1. Going to need a bigger icebreaker.
   Next question is why is that ship out there in the first place.

2. Is it common for ships to be shipping in the Great Lakes in January?

   1. No. The Welland Canal was closed December 26, and all ships had to be clear of Montreal-Lake Ontario by January 5, and the Welland Canal by January 10. There is no winter clearance of shipping lanes by icebreaker during winter months.

3. Ice breakers can’t handle a couple feet of lake ice? Tell me this isn’t one of Justin’s billion dollar ships. More cash pissed away.

      The above article suggests that some lake freighters navigate the lakes in January. Apparently Manitoulin can handle ice normally found in Erie, but this year the ice near shore was thicker than normal.

      2. Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes. It normally get a lot of ice cover, but right now has more that 80% ice coverage, which never happens this early in winter.

6. Interesting that the Montreal to Lake Ontario locks close January 5th, The Welland Canal closes January 10th, and the Sault Ste Marie locks close January 15th.

   Used to be earlier.

   They won’t be able to get a bigger ice breaker to Lake Erie now.

7. my uncle was captain of a laker , his career changed in the 70s when icebreakers kept the lakes open for the whole year.

    It was built in China. Out of used PIECES. The stern of an old vessel and forebody and bow made out of pure chinesium.
