Socialized Dentistry

Carney announced this morning on social media that his government will be expanding government subsidized dental care dramatically. This is exactly how Medicare got started, with the state footing the bill for some expenses and insurance which gradually morphed into a complete prohibition on any private payments. How long will it be before cash strapped governments throttle payments to dentists, resulting in people being unable to find a dentist at all? Probably not that long.

  1. Soon Canadians will have chompers resembling those of their cousins in the mother country. Yay socialism!

    1. The night we drove old dentists down!

Will Dentists be headed out of the country in droves — mostly to the other 48 contigous states?

I already have to pucker up my courage to visit the Dentist, now he is going to be a bureaucrat. That shoud boost his loveability!!!???!!!

  2. B.C. NDP put in taxpayer paid for dental care, I think it was back in the 80’s, it quietly disappeared in a little over a year. I guess they discovered it’s cost was so high even the NDP could not justify it.

    1. Remember, Carney’s a central banker. He’ll probably just invoke “QE (Quantitative Easing) Dental” or somesuch to print money to pay for dentacare forever. I can’t recall, but God help us if he’s also a devotee of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT).

  3. So Carnival con man Mark Carney right off the bat is purchasing the Immigrant vote in anticipation of another election coming up soon. Especially in his little posting about people who haven’t seen a dentist in decades. Do you really think that’s canadians? Or is this free dental care for all the third world immigrants that have never seen a dentist in their life because they come from a third world shithole. Looks like all the millions of third world immigrants that the Liberal Party government of Canada has brought to Canada in the last 10 years, many of them, many many of them being brought to Canada in their 50s 60s 70s and even 80 year olds are instantly eligible for some of that free health care and Dentistry even though none of them have contributed anything to this country. But it’s all free free free free!!. Haven’t heard any real announcements in the last few weeks about meeting our NATO goals with 2% of GDP for our military. Because you can’t have free dentistry for the masses and 2% of GDP for our military. Certainly not at the same time.

  4. FREE SASKABERTA, FFS!!!!
We REALLY need a new country, and like YESTERDAY!!!!!

      1. I have been saying it for years. Join Alberta and Saskatchewan and a part of Manitoba to the Hudson’s Bay and connected to all of Northern Ontario as far south as one of the Great Lakes ,as well as part of British Columbia to the ocean will become one country that will be the richest country on the whole of planet Earth. Riches for every person in this new country, riches beyond your dreams of avarice! The smallest house a 3000 ft ,5 bedroom home, the people’s car would be a Cadillac for everyone.
        And no Leftists allowed!!

        1. Imagine being Independent from the Federal govt. No Federal income tax, No GST, No carbon tax, No insane Climate Change regulations, No 15 Billion dollar transfer payments to QC, etc, etc.

  5. All will get the same level of care.

Please invoke your powers to secondary and tertiary effects of such aspirations?

Tooth Ache? Have you considered MAID?

    1. I not the age group does not include me, a very old geezer. Oh, well, there is always Maid.

  6. How about “free” soap for the great unwashed.

Somebody tell Carbonated Marx that EVERYBODY could afford dental care if we got rid of the original socialist theft – Employment Insurance.

In the Turdhole Dystopia you can brush your teeth all you want, but the government keeps feeding you shit.

    1. Sorry Buddy, over the next year or so, we are going to have free buggery for all – by the Liberati.

      1. Well, if the LIberals pay jihadis to bugger MAID applicants to death, they’re satisfying three chunks of their voter base and achieving efficiency in doing it. Some policies commend themselves.

  7. This all works great until the creditors decide you’re too risky to be given a loan and the actuarial wizkids tell the central bankers that unless they raise interest rates those assets cannot be insured.
    That leaves them two choices.
Cut spending to the bone, or have the central bank print off a ton of depreciating currency.
I lived through this after the dumpster fire left by the first Trudeau that got started by Lethter Pearthon.
Not shocked that our betters forgot this recent piece of history, but hey, orange man bad and all that.
    Enjoy the decline

    1. Governments love inflation. They have an appreciation for depreciating debts.

  8. Government healthcare:
when your customer is Government (the body who pays),
the patient is merely the body that gets in the way.

Anticipate a Canadian Dentist Exodus to the US.

  9. The Eloi don’t miss the NDP and why would they when the LPC is their seamless replacement. The Conservative advisors are likely telling their caucus that they need to get on board with it. This is derangement number 6347 that will never disappear within confederation. Escape is easier than never being in control.

  10. Socialized medicine, dental, housing, food, transportation, news and entertainment. Oh what a glorious utopia we will have comrades!

Canadians have got to be the dumbest people on the planet.

The sooner we leave this dumpster fire the better.

  11. would be a godsend for most first nations but i suspect they are already on the enamel dole .

did you know that first nations invented the tooth brush? otherwise it would have been called a teeth brush.

  12. Its been two years I have been in the land of the eastern sea. I can’t get a doctor. Get the medical system working before you screw up anything else.
Plant a tree – we have politicians needing hanging

  13. And we have the dentists and assistants to take care of this increased demand?

  14. Carney must trying to get a few NDP MP’s to cross the floor.
What are wait times for emergency dentistry now? It’s going to get worse.

  15. This was already planned.
Just recycling previous announcements to make it look like he’s doing something.

  16. You may end up living in a homeless camp and go line up at the food bank, but at least you will have clean teeth.

  17. The Bureaus have to take over Dental Care.
    Their jobs depend on it.

    Current situation polar opposites;
    Medical Care.
You wait, you may die waiting ,get mediocre medical care, pay huge taxes .
    Accountability?
These helpers accidentally kill around 30 000 Citizens per year.

    Dental.
Quick professional service, attention to detail and skilled hands.
    Expensive?
About the same as maintaining a car.
    Accountability?
Mine fixes his very few failures.
    Free.
So no I do not want Government helping my dentist.
I do not mind paying for professional care..
I bitterly resent paying for “Care” I never receive.
    “Free healthcare” my ass.

    Maybe these “helpers” could make
Healthcare” functional..before they drive my dentist into retirement.
Which is the usual result of such Government help.

  18. Why set up a whole new bureaucracy? Why don’t they just fund extractions under provincial health plans because infected teeth can kill you? Maybe throw in fillings. Forget everything else. The whole problem with dentistry is the cost seems to be open ended and any dentist can find a dozen potential fillings in any mouth that has a good dental plan. Are there even enough dentists to do all the work?

  19. Dentists are not required to participate. Asked mine about the gov plan, he stated that the fee schedule did not meet their needs so they won’t participate.
The expectation is that third world and newb dentists will be desperate to establish their practices. You get what you pay for.
On another note, a friend received a note from his pension plan, that because he was not participating in the dental option on his plan, he did not qualify for the government dental. Somehow the Feds have been in contact with the insurers and pension plans, to ensure that rich pensioners don’t game the system, to get “free” Gubmint care.
Always wondered about that loophole, since some dental plans thru pensions are over $100/mo, which is robbery unless you’ve got the teeth from hell.

  20. Simple question. Do the people getting “free” Canadian Dental Plan care pay the same amount as I do for dental services even when it’s covered by the government? Or will I pay more for the same service? Because that wouldn’t be fair, right? Or will they just increase my taxes? I’m confused by all this free stuff. It’s like the ghost of Justin Trudeau is balancing the budget again.

    1. The Government Plan, will control costs by fixing the prices, at a rate below what it actually costs to provide the service. What this means is that those not covered by the plan will have to make up the difference, much in the same way that American Health care works with Medicare.

  21. If you don’t have benefits, getting dental work is very expensive. I just had two small filings and 2 xrays and the cost was almost $800. With my plan, it cost me $285. My dentist said the government plans covers the work I had done as well as root canals. Just imagine the cost to taxpayers.

  22. Met privatized medicine head on yesterday. A crack occurred in an ancient root canal and I had a consultation with the oral surgeon. It took 2 days from the time my dentist gave me the bad news until I met with a specialist. A quick inspection and voila. Nothing $6500 and an implant can’t fix. We start the process in 2 weeks. It would have been sooner but both he and I are away for a week mid month. No insurance.

Try that with your medical doc. You wait months to see a specialist and years in some cases for treatment. The only other medicine that can respond that quickly is veterinary. Instant access.

Another government medical program and our dentistry grads will start heading south.

  23. Carney’s such an idiot he didn’t even do it to placate the lunatic dippers. Way to go boomtards, you’ve elected a complete idiot.

  24. While everyone seems intend on blaming the ‘Boomers’ just remember who voted for the legalization of pot and started this descent into oblivion in 2015.

  25. I have to tell you all about the town of Los Algodones, Baja California, Mexico.

The town is shaped like a triangle. Across one edge is Arizona (it’s right next to Yuma). Across the second edge is California. Across the third edge is a Mexican military base. It’s completely cut off from the rest of Mexico.

In that town of 5000 people there are 550 dental offices. The rest of the town is all medical tourism: prosthetics, optometrists, pharmacies, you name it.

I got all my teeth done there. Three root canals, two implants, 26 crowns altogether. The total cost for everything was US$10400. I couldn’t even had gotten the lab work done for that amount in Alberta. Add in airfare, ground transport, hotels, meals, it’s still cheaper than getting dental work done up here.

    1. As a retired dentist, I hate to tell you, but you didn’t get a deal. In an over 40 year career in 2 provinces, and seeing hundreds of cases of Mexican dentistry, I can count on 1 hand results that were equal to what you would get in Canada. Everything else was so awful that if it had been done in the area I am from, I would have reported it to the dental association and told the patient that they had a malpractice case. For example, patients would think that had gold crowns but they weren’t, or porcelain crowns but they were plastic. Root canals that should have had 4 canals filled but only 1 had been filled, and poorly at that. Sometimes with materials that were not allowed in Canada or the States. Perfectly good teeth that never should have been crowned, were. I could go on and on. Often we would see a patient because they were having problems with their work done in Mexico. It was often so poorly done that it caused secondary problems and we couldn’t salvage the teeth. If we could it was far more then it would have been if done properly the first time, plus what they paid in Mexico. It really gutted me how these patients were taken advantage of.

In fairness Alberta does have the highest fees in the country, but for those considering going to Mexico, depending on the province, the difference in fees may only be a saving of 10-20%. It’s not really worth it.

In response to what other people have commented. I have never seen quality work from any socialized dental systems. Japan has socialized dentistry. We all know Japan for having exacting standards and good quality in what they manufacture. Their dental materials are some of the best. The dental treatment however is an exception. I have seen a lot of it, and very surprisingly, it is truly 3rd world. Better then Mexico but not by much. There is the usual jokes about the UK and they were all warranted until maybe 20 years ago. Now they have the private and government programs. It was easy to tell who had work done by each program. The government program had crappy treatment and results. The private patients had work as good as you could get here most of the time. That is what I foresee happening here. Before the universal dental care program the government paid the dentist per procedure around what it cost to provide on about a 1/3 of the cases and less then it cost to provide treatment for the other 2/3’s. We made no money on the treatment but did it to essentially give back to the community as a volunteer. When more and more of the people are covered by a government plan this will no longer be feasible. Options are to start running a dental mill. Use second grade materials, rush through with no standards and always overtreat. The other option is to only be private and maintain your standards and provide the best treatment your patients expect even though you will be less busy. You will be able to see the private dentists quickly to get your issues solved. The dental mills the for the patients who want the government to pay will be booked up months in advance. As someone mentioned about the women who needed a CAT scan for a brain tumor and need to wait for months, this is how it is for dentistry in the government line for dental treatment in the UK. The patients I would treat from the UK on the government plan who came to see me on an emergency basis could not believe the difference in treatment we provided for them. How quickly they could come in, how much more comfortable the treatment was, how much better the restorations were and how much better they were treated on a personal level.

What a lot of people don’t realize is that the government dental plan will quickly kill private dental plans. Employer funded dental plans are really in lieu of money going to the worker. This works out better, as it is not taxable to the worker as income. Companies will stop providing dental plans as the employees will probably start asking for money instead because they can get on the “free” government plan. This will skyrocket the amount of money needed by the government to pay for dental treatment. So guess what, taxes will increase. Now people are paying the same amount or more for crappy socialized dental care. The “unintended” problem that anyone with half a brain could have seen in advance.

  26. Because of this plan, millions of people will now be poorer due to increased taxes and inflation.

  27. Well, it isn’t like you could not see this coming. The liberals need the NDP. This crew of NDP are the hard-core and popular NDP MP that were not dragged down by Jagmeet. The insisted on a public announcement by the liberals in exchange for their support, before any chance of a public vote, so that the liberals are locked into their demands quick.
