The Sound Of Settled Science

Two hours.

From the tribe of 1k-10k modern humans who killed off all the other human species 70,000 years ago, to the Yamnaya steppe nomads 5,000 who killed off 90+% of (then) Europeans and also destroyed the Indus Valley Civilization.

So much of what we thought we knew about human history is turning out to be wrong, from the ‘Out of Africa’ theory to the evolution of language, and this is all thanks to the research from David Reich’s lab.

  1. If you’re interested in this kind of stuff the last few years have been fascinating. When I took my anthropology elective years ago everything was simple. It was well known that the brutish Neanderthals of Europe, who some speculated couldn’t even speak, were overwhelmed by the crafty Cro-Magnons who suddenly spring forth in the archeological record. After that the Stone Age inhabitants of Europe via peaceful demic diffusion learned farming and became Neolithic farmers and then eventually learned about the horse and the wheel. Slowly modern Europe came into view and as we know, along with that came strife and wars. Nevertheless the idea was that the Cro Magnons were the ancestors of modern Europeans and that Europeans hadn’t moved an inch in 30,000 years.

Fast forward to modern DNA methods and we learn some new facts. Neanderthals live on in the DNA of all non Africans. New DNA analysis shows that Stone Age Europe’s hunter gatherers likely were replaced by Neolithic Farmers from the middle east, who were in turn replaced by Yamnaya Steppe Herders. By replacement we actually mean that 90% of males seem to have vanished although autosomal DNA remains. I could go on but I don’t want to clog up the comments too badly.

      1. Paul – that was an interesting video by Dan Davis. He mentions that Yamnaya Y-DNA R1b makes it’s way into Europe and he also mentions R1a which originated in the Steppe-Forest zone. What he didn’t mention is that R1a is now the most common Y-DNA in all of Europe which is quite amazing. Also of interest is the fact that R1a is the most common Y-DNA in Native Americans although it is claimed this is post Columbian. The study of ancient DNA has really overturned many conventional ideas that were considered settled science.

  2. Yamnaya:

First people riding horses, had the wheel and wagons, had domesticated animals, metallurgy, superior weapons and were tough as nails as they had high protein diets. They took over much of Europe.

So, when some “Native American” or “First Nation” whiner complains about “colonialization” just tell them that is the way of the world from time immemorial and get with the program.

Humans: Innovating, wandering and then taking over – it’s what we do.

It ain’t gonna stop. Mars is next

  3. The Black Death caused inflation? I don’t think these guys understand what inflation is (thanks to modern economists). There was an increase in labor costs because of the reduction in the number of people, but this was just from supply and demand, not inflation.
