  1. Rule 1. Never build on a cornfield. You never know what’s going to be there in a few years.

Rule 2. Never pay 100% up front. Withold the most you can as leverage for job completion.

That said, I don’t know how it all works in China, but whatever it was they did, it didn’t work out for those buyers left holding the bag.

    1. the issue in Chirer theres always sumbuddy in the CCP also in the corporation.
let’s say a silent palm to grease. soooo the bag holding which must, must be done somewhere stays in the hands of the homeowner wannabes.
the silent partner is never revealed.
in the absence of rule of law.
thus Chirese communism is the ultimate final end of the line regarding evolution of that ideology.
congrats Karl, ya did it, ya brought us all back together in a morasse involving unfettered greed mixed with billions in euros, dollars, yuan, take you pick. we’se be full circle as it were.
did anyone consult mao on this?

  2. I remember back in the early 2000’s when I first saw these ghost cities popping up. No one knew what they were for, or why they were there.

  3. l saw hints of this in the Chirese mindset on a visit to HK 1988.
it was explained to me a partially finished skyscraper was demolished to make way for a bigger one.
pretty much unrestrained development, seeking the last marginal gain regardless of the pathway.

2017 article…. They came, they built on prime agricultural land. We have more generous banking rules, but still NO property ownership enshrined in legislation. Diefenbaker tried hard in his time.

Match-matchy over-sized homes on small land parcels have been sold in Canadian and US suburbs for years! Usually, though, owners landscape, maybe renovate and paint them differently, such that the sameness is less glaring.

I am concerned about “purpose-built” rental high rises. Future slum dwellings?

  5. “International investment” says it all.

Few at the top taking in the money, f**k everyone else.

  6. We now know where to send the homeless and welfare immigrants. The house shells are there and with the expertise that we have been told these immigrants possess it should be a piece of cake. A win win as it were.

  7. Contrary to popular belief, I did not make huge amounts of money in the design/construction industry. But because of my design knowledge and learning construction skills, I made money buying houses which had not been loved, fixing them up (and NEVER fixing them up more than the neighborhood would support), enjoying them and then selling them for a profit. I have always been “leery” of buying new construction because of too many stories in which the developer made off like a bandit as well as the new lot sizes are less than those from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Starting in the 1980’s, large houses were crowded together and there were no back lanes, so your first impression was that of “welcome to my big garage door”!
The real estate game has always been ‘Cavaet Emptor”
