An odd sounding message indeed, surely a more appropriate message would be “we will await with interest the outcome of the Canadian election and hope to meet the next elected prime minister of Canada to discuss all important concerns” — this sounds like Trump or whoever wrote the message expects Carney to win.

    I like 90% of Trump’s agenda but I think the administration should stay on the sidelines as far as our election goes, and they should have waited for 90 days before imposing any tariffs on Canada, to see what the decision was here. It’s legitimate for them to want us to spend more on military and border security but placing all this pressure during an election campaign is counter to their own best interests. It shows a lack of subtlety in thought processes that does not really surprise me. But it is what it is, we’re stuck with this and if Trump unintentionally saddles us with another Liberal government it will likely lead to huge national unity problems later this year and for the foreseeable future. If that’s the plan and the reason, it amounts to interference in our internal affairs and is a hostile act against the Canadian people.

      Canada has been laggard since WW2, not doing her share in NA defense, nor they NATO obligations, so why does it take a USA president to make them do so, and it ain’t just the bureaucrats and politicians who are at fault , it’s also voters, who use the wrong criteria to place their votes.

      Our own government has been hostile towards what made Canadians Canadian.
      Who’s worse? Considering in these matters there are no accidents.

    3. And why should we wait with regards to reciprocating tariffs? It isn’t like Pollievre has made comments that are not “Team Canada, Elbows Up!” himself. To be fair to Canadians? To be nice to them? To honor their sacred elections? To honor the moral code/global rules based order, something like that?

      We don’t care who you get. And also, no word from my President on any backing off of the tariffs, not in that post — he’s had ‘nice, productive phone calls’ with Zelensky and just about everyone else. He’s not going to be handing your government a blank check no matter who gets in.

  5. Yeah, something just changed. Carney just checkmated Poilievre on Trump. The incumbency advantage; as sitting PM, Carney’s able to place that call and have that discussion. Trump issuing this statement gives the Liberals an atomic sledgehammer for the rest of the campaign: “We’re standing up for Canada, and president Trump respects Mark Carney’s strong leadership!”

    There’s no avenue that Poilievre can take against that. He can’t call Trump, and even if he could, he’d be a day late and a dollar short. There’s no line of attack he can levy against Trump’s statement that won’t sound desperate.

    If Trump backs off on the tariffs against Canada next week, no matter how small, it’s another Carney win: “Mark Carney’s strong leadership led president Trump to back down from his aggressive tariffs!” If that comes to pass, the fat lady’s singing. It’ll be all over but the counting. The centrists will flock to Carney in droves and we’ll have another four years of Liberal majority government. The election map will look like 1997 or 2000. Red everywhere except AB & SK. Hell, you’ll see Liberals elected in the cities in AB & SK even.

    My God, I hate the Liberal Party of Canada. Their powerlust, their corruption, their arrogance, their self-righteousness. I hate that it works and that this country wants nothing better for itself than Liberals.

  9. I really don’t see this as anything but Trump accepting the reality that a majority will vote for Carney and elect him instead of just having him installed. PP seems like a nice enough uy but without the fire or support to actually do anything. Obviously, all I know about him is from reading these august pages and comments.

    Or, this is actually 47 d chess and Trump making nice with Carney will propel Canadians to hate him and vote for PP. Hardly, election intergerence.

  11. Having Carney win the election is the fastest way to destabilize Canada and neuter any chance of a Canadian economic recovery. Separatist voices are growing louder in Alberta and Saskatchewan, although central and eastern Canada are too far away to hear. If Carney wins, watch for Trump to quickly widen the chasm between Alberta and Saskatchewan & the rest of Canada.

    I’m guessing that Trump’s support for Carney is tactical. A strategic temporary pause on economic pressure to allow the voters in eastern and central Canada to install another weak, woke, green, anti-Alberta/Sask leader. Voters in the eastern half of Canada are pretty easily fooled by shallow flattery and vote buying. They won’t know what hit them until it’s too late if Carney is elected as prime minister.

    1. A Carney-Liberal government with a majority mandate would be just enough for the feds to hit the west hard with the biggest hammer they can find.
      If these bastards are emboldened by the election, we’re going to look back on the implementation of the EA as mild in comparison.

      1. I don’t think Alberta and Saskatchewan would stay long enough for that to happen. The rest of Canada thinks the Clarity Act would prevent separation. The Clarity Act is a piece of paper that is as worthless and unenforceable as the civil rights protections in Canadian Constitution and the safeguards written into Emergency Act. Canada can try to enforce the Clarity Act and maybe 20 or so years down the road international court will hear the case but at that point Alberta and Saskatchewan will already be long gone.

      1. I also suspect that the USA has damaging information on Carney and others in the Liberal Party. The Liberals are a slimy group that operates more like an organized crime syndicate than a legitimate government. Perhaps Trump will make Carney and company an offer they dare not refuse.

        Alberta and Saskatchewan would add a resource rich territory about twice the size of Texas. I think the Americans would get a fair trade, though I would prefer to be an independent territory.

      I’m truly aghast at Trump’s post this morning.
      Not only did it make the unelected caretaker PM look “prime-ministerial,” it could bury PP’s hopes of winning the election completely.
      This is very poor, knee-jerk reaction on the part of Trump. If that’s Trump’s strategy, It’s been poorly thought out IMHO, but I’ve underestimated him before, so let’s see how this develops.

      1. Trump really doesn’t care who wins in Canada. If anything, he would prefer Carney, since Carney obviously does belong to and speak for the government. Poilievre can only be some schmuck who has a majority in Parliament, which may be good for a complimentary latte at the Parliament Hill Starbucks but will not help in actually dealing with the government of Canada, which is in other hands entirely.

  14. Given his recent rhetoric and positions taken in statements in his “Values ” book ,I see little reason to believe Carney is seeking a resolution. Trump and the ensuing controversy is the Liberal pathway to victory. It is typical of Trump and his negotiations to make positive statements about those he is dealing with. We will see if Carny can avoid the trudeau path of immediately backstabbing.
    Given his previous stances , I think Carney will view this as another opportunity to proceed with the great reset. We build back better, now it is build back stronger. Prepare for wealth redistribution. Central bank digital currency and universal basic income. If you have been a prudent saver and successful, expect your access to those assets to be controlled. It’s for our own good and will be necessary to save the country! (sic) It is looking like there is enough sheep to keep them in power.

  20. The strategy here is “Divide and Conquer!” Soon to be known as the Trump Gambit.
    Quebec will not allow a pipeline east and will not tolerate interference in their egg and dairy quotas.
    Ontario Liberal base will vote Liberal no matter who is the leader.
    The Maritimes will always vote nationally for the Liberal meal ticket even when the Liberals allow foreign vessels to plunder our Atlantic fisheries because we have no navy to dissuade Chinese and Korean raiders.
    Manitoba and BC are wishy-washy and are non-players in the Election Game.
    Alberta and Saskatchewan are the Prize that Trump is after to extend the Monroe Doctrine. As it stands Alberta has been p*ssed at the rest of Canada ever since Pierre the Elder introduced the National Energy Scam. Saskatchewan is just catching up to how they are getting ripped off with their oil, potash, wheat, canola, and uranium tariffs. (CN and CP don’t help much with Saskatchewan’s position and a new north-south rail link would prove an advantage.)
    So Carney gets elected and Alberta and Saskatchewan opt for a separation referendum before Eastern Canada screws them over once more and with a guarantee of a bigger market via America financial aid, Trump wins.
    In as much as Greenland is concerned we will see something similar happening there. A major US naval station positioned in Greenland which would augment the base in Alaska will seal the North-West Passage and ensure the Security of America. I’m sure the citizens of Greenland would appreciate the economic benefits of twenty or thirty thousand military paychecks coming into the country every month.
    A fractured Canada wouldn’t last ten years before it would be clamoring for statehood.
    Forget the “Elbows Up” b*llsh*t, a better meme would be “Buckle Up” because we are in for a wild ride should the Liberals get back into office.
