  1. I was going to post this but Francisco beat me to it. Peavy was a Western-based retail company focusing on agricultural products, hardware and home furnishings. Another victory for Trudeau and Gruber.

  2. I like shopping at Peavey Mart. Unfortunately, they’re caught in a vise between rising financing costs and a tapped out marginal consumer. For years I’ve been expecting the steep jump in interest rates to bite. Here’s more evidence that it definitely has.

  3. I read the article but other than authentic corporate gibberish like “organizational restructuring aimed at stabilizing the business and positioning it for future growth”, there is no mention of the Why of it all. Perhaps it is just Bad Luck(tm).

  4. My wife and I shop at Peavey quite a bit so this is not good news. I think this is fallout from the lockdowns then hyper inflation and finally high interest rates to cure the hyper inflation. So most of the blame is on the federal lieberals. They will be missed. I hope that Rural King or Bomgars comes to replace them but the business environment in canuckistan is so toxic right now.

  5. Here in Ontario TSC had so poisoned the brand that clientele were driven away. With fewer rural customers the suburban market was the target. Just a generalized observation for our area.

    1. Agreed. It never really seemed to know what it wanted to be.

Still, that sucks. I was in the Guelph one every couple of months.

    2. Amen. The management at the Cornwall TSC was pathetic. The first time I went in it was for 2 x 5 gal pails of hydraulic oil advertised 2/$99. “That means If you buy 2, you get them for $99 each” said the floor manager. My buddy showed her on his phone that Walmart and CTC had similar products for $50 to $55 per pail but there was no reasoning with her. So we walked out.

The next time I went in was because of a flyer announcing a Thursday to Sunday weekend madness sale. I picked up over $300 of stuff and when I got to the cash the girl rang up all the stuff and gave me the whopping total … at pre-sale prices. When I protested, she pointed to the fine print at the bottom of the last page: “Sale starts 6pm Thursday.” It was 2:30. I told the cashier that I lived 40 minutes away, and I wasn’t going to make a trip back. Call the manager. The same genius showed up again. “If I gave you the sale price, I’d have to do it for everyone.” It was like that old Lay’s potato chip ad with the two Eskimoes sitting all alone. There were only the 3 of us there. I left all the crap on the counter and walked out. Never went back. The absolute stupidest store I’ve ever been in.

  6. “We have to STOP our consumer society! The West consumes 80% of the world’s resources with only 15% of the world’s (mostly white) population!”

Yes, this is what all my highly educated, really, really, smart high tech people say. Ohhhhhhhhh mommmaaaa … they say, we MUST DESTROY capitalism! Capitalism is greed. Capitalism is evil. They actually think all the stores going out of business is great! Now, if they can only destroy Amazon …

  7. L- Is this shutdown, at least a significant contributing factor, due to the
Panic-Demic/Lockdowns? Small and medium sized businesses go down first and the larger
ones can finance until an expected quick recovery. The Trudeau Liberal policies have been
nihilist, aimed to destroy this nation-state, one from which there is no recovery.

Another reason we’re not allowed a full public discussion about 2020-2023.

  8. Peavey has poor CS, and that drives people away. Bell lost about 40,000 customers in 2 years because of poor CS, in early 00’s. but they are big enough to weather such a storm, Peavey is not.

  9. That sucks. Growing up on a farm north of Listowel, we always had the TSC. When they sold to private equity and expanded into the old Co-op locations across the province, I was hopeful. It was worth the drive to Arnprior or Kemptville for stuff only they had.
