      2. I’ve never subscribed to the idea that Trump is playing 7-dimensional chess.

        I suspect he’ll come back to the idea of tariffs, but only after some experts have determined what industries can be safely targeted. A tariff on Canadian oil, for example, would mean more exports from outside of North America both in the near and long term, which is not in America’s best interest. Instead Trump should do the opposite by reviving the Keystone pipeline.

          With a fed admin helping instead of hindering the energy sector, they could make up the Canadian import share very quickly.

          1. Tariffs are a leverage negotiating point to be used at a later date in negotiating mutually beneficial trade agreements. There is always the “Sword of Damocles” should that fail.

      3. Fred, exactly so. This is the usual negotiating strategy. It’s not aimed at the Liberals; it’s aimed at Canada’s next Prime Minister and government-in-waiting. As roaddog rightly noted, this is about keeping the other side off balance. Washington has no intention of wasting time negotiating with Justatwit. He’s yesterday’s news. DJT is simply waiting until the CPC has tossed out the Liberals in the next election this year.

            I also explained above why it probably won’t happen — namely, causing a recession is a poor way to endear yourself to the American public.

            But Trump might have considered it for a while as a way to annex part or all of Canada. He may have had dreams of American expansionism through a war not of bullets but tariffs.

    1. The Swiss are like that as well. You have to know them for at least 7 years before they will invite you over for dinner. I was told this by an ex-pat American in Geneva which I visited in 1977. Geneva was the headquarters for many American companies in Europe. The Americans found the Swiss to be very “stand-offish”.

On inauguration day 2021, after the Trumps landed in Florida, the cameras were watching as they got off the plane. Melania gave this death glare to the press that had more than a hint of, “And now I never need to deal with the likes of you again,” about it.

      Her hat was an interesting wardrobe choice in that it served to conceal her eyes much of the time. Probably more than a few of those death glares going out to deserving recipients today. She’s already announced she’ll be downsizing the office of First Lady; I suspect she’ll keep a fairly low profile this time around, at least by modern First Lady standards.

    2. The TikTok ban was pure U.S. government control/censorship. They were still really pissed that lost control of X. TikTok is not owned by the Chinese government. Sen. Rand Paul on this issue. He’s clearly right. Elon Musk also agrees that TikTok should not have been censored, even while admitting that it’s to his and X’s advantage that it was/if it were.

        1. It can potentially harvest location data. Good idea to ban it for gov’t employees and contractors, at least higher level ones.
          You’d be surprised what intelligence you can get from knowing the locations of people, knowing when a bunch of gov’t employees congregate somewhere, who moves across the country and to where to when something happens, etc.
          As to regular citizens, it should be their choice.
