  1. Hailing the Knights Templar & fellow crusaders! Cosplay on the Hill!
    Christian symbols welcome!

  2. What? The Government didn’t think of inserting a masked arsehole carrying a confederate flag?

      1. They didn’t. Not mosques, not Hindu temples, not gurdwaras, probably not Buddhist temples… same as they didn’t shut down Canadian Tire, Walmart and Costco. Oh and the LCBO and the weed stores.

And you did not hear about it either.

  3. Yank here, where we allow concealed carry of firearms (yes, HANDGUNS!) in some of our legislative bodies. (For those concerned about the rampant wild-west shootouts that must follow the handguns — nope, those are reserved for places with the strictest gun laws.)

Unless you’re Indira Gandhi, you won’t have anything to worry about from those little knives that the Sikhs carry.
Beware of the smiling liberal, or the state-subsidized journalist, or clergy from the state-run Canadian churches. That last one could cost you your soul.

    1. Canuck here. It’s not the carrying of ceremonial knives into our legislature that we object to. It’s the fact that weapons are prohibited (concealed or non-concealed), yet some groups (one in particular) are allowed in with little knives and bigger swords while other groups cannot carry weapons of any sort. Seems rather unfair. They also don’t have to wear motorcycle helmets or RCMP caps while everyone else does. Because … it’s the law. But hey, I’ll shut-up now because I’m Canadian and we don’t like to complain.

    2. Why is it that the Sikhs get a special deal? That’s the objection, not tiny little ceremonial knives.

And yes, it would be better if lawmakers and cops were told to step off about what’s in our pockets. If they’re that worried about Joe Average carrying a folder, then most likely ol’ Joe has ample reason to be upset.

      1. A dispute about this a few years gave California Sikhs permission to carry their ceremonial daggers to K-12 schools. What could go wrong?

    3. Unless you are Manjit Mangat (stabbed, and survived), or Paul Schmidt (Stabbed and died), you have nothing to worry about… unless you are involved with one of the competing factions at the various Brampton Temples

  4. There was a case back in a day where a Sikh kid was allowed to carry a knife in school. Not only that, it was the St. Albert Protestant Separate School Board. Knives are not part of Protestant doctrine. The religious flotsam and jetsam were intended to go to the Catholic public school but religious boundaries are not strictly enforced. My grand kids go to a Catholic school in Alberta because it’s a free Christian education albeit not all that much Christian.

A question I have pondered since the Charter of Rights came on stream. If a Hutterite joined the army, could he wear a black outfit with a checkered shirt? As a pacifist could he be excused from carrying a gun? Who do we cater to and who don’t we cater to? Why? I suspect a lot more than half of Sikh men don’t do the turban thing.

    1. In the US many Hutterites were drafted. They became medics as a firearm wasn’t required.

    2. A Hutterite could probably join the Canadian Army on those terms if he claimed he wanted to get his artillery exchanged for a slit-trench.

  5. Back in the day, I remember that kirpans were allowed only if they were “peace bonded”, the handle was wired to the blade so the knife couldn’t be drawn. If that’s no longer the case I wonder what the argument was for dropping the peace bond.

  6. Its funny how much Canadian Law stabs Canadians in the back.
I know, I know, many Sikhs are Canadian, Canadian, Canadian.
Just ask the Cree or the Algonquin or Micmac.
