  3. Better late than never. But it is odd (or maybe not so odd) that the timing to remove the censorship of criticism against the government and its policies occurs as Trump (and the Rep.) takes over, compared to when Biden (and the Dems) takes over.

      They’re NOT. They never will be. I live here. I KNOW the people who work for Meta, and they’d all QUIT if Meta stopped being hardcore leftist. Nothing will change.   10. While it’s probably good news I can’t see it as being as dramatic a change as what’s happened since Elon bought X/Twitter..
    Seeing Dana White on their board is a surprise, his loyalty to Trump is well documented, it goes back to White’s earliest days in the fighting game and it’s well above any loyalty he’ll have for Meta.
    As well, I sell a lot of crap on FB Marketplace which I’ve found quite useful. My hits on FBMP are at more than 10:1 above kijiji etc … and craigslist isn’t a thing in this area, so on FB I’m almost silent for anything political as it’s more valuable to me as a sales tool. It’s never going to be free to comment on politically like other platforms, for exactly the reasons as posted above.

    Perhaps the new Conservative gov’t will get out of the news game with the tax credits and prohibition on posting news events on some social medias?

    1. Exactly. Fortunately there are X number of other social platforms to say how outrageous it is to __________ .

      As a sales platform it’s fine, I know of a few vendors who only sell on Instagram too but we don’t pretend it’s a “social platform”. There was a saying about people who like to wrestle, and pigs, which may apply here.
      It seems easier to not pretend that FB is going to be “free to comment whatever” and even less likely for me to post a teak table or semi used plumbing tools for sale here at SDA.

      Also, I haven’t seen any actual Nazis on FB though helmets with “SS” on the sides are up for sale every now and again. FB is more like Craigslist now than anything, but with an expanded “rage” section.

      1. Imagine an unknown commenter thinking I’m on drugs, “again” … as I recognise the FB platform for what it is, a sales forum, privately owned, with special emphasis on photos of cats.
        It’s clearly not for free speech, fortunately most others already know this, and where to turn to for politically motivated posts and commentary

  13. Does anyone still use Facebook/Meta? Most of the people I know who were heavy Facebook users are now off the platform entirely. I would love to know how many are actually on it. Zuck sucks.

    2. I do. And many dozens of people I know do. It’s the only way a lot of us can have regular contact, or much contact at all, with far-flung family or friends. Also, for various organizations (churches, animal rescue, other specific interests, etc.). Virtually none of my FB “friends” ever post political content, and I certainly don’t. There are other places for that. I think Zuk is a jerk, and far worse, but FB serves a useful purpose. Gab might be an alternative, and I’d much prefer it (I like Andrew Torba) but it would be very difficult to get all the FB people I have contact with to go to Gab. Many do know anything about it.

  14. Facebook is full of fake stuff that is fake for the sake of being fake. I’m not talking political stuff. It’s purported archaeology, nature, or similar videos that are fake. Also self help videos that solve nothing and similar things. It’s annoying but the solution is people calling it out rather than stepping the goose.

  15. Facebook carries ads for indian cigarettes but doesn’t allow FB users to share news stories. Zuckerberg knows it’s illegal to advertise tobacco in Canada, right?
