  1. The current list of Canadian goods that are subject to US imports tariffs is confusing as hell and constantly in flux. As of today, energy products (oil, gas, coal, uranium), potash, steel, aluminium, copper, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors are all subject to US imports tariffs even when they originate in Canada. Some lumber products are currently subject to tariffs, but that could greatly expand in both scope and rate in September.

It’s a pity the interviewer didn’t challenge the ambassador on his allegation that only a few products were subject to tariffs.

      1. “I’m still trying to figure out why Canada put retaliatory tariffs on sports equipment.”

Desperation, would be my guess. They are flailing about trying to find something (anything!) that they could possibly use to embarrass Donald Trump…because Canada doing any actual damage to the American economy is a pipe dream, and they know it.

    1. “It’s a pity the interviewer didn’t challenge the ambassador on his allegation that only a few products were subject to tariffs.”

She didn’t need to. He explained it quite well: the United States has imposed tariffs ONLY on products not covered by our existing trade agreement (which is perfectly legal).

Canada, on the other hand, has deliberately *violated* the existing USMCA/CUSMA agreement with our own retaliatory tariffs. Not smart.

      1. Incorrect. The US has tariffs on some Canadian goods regardless of USMCA compliance, including steel, aluminium, lumber, and auto parts.

The US likes to present it self as an innocent victim in trade disputes. They are a long way from that.

        1. Also copper and potash.

The last one is insane. It just drives up the price of fertilizer, and therefore food. It will decades for the US to replace Canadian potash with their own, if it’s even possible.

        2. No, it doesn’t, that’s Canada’s thing. You’re projecting again. The US presents itself as “we have the economic clout to not have to make bad deals, and it’s high time we started using it”.

          1. I’ve heard Trump whine numerous times about how unfair the international trading system is, and how the US is being taken advantage of.

            And so have you.

    2. So …

      1. How many different products originate in Canada? Thousands? Duh. Of course there is going to be a complex web of products getting tariffed. Why would you expect tariffs … equivalent tariffs … to only include a few items?
      2. Why wouldn’t MORE Canadian products become subject to tariffs? When your PM and his team of crack negotiators behave like Vlad Putin … then why wouldn’t Trump double-down HARD.

Go ahead … run to the “safety” of the EU … or India … or Communist China as you become another ‘C’ in the BRICC’s … All in all you’re just another BRICC in the wall … and that’s not a good thing … if you follow.

      1. Canadian manufacturers should sell to whatever country is willing to give them the best price. If the US doesn’t want some of our products, so be it.

  2. I think Canada is well on it’s way to getting singled out. This will all probably wait until the sunset renegotiation of USMCA.
    BTW (most distracting)
    Are those mammograms?

  3. On X the comments on this are quite telling. Traitor; Liar; Orange Man Bad and his ambassador is a lackey and a liar.
Good grief. Don’t people think it is useful to know what the other side is thinking? And when the other side spells it out clearly there is a complete freak out.

  4. A fine diplomat,so careful to lay it all out..
So politely describing Canadians as the petulant ignorant preschoolers we are.
Little Napoleon’s every where, marching their imaginary forces to “great victories”.
Canadian’s seem to be willfully ignorant of the most basic facts..
    Self interest is sane behaviour.

The American President is duty bound to act in America’s interest.
Canadian “Leadership” has no idea what Canada’s best interests are..Based on their actions of the last 6 decades.
In fact the question must be asked..
If our leaders had intended the destruction of Confederated Canada…What would they have done differently?
