Not that I am paying much attention but it strikes me comical/sad that the CPC cannot entice any of the substantive ex-cabinet members to run. Politics in Canada has been reduced to eye candy status.
The Turdeau/Harper campaigns hardly dealt with any of the serious challenges faced by Canada. Progressives love this as they can continue their subjective BS without simple math challenging their perceptions. Unfortunately most CPC politicos have adopted the same process.
Many ‘old’ conservatives that I talk to are clocking out of the process. Some retire to the golf course and others are expecting a financial collapse. Either way reality will not be recovered by political means.
He saw the light.
Spud is here to stay.
He probably is. I heard somewhere recently that nearly 50% of all journalists in Canada are on the CBC payroll. Putin gets full journalistic support by killing the few dissenters, Trudeau and the liberals pay them off.
The path is clearing slightly for Maxime Bernier. Of the current field he is easily philosophically the most conservative. HE has put in much effort to demonstrate that to the critical western (read: Alberta) base of the party. i’m not sure if he has done enough – yet.
Bernier has to come out and call Climate Change the fraud that it is. Playing footsie with this issue plays into the hands of the left.
Time to take a stand. The correct stand.
Carrying on pretending its real in hopes you wont lose the LIV vote is not going to work.
Its not a hard case to make that AGW is a fraud (show how the oft quoted 97% concensus is an utter fraud).
Given that the ultimate goal of the promoters of Climate change is control of the worlds life blood and as such humanity, I think Bernier should get out in front of this.
We are not going to balance any budgets with windmills and solar farms. We will with resource extraction and sales.
For now, just showing the fraud in the green cure for climate change is a good step. Fraud in actual projects. Fraud in the claims of technical performance (amount/reliability of power generated). Fraud in claiming to lower CO2 enough to make any difference. Then point out the fraud of climate change doom.
There is a God! Now to get him completely out of politics and into a job as a flipper in a burger joint.
Max Bernier is a great conservative, although as a leader it may be too philosophical.
I don’t think the potato will stick for another four years. The reason: after well organized government management by not that very conservative boring accountant named Harper, the present crew is all flash and mess – high hopes turning into high disappointments – even or particularly among supporters.
There is a God.
It’s a good thing that Bernier is still in the conservative party. He can’t lead but he still can be heard.
The conservative party desperately needs something to rally behind. In Britain the Brexit vote has focused conservatives. They have their eye on the ball like they haven’t since Thatcher.
Here,if they fail, we might have Spud around for as long as the old man – 16 years.
CT, I agree, even if a bit more aggressively than you. Who cares about the CPC? I mean really!
Bernier is going to be our savior? Make me laugh!
Her Majesty’s Royal Aquiesers are made up of useless idiots. Well, unless you are a Liberal, then they are quite useful idiots. With the LPC purchasing the CBC with taxpayer money as their personal, full-time marketing arm, these f*cking CPC idiots just keep playing the same old game, completely delusional that the playing field isn’t severely tilted against them. Every time I see one of them interacting with the CBC, it becomes painfully obvious to me they don’t even understand who their enemies are. Oh well, at least they keep their spots at the trough by pretending to be true conservatives.
Global Warming, Defunding the CBC, Islamic Immigration, Election System, Terrorism, Energy Independence, Reducing Debt Or Bureaucracy, Keeping Illegal Immigrants from remaining MP’s, etc, etc, etc, etc. Please name ANY portfolio where these useless twats are making a difference. Shit, they couldn’t even make a difference when they controlled a majority.
They have NO RIGHT to my vote just because the word “Conservative” is in their party name.
Tony is a good man, but his time has passed.
He did really excellent work at treasury board, keeping government spending down. He deserves credit and respect for that unglorious but very important contribution.
Presumably you are not a liberal and actually want a change in government.
What is it that you would propose that would bring about that change. I too want change. How do we achieve it?
400,000 and 40,000?
What the…?
Is that a joke?
I guess we’re done with him too. I doubt that many conservatives see further flooding Canada with the third world as a “core value”.
It may well end up being Bernier vs Leitch. Chong seems to be in limbo. Invisible.
Well, Bernier has my vote for now. At least he has principles, even if he probably can’t achieve most of what he wants. In any case, they are all sacrificial lambs for now. I’d rather stand up for Bernier than for Leitch.
There are no conservatives in Canada … we live in a fake democracy.
“What is it that you would propose that would bring about that change. I too want change. How do we achieve it?”
A great question, abtrapper, how about this?
All us concerned conservatives should get together and start a new party, we could give it a profound name like “The Reform Party”. Then we could get behind the leader of that party and fight like hell to help them become the next governing party of this great nation. I am absolutely 110% sure they would not become a liberal-lite entity pretty much discernible from real liberals. Pfffft, who looks at history to learn anything these days.
The fact Brad Wall is pretty much the only conservative in Canada not too scared sh*tless to speak out about the filthy lies of the left shouldn’t be a concern. What movement needs a qualified leader, anyways?
OK, abtrapper, you got me, I have no brilliant plan to save Canada. But, I am pretty goddamn sure that wasting time with this diversion from find finding real people with real solutions for real problems isn’t an answer either.
No… there are conservatives in Canada. Just far, far fewer in number than we would need to actually achieve anything conservative in this country.
And Chris Alexander should be shot with a ball of his own feces and expelled from the party for demonstrating such complete idiocy.
I thought Alexander was a clever fellow, he’s not showing it coming out talking about bringing in more refugees and immigrants at 400,000 per year? Holy shiite, is he off his head altogether?
I think Bernier or Leitch is all there is, I wouldn’t give Chong the time of day.
Perhaps more that there are better people to oppose “spud”. Bernier would be a good choice, I think — Chris Alexander or even Kellie Leitch. What you see today is not likely how Canadians will feel when the next Federal Election rolls around as the Liberals are pulling some nasty stunts (like ignoring the illegality of a cabinet minister’s citizenship, foisting a tax hike via a carbon tax and failing to deal with some economic vulnerabilities. They will be remembered.
Immigration is not the problem. Huge numbers of Muslims with cultural differences with respect to Canadian values are the actual threat. Certainly uneducated and backward cultures are a problem — so that things like family reunification if overdone to include grandparents for example, also is a problem. But people coming from other countries where cultures are compatible and where they bring skills would be an economic plus. I would anticipate an increase in applications coming from Europe and the UK where things have taken a turn for the worst. India these days has many skilled and well-educated people.
There is an opportunity for somebody to take a really strong stand on the progressive agenda of lies and deception.
Problem is, there will be just as many trying to offer a slightly watered down version that they think will earn them pats on the back from the CBC and Globe and Mail.
Myabe it’s just time to go back to the split party and give these two camps their own space, the fusion project only ended in disappointment and the fault was all handed to the conservative side of the PC alliance, when in fact the progressive side was always losing ground pre-merger.
Some say Justin Trudeau is a formidable force, I say he’s a farm-outable farce. So far he’s following the Obama template, spend money you don’t have, preen for the cameras, and make sweeping pronouncements that have no connection to the real world. This is as much laughable as dangerous. What I fear is a harder more cynical person like Hillary Clinton or ??? in Canadian terms taking over. Then the one-party state bites hard and the sunny ways are long gone.
I agree, we need to start bringing in more immigrants from countries whose “culture” is compatible with ours. BUT, what are our cultures now? We seem to be bending and abandoning ours to avoid offending or making people not of our cultural background….this is the Liberal way. If Alexander is talking about more refugees from Syria as well, he’s really not too swift out of the gate on that one.
I don’t care any more. It doesn’t matter who is in charge, no one is going to be able to save us. Whatever crap they do to me they are also doing it to themselves, and if they think they can survive it I am confident that I can survive it. If they want to burn the country to the ground I say let them.
He will challenge P’ti’ P’tate for the women vote and the Quebec vote. And he’s conservative/libertarian – good for the RoO vote.
Sandra Jansen is one who takes the Progressive part of the Progressive Conservatives literally. She was a Redford sidekick and I’m sure she only became a PC because it was the only route to power at the time. Now she thinks that the PC party must remain as it was when Redford led it. She just doesn’t get that people won’t vote for a supposed Progressive party when they can have the real thing in the NDP.
I was in business here in AB when spuds old man dropped the NEP on us. It was way worse then then it is now….but give it time. I know lots of people who lost their homes. Ag went south as well. Good farmland was owned by financial institutions everywhere. Did the autawa elites give a damn? They wont this time either.
Spud is closing the snare on the west the same way the old man did. Win 60 seats in quebek, run the table in ON. Fish world is good for the balance. Another majority.
Sure the CPC isn’t what we on this site would like but baby it’s all we got. It’s delusional to think that a real small c conservative party would sell in Canada. There wont be a Preston Manning to form another party and a Steven Harper to bring the warring factions of conservatism together and form government.
If the conservatives cannibalize themselves like they are capable of get ready for an extended version of “Trudeau, the Sequel”.

I agree the CPC whatever its laws is all we have in Canada. Jr should not be underestimated, he is capable of all the excesses of Trudeau 1 plus more. He has no ideology except to compare, compete with his father.
If Minister Monsef and her string pullers are able to change the way votes are counted, and there is little indication of any fight back against these half baked schemes, it will matter not a whit if Leitch, Bernier or Joe Blow is the leader, a majority conservative government will an elusive relic of the past. Ken,
When 60% of the country regularly votes progressive even ‘first past the post’ usually does not yield a conservative majority. I am not convinced that the Liebels will bring proportional representation in unless polls suggest they are losing. They have as much fear from the Dippers and Greenies as they do from the CPC.
My disillusionment with the CPC began far before their electoral loss. Harper had a residual support from the West due to his Reform origins. Once the CPC formed government it almost immediately became ‘top down management of the riding associations that got them elected. So bad that I left our riding Board. The CPC made little effort in establishing a philosophical base among members let alone the general public. I am not embarrassed to be a conservative but I did not always get the same feeling from my party. The CPC was supposed to be the Party of free enterprise. Their failure in organizing the Party with a coherent business plan is inexcusable. Absolutely laughable that their main electronic communication with membership was a one way request for funding!
Let alone the problems within the party there were mega issues that were never addressed IMHO. Progressives control education, media and the public service. The CPC did little or nothing to attack those pillars from a majority position of strength. This was not only a tactical failure but a massive strategic loss.
Conservative philosophy and politics seldom mesh. Politics is the art of the possible.
We conservatives think that a political party with the name conservative in it actually means something. Case in point are a couple of 40 year uninterrupted reigns of provincial government in ON and AB. These parties were progressive conservatives. I don’t think 50% of Albertan’s even thought for a minute what the word ‘progressive’ meant. The progressives sure did because they all voted PC knowing full well what the party was.
So, what’s in it for us? Not much really. Canada is a progressive country. We have implemented ALL the policies of any progressive/liberal country with the exception of a guaranteed annual income – which the PC’s in ON are now contemplating. The best we conservatives can do is try and influence government. This, as PET famously pointed out is done by getting involved in the political process not opting out. It is politics after all. You’ve probably noticed how our Asian immigrants quickly exert their influence on the political process once they arrive in Canada. If you want change you change the system from the inside.
Philosophy is for kitchen table discussion and running your personal life. In a democracy ideas on how to change the country take place in the political arena .
I fear our Conservative Party is headed back to it’s “put the emphasis on ‘Progressive’ past. Where will we true vonservatives park our votes now? I can guarantee that they’re unlikely to get further donations from me.
Not that I am paying much attention but it strikes me comical/sad that the CPC cannot entice any of the substantive ex-cabinet members to run. Politics in Canada has been reduced to eye candy status.

Former immigration minister Chris Alexander has confirmed he plans to run for the Conservative leadership and that a key plank of his campaign will be a proposal to sharply increase the intake of immigrants to 400,000 every year, including 40,000 refugees, because “this is a core value for me and for Canada.”

And in related news another liberal is running for PC leader in Alberta.
