Winnipeg Sun- City keeps report justifying $5M Omand’s Creek mega bridge secret
A local resident was skeptical after city officials insisted a short pedestrian bridge over Omand’s Creek in Wolseley be closed due to disrepair after years of flooding. When he discovered the projected replacement cost was pegged at $5 million, he wanted to check the facts for himself.

That article is displaying a pedestrian vs. bike rider mentality, and I doubt that is even the motivation behind the bridge renovation. I’d look closer at the bidding process on doing the construction, then compare it to all the other jobs that same contractor picked up over the recent past. Then, I’d determine what personal relationship existed between that contractor and various members of the local government. I’ll bet that is more telling.

A collection of corrupt or incompetent municipal governments contributes greatly to the making of a failed State. In fact, it necessarily precedes it!
I can rebuild that ‘bridge’ for 3 mil. Got my wheelbarrow and string level ready to go.
“I can rebuild that ‘bridge’ for 3 mil.”
So can the guy who will be doing the actual job.
The only difference is he’s kicking back other 2 mil to the bureaucrat who’s awarding him the job.
The biking bolsheviks in Winnipeg have to much sway in city hall.
““Bike Winnipeg supports the recommendation for the public service to be directed to proceed…” Was their submission to Public Works.””
How much government money is Bike Winnipeg getting? in 2022 it appears to be approximately $39,915 for various programs, so why is an organization who is getting money from the government advocating for anything to the same government that is paying them?
A developer in Pigeon Lake AB built a 100ft steel bridge in 2010 across a ravine that could easily handle multiple golf carts for ~$300K with not the slightest amount of movement. Where there’s the will to save money…
You could rebuild that thing in hand cut stone quarried in Brazil for less than $5 extra, extra, extra large
Why would that cost more than a few grand of treated wood and maybe 6 grand to bolt it together? I knew someone who built bridges in the backwoods for logging trucks. They were set on driven pilings and they only cost in the tens of thousands. They weren’t pretty but they carried an endless steam of overloaded trucks for years.
Winnipeg is very well known as the corruption capital of Manitoba.
The Bridge Over The Swamp.
Blow it up when the first cyclists traverse it
We already went through this on the tiny houses issue.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find you could order a ready-made bridge like the one in the picture from Amazon for what, $50k maybe $70k. I dunno.
Free shipping? Could get lucky on that.

Ah, here we go. Scroll through the images on the left of the main frame. There’s one shown that would be quite suitable.

Let’s say we “repurpose” some railroad flatcars …
How much of the price difference can I pocket as a “finders fee”? I’ll take 10% … a stunning bargain

But of course only after a wildlife biologist has surveyed all the local fauna … trapped as many rare newts they can … and prescribe a protection zone and detailed construction procedures … of course only after the site has been blessed by some indigenous holy man who declares the site free of any mass graves or shell mounds.
That’s so cool.
Same crap in our town. Millions spent on bike lanes that go days without seeing any cyclists.
Why? Because the council is full of lefty activists who plow funds into recycling, climate nonsense and other pet causes while stores close, crime rises and roads crumble.
And they will get re-elected too.
You know, in the states they’re getting rid of all these swampy types that burn through tax dollars like they’re nothing. And dangit if I don’t catch myself feeling sorry for some of them once in a while. Then, I read a story like this and it makes me wish we had the same thing going on here. There is zero respect shown for people that work their heart out to fill the coffers of these evil bastages. Fire them all and start over.
The CPC still refuses to get involved in municipal politics leaving the NDP free reign to bike lane every city in the country. Absolutely ridiculous.
There is no room in municipal politics for ‘party politics.’
Have we not had enough corruption at the federal/provincial level?
Doesn’t stop the NDP. They run most cities.
The bridge must be capable of carrying CAF troops on bicycles
(see Malaya circa 1942) to rapidly counter-attack any American incursions into
what parts of Canada aren’t First Nations.
A portion of the cost should come out of Canada’s NATO subscription fee.
Also, electric bicycles are trans motorcycles.
