The Island Laundromat

NY Post;

Since the 2010 earthquake in Haiti killed as many as 300,000 people, the US government has disbursed around $4.4 billion in foreign assistance to the small island nation.

At least $1.5 billion was disbursed for immediate humanitarian aid, while another $3 billion went to recovery, reconstruction and development.

Of the at least $2.13 billion in contracts and grants for Haiti-related work, less than $50 million, or 2% went to Haitian organizations or firms. By comparison, $1.3 billion, or 56%, has gone to firms located in or near the US capitol. Little wonder USAID is so threatened by the sudden scrutiny.[…]

USAID is not alone in the lack of accountability. One of the largest non-profit organizations involved in the Haitian emergency response, the Red Cross, raised an impressive $500 million for Haiti following the earthquake.

Yet, five years later, many, including former Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive, questioned whether most of these funds actually reached the Haitian population.

For instance, the Red Cross claimed they provided housing to over 130,000 people, but the organization only constructed six verifiable homes.

The Red Cross has refused to make available a list of the specific activities they conducted in Haiti, only providing a breakdown of the funds into large and non-descript “sectors” on their website.

  1. As silly as this may sound, if they gave half of that money to Trump with the intention to build housing, would suggest that there would be housing now and money left over.

  2. As I’ve said before, this is why I rarely donate to charities. I prefer to donate my time and skills directly to the front line work for the ones truly in need. In the case of disaster relief my go to charity is the Mennonite Central Committee. Other than that, you might as well take the cash out of an ATM and burn it.

    1. those BILLIONS & BILLIONS OF $$$$$ to Ukraine is just a money laundering exercise by the Biden Crime family, remember 10% for the BIG GUY, that rotten crooked Jos…….

    2. Over half, by some estimates, DOGE best to answer that question, and since they are now loose in the Pentagon, i expect that answer this week, which will make a lot of Ukranian supporters look very foolish, as it takes a donor, a recipient and a kickback to make it all go.

    3. “How much of aid to Ukraine was siphoned off?”

We will soon enough be finding out. Should be interesting…as Peter says, DOGE is already on it

  3. Didn’t the Red Cross get caught in 9-11 New York fundraising fraud where they were forced to cough up the funds to victims? I’m sure the number of people earning $ hundreds of grand working for the Red Cross would be impressive.

  4. When I ask people requesting funds for this sort of cause, typically in a grocery store or mall, I’ll ask what percentage actually goes to the cause, and what the fundraiser’s overhead is, I expect blank looks, or silence, and have never gotten a real response. I normally conclude with, “more than half the funds you raise from people goes to those corporate fundraisers offices, that silverware isn’t going to polish itself”

Unless it’s the UN types or USAID, then it’s closer to 2% to the cause.

And don’t talk about the Angolan peacekeepers and their gift of cholera to Haiti.

    1. I stopped giving to big charities. I only give to small local groups like our seniors or the local skating rink where I know who is getting the money and how it is being used.

  5. After Hurricane Michael the Red Cross advertised endlessly to give funds to help. Along the coast between Panacea and Franklin people were devastated. According to my friends there a single Red Cross truck drove through these small towns after the roads were cleared of debris. At Carabelle they were stopped by desperate residents hoping for water. The driver refused to distribute anything saying this truck was to go farther to Franklin and more aid was following right behind him in other trucks. So the residents let them go. In Franklin the truck distributed sandwiches and water bottles to about 100 people in a photo op session before running out and driving away. No other Red Cross trucks were seen.

  6. A full scale criminal audit is long overdue for these “NGOs” and fake Charities.
The use of tax payer dollars funnelled through these corrupt institutions has been an insult to tax payers from day one.
Government imposes all kinds of rules an regulations that made function impossible,so their solution has been Non Government Organizations 100% funded with tax payers money, who are able to evade accountability and worker compensation laws.
    Just another government lie.

  7. Samaritan’s Purse is apparently also a worthwhile charity. In the aftermath of the 2013 flood which hit High River particularly hard, Samaritan’s Purse had volunteer crews heading south on a regular basis to help with cleanup. The Red Cross, which had collected a boatload of money from people who assumed their donations would go to immediate help for those displaced by the flood, decided in its wisdom that said funds would be better used for longer-term aid.
