Sun- Manitoba foster group echoes Peguis chief’s concerns over child welfare oversight
Last week, Chief Bird called for the cancellation and restructuring of Peguis’ child and family services agreement, stating that the system created under the 2023 coordination deal has “no accountability and no transparency.”
The agreement, established under Bill C-92, was the first in Manitoba to transfer child welfare authority from the province and the federal government to a First Nation. The 2019 federal legislation was designed to affirm Indigenous jurisdiction over child and family services and promote culturally grounded, community-led care.
“No one is disputing the importance of Indigenous leadership over child welfare,”
So why do they need this setup then?
First Nations want self government, so why do they need government accountability?
The chief and elders can take care of accountability.
it would certainly be a lesson for other indigenous groups and also the rest of the world to see if we get reports of child abuse when its their own in charge eh??
If you can’t supply your people with clean water, what makes you think you can run a child welfare agency?
That didnt take long. Not even 2 years in and this is the 2nd policy of the NDP to already fail spectacularly. Last week it was the homecare restructuring. The MB Leg is seriously run by woke children. But we do have free contraceptives and gender change meds. So there’s that!
Of course they want full control over the child welfare system. We’re talking big bucks here. Corruption runs deep in every band council. Chief needs a new F150. Or Escalade.
All this is their way of saying they need more money.
Chief Bird? I hope he doesn’t send me his bill, nyucknyuck. Seriously though, it looks as if he’s genuinely concerned about the scamming. Until corrected by events I think we should see him as one of the good guys.
That there is scamming, I fear we must presume in the circumstances.
