We Don’t Need No Flaming Sparky Cars

“… a $43.6 billion extravaganza of corporate welfare and environmental virtue signaling”

The federal and Quebec governments have pledged up to $4.6 billion in production subsidies for Northvolt. This decision, made with the kind of cavalier attitude toward public funds that’s become a hallmark of Trudeau’s governance, assumes a best-case scenario break-even timeline of 9 years. However, the PBO, injecting a dose of reality, estimates an 11-year break-even timeline based on Northvolt’s projected production schedule. That’s over a decade of waiting and hoping for a return on investment.

But wait, there’s more. Volkswagen is receiving a $13.2 billion production subsidy, with a projected 15-year break-even timeline. Stellantis-LGES tops the charts with a $15.0 billion subsidy and a jaw-dropping 23-year break-even timeline. These aren’t just optimistic projections; they’re a leap of faith with taxpayer money.

Volkswagen’s move to scale back EV production due to slowing demand is a clear signal that the EV market isn’t as robust as some would have us believe. This isn’t just a temporary glitch; it’s a symptom of a larger issue within the industry. For a leading automaker to take such a step indicates a significant mismatch between the hype around EVs and the actual market demand.

  1. There is no “market demand” for EVs. This is a construct by the green nut jobs, low IQ politicians and conmen who know a con when they see one.

    1. DW,

Electric Golf Carts are definitely a thing in the Florida and Arizona Retirement Communities.

      That’s a market with a growing demand.

      1. The golf course I play at has a fleet of electric carts, they are leased and the lease is rolled over every few years and new ones arrive. They will be great for our 15 minute cities in places where there is no snow or extreme cold during the winter.

    2. But they’re picking (funding) winners and losers! Sadly, our governments have selected the LOSERS to temporarily win.

Who killed the internal combustion engine? Leftist governments killed it

  2. Lets be honest here, like every other liberal boondoggle, there will never be a payoff for these corporate handouts, especially not at 5%+ interest that the government will not mention…

    1. In high skool, the head of my dick was more conservative than Blubber is today.
And Doug has the IQ of a chunk of shit.

  3. Industrial scale vote buying masquerading as fiscal scorched earth mal-investment. The Spawn-Fuhrer knows he’s finished and is furiously leaving a deeply indebted dumpster fire for his successors.

  4. Any business that relies on government subsidies for its existence will go bankrupt, sooner rather than later. Once the owners extract all the available cash out of it, the business is going tits up. That is a fact not an opinion. Transfer pricing and management fees should take care of things.

  5. Next up in the Carbon Neutral Renewable Resource Powered Vehicle Bonanza?

As Electric Vehicle Technology plateaus, we need to invest billions in Bio-Refuse Powered External Combustion Watt Cycle Engines. Yes! That’s right! From out of the past, we must grasp the other automotive technology not chosen from the last Century.

We must go back to our original roots and perfect wood fired Steam Cars! They will be the Biofueled Renewable Energy wave of the future!

Imagine A Car Powered by Water!

    Toot! Toot!

  6. As regular as night after day, whatever the bloody politicians touch turns into garbage and expansive at that.

“Real cost of EV battery plant subsidies $5 billion higher than government estimates: PBO”

A billion here and a billion there and suddenly we’re talking real money.

This is after the idiots in Ottawa took over the pipeline and poured billions more into it than anybody could possibly afford in the free enterprise.
They don’t give a damnest damn about spending billions, they just extort it from the plebeians and give it to the assorted favored companies.
    A classic fascism.

  7. I like the article about the Tesla backing into the water while launching a jet ski. It locked the doors, went into the water with a woman inside (her husband rescued her) the damn car caught fire and was burning underwater. Now tell what idiot would buy a vehicle like that. They should all be pulled off the road. These expensive toys are worse than the old Ford Pinto.
I don’t do links, go to Blazingcatfur.

    1. YEP, YEP n Yep

Virtue signalling garbage – since day 1.
      Cant tow squat
      Shit range
48+ hrs to charge on 110 VAC
      Spontaneous combustion

& NO ONE in their right mind would even consider buying a “used” one.

There is also the question of Electrical Generation as in, wheres it supposed to come from..Hmmm.???

HYDRO..? Seems to me EVERY major river on the planet is already Dammed.

Wind/Solar..? laughable to best…Not ever gonna do it.

      Fossil Fuels: NEIN.!! Ist Verbotten.!!

      Which Leaves Nuclear.

An option that has potential (in about 30 yrs from now by the time they actually start building some). & Then there’s is the issue of GRETA & the Global Insanity (Green), Brigade actually jumping on board with Nukes…???

      AS if.

      1. Just like the Pope with contraception, The Planet Savers are not opposed to electricity generation, just electricity generation that works. They also hate Hydro and Nucular.

  8. The EV thingy is not going to last. It’s a stupid way travel whereby you are slave to a a god damned battery.

There is nothing about EVs that are less polluting than ICE vehicles.

Watch the cost of electricity zoom up as we add more battery operated crap.

There are many reasons why EVs are a bust …
    Insurance $$ … will rise bigly …
Gross fire hazard that can’t be put out …
Where are the chargers and how long will it take, how much range …
Cold weather Canada will have only half the range … why? Long cold winter …
    And finally …
Who can afford a 75K virtue signalling toy to pick up the groceries with.
    .
One more thing … Big rigs and airplanes will never run on battery because the batteries are incredibly heavy …. too heavy to be practical … and very toxic.

    .

  9. Let us not all forget that this is a government which can’t make money selling recreational drugs.

  10. Will the money disappear in that black pit like the money sole sourced to a bio-lab that produced nothing.

  11. Trudeau is malicious, bent on destroying middle class taxpayers through debt bondage/indentured servitude/serfdom.

    1. It’s called “degrowth”, very popular with the Planet Savers. Of course, what they really want is “depopulation”.

  12. Let’s hope the agreement between VW and the Feds is one that requires VW to make the expenditure and seek reimbursement.
VW will not be spending that kind of money in the current market. They probably wouldn’t even be able to raise the interim funding – even with (maybe especially with) a Canadian government long term funding agreement.

  13. 200 years of seeking the battery that will make electric cars practical.
The battery that is made from unobtainium and charged up using Unicorn farts.
    Perfection.
Of course the Liberals will throw billions at it..
Just as long as fellow liberals own and operate the “private Businesses” harvesting these subsidies.
And when the money is all spent and stolen?
“What do you mean, there are no Unicorns?”

  14. Set in stone.. The Canadian Gov. is just funding the jobs that academia is producing.. and you thought the politicians were calling the shots ?.. You have no idea how things work..
