      But if your analogy is referring to Jill Biden and her influence, then I’d agree. Diana Fox Carney is Carney’s wife and is a real left wing nut job. She used to (still does?), work for Eurasia Group, which was founded by Ian Bremmer. Gerald Butts also works for Eurasia.

  15. I’ve often thought that Freeland would be the better choice. She’s fluently bilingual and currently has a seat in the House of Commons. I find it odd that Carney is being catapulted into the position like this. Some days it seems like he’s doing it unwillingly. Is he compromised in some way and subject to blackmail?

  16. My understanding is that Carney’s french is not great. That’s going to be a big handicap in an election here. He can’t run from the French media forever. It’s very odd that he’s never engaged with them. A conservative that could not speak passable french would be pilloried in the media.

    2. I do not give a damn about the french minority. That tail has been wagging the dog all my life and I like many others are sick of it. To hell with the media, they are perpetual liars. Give the french a translation app on their I phones.

  17. It reminds me a bit of when Biden withdrew and Harris became the candidate. Harris got a quick bump, but the more people saw of her, the less they liked. And so it may be for Carney. I can’t imagine Canadians were impressed by that goalie photo op.

    So I expect his handlers to try to limit his exposure, sticking to scripted events and limited interaction with selected media, as much as possible. If March brings a vote of no confidence, then a short campaign would also limit his exposure. If he does a deal with Mr Singh, it would be a lot harder to hide for six months. (Of course, you could also declare the national emergency means you can’t have the election on time.)

    Trudeau is very good at wedge politics and could turn that to his advantage. String things along for a few months, present himself as Canada’s champion, then do a deal right before the election and declare that he’s saved Canada. Carney doesn’t seem to have those political chops, and even if Trudeau is whispering in his ear I’m not sure he could do it credibly. Not that you have to be credible when it comes to the Canadian media.

    Meanwhile Poilievre is in tough. He’s not Prime Minister, so he can’t negotiate with the Americans. He can’t even know what the Americans have actually said to the Canadian government. The Liberals are in the driver’s seat: they can set the agenda, and they have an information advantage. Worse, Poilievre can be tarred as Canada’s Trump because “right wing” and because he says he wants to fix stuff. Perhaps his strategy will be to assist Carney in exposing himself as quickly as possible, but he may have a short window to work with.

    I blame Singh for much of this. If he’d said “enough” even a few days earlier the Liberal government would have fallen. But nope.

  18. Carney isn’t running against anybody but Trump. That’s the librano strategy. Oh sure they’ll slag PP and Alberta when the moment is appropriate but he’s got Trump in the cross hairs. He will try and whip up the anti American sentiment the libranos love so well.
