On Friday my phone was blowing up with messages, asking if I’d seen the news. Some expressed disbelief at the headlines. Many said they were crying.
None of them were talking about the dozens of people gunned down in Sousse, Tunisia, by a man who, dressed as a tourist, had hidden his Kalashnikov inside a beach umbrella. Not one was crying over the beheading in a terrorist attack at a chemical factory near Lyon, France. The victim’s head was found on a pike near the factory, his body covered with Arabic inscriptions. And no Facebook friends mentioned the first suicide bombing in Kuwait in more than two decades, in which 27 people were murdered in one of the oldest Shiite mosques in the country.
They were talking about the only news that mattered: gay marriage.
Unlike President Obama, I have always been a staunch supporter of gay marriage, and I cheered the Supreme Court’s ruling making gay marriage legal in all 50 states. But as happy as I was, I was equally upset on Friday–and not just with the Islamists who carried out those savage attacks.
Moral relativism has become its own, perverse form of nativism among those who stake their identity on being universalist and progressive.
How else to explain the lack of outrage for the innocents murdered on the beach, while vitriol is heaped on those who express any shred of doubt about the Supreme Court ruling? How else to make sense of the legions of social-justice activists here at home who have nothing to say about countries where justice means flogging, beheading or stoning?
How else to understand those who have dedicated their lives to creating safe spaces for transgender people, yet issue no news releases about gender apartheid in an entire region of the world? How else to justify that at the gay-pride celebrations this weekend in Manhattan there is unlikely to be much mention of the gay men recently thrown off buildings in Syria and Iraq, their still-warm bodies desecrated by mobs?
It is increasingly eerie to live in this split-screen age. Earlier this week I received an email from a progressive Jewish organization about how Judaism teaches “that the preservation of human dignity is important enough to justify overriding our sacred mitzvot.” The rest of the email was about respecting dignity by using preferred gender pronouns.
On my other computer screen, I looked at a photograph of five men in orange jumpsuits, their legs bound. They were trapped like dogs inside a metal cage and hanging above a pool of water. They were drawing their final breaths before their Islamic State captors lowered the cage into the pool and they drowned together.
What was that about human dignity?
The barbarians are at our gates. But inside our offices, schools, churches, synagogues and homes, we are posting photos of rainbows on Twitter. It’s easier to Photoshop images of Justice Scalia as Voldemort than it is to stare evil in the face.

The Supreme Court chose to create BS law out of nothing when they really did have the authority under the Constitution looking at another angle. The had it within their power to use Article IV, Section 1 the “Full Faith and Credit Clause” requiring all states to recognize each other’s marriages, divorces, etc. Instead they pulled made up law out of their asses, nothing that Washington and Jefferson could have contemplated. More legislation by the judiciary.
Hopefully this means the lamestream media will finally stop its constant promotion of stories featuring LBGTQ-ness as important “news”.

It is a nebulous construct to equate this as being a green light for legal sodomy (that was what active homo sexuality was referred to in the code law at the time of writing the constitution)
The citation you quote from the constitution was a direct reference to the fact that the rule of law would prevail to prevent factions from arming up to settle personal and group differences – that redress had 4 constitutional safety valves –
1)they had the soap box (1st amendment free speech) to voice concerns and persuade public opinion to democratic change, –
2) the ballot box (14th amendment) – Free franchise to run for office or elect officers who will give redress –
3) the jury box (6&7th amendment) – opportunity for redress in the code and common courts.
4) Lastly, the ammo box (2nd amendment) is there as a last resort for factional regress of an ongoing injustice perpetrated by those running government who ignore vox populi, the courts and appeals from congress. Unresponsive governments not representing the will of the majority were to be ousted by force of arms by the majority if they ignored democratic mandate to leave.
The civil war was such an armed redress of factional grievance after the other 3 safety valves for “domestic tranquility” failed – but I don’t recall a similar chain of events over the rights to decriminalize sodomy.
The reference to rule of law and domestic harmony was the American version of “and the people will find their refuge from tyranny in the law”. Rule of law not rule of tyrants, “common law by and for the commoner shall rule the land, not the decree of the king.”
THIS is what was intended by that segue you cite in the preamble – it is a clear (at least according to the federalist papers and the writing of the founders)reference to the rule of law and the 4 safety valves (civil rights) of the democratic commonwealth republic they were scripting.
There is no direct reference to sexual preference “rights” in the constitution or DoI -if there was it was indirect through the references to the rule of common law – and the founders believed fully in the letter of the law – it mean what it says and nothing more – you need it to mean something else? – there is a democratic system to do that. At the time the first articles were written, homosexual marital relationships were a codified crime called sodomy – these laws have been since removed and changed to reflect the wishes of those now running the rule of law. SS marriage is no longer a code crime ( as is proper) – any other equity of common right needed for SS couples reverts to a state level for codification.
To say the fathers specifically protected SS marriage constitutionally is ludicrous in the extreme. They wrote law which meant what it said because unclear law could not be lawfully enforced – there were no “interpretations” needed in republican commonwealth code – the letter of the law was the only realm of the court. Law was changed by the representitves to reflect majority will. THAT is constitutional construct and all the Fabian activists on the bench reinterpreting, reading in and changing law are in abatement of constitutional rule of law.

It is a while since I read the U.S. Constitution but as well as I remember it doesn’t forbid homosexual marriage. I think it doesn’t mention it at all.
I agree with Mark Steyn’s descriptions of the decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court as having escaped the bounds of their constitutional role. I dislike the idea of homosexual marriage, (I am unsure whether it is more a symptom of the decay of our society than it will be a cause of further decay,) but freedom must include the freedom to make mistakes so if a democracy will recognize homosexual marriage those of us who dislike the idea must put up with that unless and until the majority of the electorate change their minds. But I think it is a mistake for the supreme court of a federal government to take this decision out of the hands of the democratically elected governments of the member states.
This is one of those articles that make me laugh these days. The author seems shocked that all his Leftie acquaintances and the news media and every random son of a bench he runs into is all over the gay marriage thing…

Let’s be clear here. The US Constitution does not specifically mention marriage and it is therefore a matter for the plenary sovereignty of the states. There’s no doubt at all that any state could define marriage on any terms or abolish it completely. There’s also no doubt that married status conferred by one state would have to recognized by all the other states, in accordance with the rules by which out-of-state rights are accommodated with state laws generally.
The majority of the Supreme Court completely rejects this. They hold that the requirement for equal justice under law means that any legal status that any person can claim because of his circumstances must be conferred as a matter of right to all persons, regardless of circumstances. This is manifestly insane. But the consequence is that the states have no authority whatsoever over marriage and are compelled to issue and honour fraudulent marriage licenses regardless of facts or law, simply because it amuses the court to pretend that the Constitution says so when it obviously doesn’t.
And you think this is something to celebrate? Hell, I’ll come over to your house and poison your dog, and you can rejoice. You’ve got a hell of a strange idea of what’s a good time.

Sooo! I will bring forward the open nerve I have not been able to explain why it bothers;
Sometime ago my Wife and I visited a Cousin who is a contemporary of ours. This people we visited were the Cousin-Female-; Her Husband-Male- and their Son-Gay-. I am not particularly comfortable around Gay people. Something I believe started when i was a pre-pubescent kid living in a neighbourhood where an unthreatening homo-sexual man conducted piano lessons.
The watchword was “do not let your family come into contact with that household”. This was the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. Naturally I was admonished frequently with “stay away from the xxxxxxx house” and hearing whispered comments about “I saw him resting his hed on the shoulder of one of his students at the door”.
Moving roughly six decades later to return to the visit with Cousin; her Spouse; and openly Gay Son. During a restaurant dinner out and a conversation about Quebec’s relationship with the Rest of Canada the Gay Sn remonstrated his father for becoming upset with my use of the phrase “Franco-Phile”. The Father misheard my comment and became upset for using something he heard as “Homo-Phobe”. The Father may have detected something in my manner as being uncomfortable or the Father was always in a heighten state of protectiveness for his Son.
Now advancing a few years later and attending the Memorial Service for the demise of the same Father. He died from brain cancer and suffered greatly. Our oldest Son also attended the Memorial service with his common-law Wife-Female-.
Some day’s later I received a phone call from the Cousin’s Gay Son for the first time. The reason for the phone call was an inquiry like question; “your Son called me about New York City regarding hotel accommodations”. My reaction was along the line of that’s interesting, how’s your Mother doing? He quickly said fine or some such and hung up.
Now another couple of years pass and sitting in a Canadian residence with Canadian in Laws similarly related to the Cousin and Gay Son as my Wife. The subject of claiming a taxable expense item came up and the Sister-in-Law to my wife and I asked the Mother and Gay Son how to approach the matter. I spoke out and said you would really be better asking a Canaidian for advise on Tax matters than an American.
This was probably only the third or fourth time of meeting these relatives, the Cousin and her openally Gay Son. His response appearing hostile for some reason and ignoring the eight or nine people sitting around the room said to his Mother and i paraphrase; “I remember meeting a Canadian before and he was probably Gay, but cannot come out of the closet until his Father dies, because his Father is Gay and won’t admit it.
The response flabbergasted everyone and like a sudden sound of flatulence in decorous room, everyone ignored it. The evening quietly moved on, no discussions of tax planning; no mentioning of the pseudo-flatulence again. We left when everyone else left and that was the evening. Two
years at another extended family gathering the Cousin/Mother dramatically avoided me at every opportunity. Even less comfortable around Gays.
