified Beetle. It had been modified so that it had no trunk in front and the back end was shortened. It looked vaguely like the Swatch cars one sees on the road today.
I am fully aware of the news of the late 1950s and 1960s. I don’t recall anyone being concerned or mentioning that the car was a Nazi car. It was just a fcuking car. Cars don’t join political parties. I certainly knew Hitler loved it but it was a fcuking car – and cars don’t join political parties.
You do realize that I have linked a bit of light hearted comedy not a serious political commentary, right?
Do you realize I never clicked on your link?
The historians went on and on about a Nazi car which was oddly stupid to me.
If you did not click on the link then you missed the context, it was a joke.
Also, cars do not join political parties but when widely used by the country’s military (you are familiar with Kübelwagen, right?) then it is perfectly ok to refer to them in a way that connects them their users.

This above piece was featured on CTV News tonight. The distress hand signal was invented in April 2020 during the outbreak of Covid-19 by a Canadian to be used in the event that a person is seeking help because of possible domestic violence due to the Covid 19 pandemic isolation regulations. It has now been adopted around the Globe as the official hand signal for distress when a person can’t talk.
Recently, a man, James Herbert Brick, was charged with unlawful imprisonment when the girl he kidnapped who learned the cry for help hand signal online (TikTok) used the signal while they were driving on Highway I -75 in Kentucky. A man driving in a nearby car spotted her and recognized the signal for what it was, proceeded to follow the car where the girl was in distress, phoned police and saved the girl. The North Carolina girl had been reported missing two days prior by her parents.
Part two to this story, is that there is now a handbook being developed as a Responder’s Guide, a “how to” instruction booklet for people who spot a person in distress and what to do in that case.
I believe this is an excellent idea and I’m surprised it hadn’t been previously invented. Hopefully it will be incorporated in Driver’s Ed courses.
I used to own a drive air-cooled VW’s a lot in my youth. Still own a few. They do have heaters/defrosters that channel air from the cooling fan over heat exchangers built onto the header pipes, and then into ducts in the body. When all that is in perfect nick, they put out reasonable heat, once the engine is warmed up. But too many drivers never really learned to use it properly, and fewer still maintained it. The gas heaters, when they worked, put out a lot of heat , and very quickly, at that. Idea being, you ran the gas heater for five or ten minutes, get the cabin well warmed up, by which time the engine-based heater could keep it warm.
The VW-supplied gas heaters used a platinum glow plug for ignition, and lead in the fuel “poisoned” the catalyst, and eventually, the heater would not light. By the time unleaded gas was the norm, those gas heaters were no longer used.
The old Beetles did perform very well in snow.
Earlier today, I watched The Magic Sword, which we briefly discussed the other day:
I wasn’t sure if it meant to be campy or was simply poorly written. The lead actors (Basil Rathbone and Estelle Winwood) looked as if their performances were meant to be tongue in cheek.
Gary Lockwood was, in my opinion, miscast as the dashing hero. I’ve long considered his acting style to be wooden, but he was an excellent choice to play Frank Poole in 2001: A Space Odyssey as it fir well with the setting and story.
Two hokey science fiction movies this time, both of which I first watched as late-night movies.
It was made shortly after the USS Nautilis crossed underneath the North Pole and likely was produced to capitilize on the resulting publicity. The sub’s commander was played by Dick Foran, who, earlier in his movie career, was a singing cowboy.
By the time he made this film, Dana Andrews’ film career was on the skids. It had been revealed that he had become an alcoholic and he was getting secondary roles, often in lower-budget movies. He continued working in Hollywood into the early 1980s, but he never matched what he did in movies such as Laura and The Best Years of Our Lives.
Loved the movie “Laura”. Didn’t know about Mr. Andrews’s declining career.
He also played Ted Stryker in ‘Zero Hour’, which in turned was the inspiration for ‘Airplane!’.
That role, when the original story Flight Into Danger was televised on CBC, was played by James Doohan.
While I was still in high school nearly 50 years ago, I heard the public service ads that he made about his alcoholism when they played on a certain American shortwave station.

DanBC,
Thanks for the link. Have shared to all I know. If those headlines don’t make one question “safety” of the jabs, well there is NO hope.
FYI, yesterday I sent my doctored corrections in electronic version of the URGENT HEATLH MESSAGE (which arrived via Canada Post last week) back to health minister Copping, along with a lengthy email. The final paragraph:
If AHS and the government of Alberta wish to gaslight honest taxpayers, it would be courteous not to use our own money to do so. These pharmaceutical companies are flush with cash. Next time you want to put together a brochure for their financial benefit, please appeal to them before plundering our provincial coffers.
Re Beetles and outback Oz
We have some of the best dust in the world. As attested by the local shire workshop boss’s report on a Cat rep collecting the cleanings of a dry air filter with the comment “We can’t grind it that fine”.
Same bloke on Beetles – “All right I suppose if you look after the air cleaner – about every 10 minutes”. If you did – they had a welder that used a VW industrial that went for years.

Yup. That’s ain’t the worst that could happen. People really don’t seem to understand, so sometimes corporal punishment is required.

These ‘people’ may be able to bully certain musicians who still own their own music into canceling some of their songs when in concert or getting the . gov media to do likewise on radio, TV or the web but many artists have already sold their music. Likely more will do so in the future. Who could blame them? It’s big business right now.
Things will be preserved but with Agenda 2130, fast approaching, there’ll be less people on the Planet to listen to music. People who own vinyl, CDs or casettes will be the winners, that is, if their equipment still works.
P.S. I’m not worried, there aren’t that many offensive songs out there to cancel, these people are just looking for attention, that is, unless they find love ♡ songs offensive. Perhaps rap ‘music’ will take a hit— but, I wouldn’t know. At least the ‘wordless’ and treasured Classical music industry will survive. That is a good thing, it’s far more superior!

According to the video ‘They can also move tanks.’
Another fallacy that many have fallen for.
Let’s take a look at what WikiPravda [1] has conceeded.
‘the autobahns could not be used by tanks as their weight and caterpillar tracks damaged the road surface … most military and economic freight was carried by rail’ [2]
1. WikiPravda peddles victor’s history
2. they forgot to mention horses
Tanks are always moved by rail or flatbeds even now. They’re too slow, too unreliable and do too much damage to roads to drive around from place to place.
No word on whether Biden the wind breaker took ownership and apologized for loudly farting in the presence of royalty.
Not to defend the old man, but did the old lady HAVE to be such a blabber mouth about this? For this naughty bit of gossip to have been spilled, laughed at and mocked says a lot more about ‘her’ than anybody else. Pity.
P.S. Is she a GREENIE worried about flatulence?
Ah yes, that must be it!
Consider who her husband is. Charles doesn’t exactly come across as a candidate for Mensa membership.
Money does not buy class.

We certainly see that with Prinz Dummkopf, don’t we? He’s definitely lacking on both counts.
Yes, and more…saw him talking to the Caucus when I was briefly channel surfing— so freaking full of himself…I switched the channel.
Major Rebellion In Melbourne Australia underway, a big push to get rid of the NAZI DAN ANDREWS. Massive crowds taken over the whole city, Cops/Gestapo/COP PIGS no where to be seen. The people finally figured out they have the power. That we out number the Government NAZI’s. We need the same here against the NAZI FORCED ILLEGAL INJECTIONS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFtUwp2jicM
That must happen everywhere. Full on mass civil disobedience.
I bet cops were there in civilian clothing and on side.
Wow! Bravo Australians!
Let the killing of innocent people stop.
May the murderers be prosecuted.
Watcher, time for stupid Canadians to stand up and kick the governments ass.
Nah. If they did that, where would they get their free stuff from?

“Last Wednesday, Toronto Police shot and killed a 70-year-old man.
He was shot once in the neck and three times in the chest. You likely

Watcher, that really didn’t happen as the CBC didn’t report it. That will be the Canadian opinion of that item from VoxDay. I read him daily . We have lost our minds.
Situations like this must give Prinz Dummkopf an erection:
“The footage showed Rosenbaum following Rittenhouse before Rittenhouse suddenly spins around and fires his rifle at him. Rosenbaum falls, and Rittenhouse runs around a car.”
“It was the clearest video yet of the fatal shooting in August 2020 that set in motion the bloodshed that followed moments later: Rittenhouse, then 17, killed Anthony Huber, a 26-year-old protester seen on bystander video hitting Rittenhouse with a skateboard. Rittenhouse then wounded Gaige Grosskreutz, a protester and volunteer medic.”

Ah yes, that must be it!
Consider who her husband is. Charles doesn’t exactly come across as a candidate for Mensa membership.
Money does not buy class.
Nor brains…

Dear conservatism: please just die already. You were always useless and only getting more so. All conservatives do is take the left’s hand-me-downs. Want to know what a conservative will believe in 20 years? Ask a liberal what they believe today.
Biden breaks an ill wind. Numpty wakes up again. Coincidence?
Tuvalu has a booth at COP26, claiming that the small island in the Pacific is disappearing beneath the seas.

COVID-19 in Ontario: January 15, 2020 to November 8, 2021

Number of deaths* 2 3 +50.0% 9,903
Number resolved 238 456 +91.6% 590,227
** This number only includes deaths that have occurred in the last month.
823 people die from all causes every day in Canada based on stats cans annual numbers. The damn whu who flu did not add to this as the deaths were fraudulently recorded as “covid” which they weren’t.. Liars, every freaking one that pushes this deadly vax and the not so deadly flu.
The Montreal mayoral election was apparently real amusing. The left-leaning selectee of the previous mayor gave a victory speech before losing to some neophyte.

Despite being no 2 in the previous admin,”in one televised leader’s debate, Savard failed a spot quiz on municipal issues, managing only four right answers out of 10. The question she really flunked was the size of Quebec City’s municipal debt. She estimated the debt was $550 million when in fact it is $1.5 billion.”
UnMe: You got the city wrong. It was Quebec City not Montreal.

I assume no employer would agree to those terms – and that’s the point.
