Danielle Smith

Danielle Smith goes all-in on revitalized sovereign wealth fund for Alberta. Saskatchewan had one, once, but that was 32 years ago. Details in story.

  1. She’s cancelling income tax cuts in order to divert funding to this collectivist slush fund. Why do we continue to elect conservatives who engage in such anti-conservative antics?

    1. One needs money to fight the federal communists in charge, and the local communists not far away, especially if they want to cut off your main income generator, oil and gas.

    2. Because conservative-minded citizens have to be fooled into believing that there are politicians who represent them. This is one such method of accomplishing that deception.

The “conservative” gov’t will maintain the high levels of taxation (bad) in exchange for the promise of building up a fund (not conservative, nor something a gov’t should do) which on the surface appears positive, if only when weighed against what the opposition would do.

Of course when the commies are re-(s)elected, they’ll then spend all the “savings” on public-sector unions and other forms of waste. The end result being that nothing conservative was accomplished at all.

But the fake-conservatives have to appear to do something over their 4 years of planned ineptness.

        1. If one believes that they will be recipients of those proceeds when it rains, yes.

          But they won’t.

And it is not for a gov’t to do so – rather they should be returning to Albertans any surpluses immediately. Then THEY can save for a rainy day.

And the gov’t should not be run as a business. They should simply manage the few tasks gov’t was originally created to manage, and that’s all. They should not manage funds. They should not subsidize businesses. They should not pick winners and losers. They should not have anything to do with public sector unions. Etc.

They should only manage roads, inter-provincial trade, manage regulatory boards, etc. And even much within that narrow mandate is arguable.

  2. Problem is they’ll just turn around and spend it. I recall Saskatchewan just giving everyone a grant in the thousands to add renovations to their home. My brother-in-law was gloating with glee as his used his giveaway to pout a new deck and hot tub on his house.

    1. No more than it costs now. We are already paying the FULL cost of the RCMP including what the feds are “paying” with out taxes. And at least we will control it.

    2. Jamie

      WHATEVER IT TAKES.

We do not require a security agency that is only accountable to the PMO snoopin around the province & spying on Albertans.

I have not forgotten the High River Theft…Nor the Convoy.

  3. Taking over the money is HUGE. It will weaken the FEDS. Change the balance of power. Good luck Alberta. Keep those orange communists at bay. The next step would be to refuse to take part in the provincial transfer program. Then get out of the fossil fuel shut-down program – I mean climate change.

  4. Politicians should never have a sovereign fund to use as they please. It just makes them more unaccountable than they already are.

Continued diversion of the wealth of Alberta to government control further limits the needed build up of wealth in private hands that would truly create the capital formation needed for diversification of the economy.

  5. “ The next step would be to refuse to take part in the provincial transfer program.”

Equalization” or inter provincial socialism is entrenched in the constitution.
So not taking part is not possible short of a unilateral declaration of independence.
You see it’s up to Ontario and Quebec to decide if they want to stop the raping and pillaging.

You can thank Peter Laugheed and Alan Blakney for this our predicament.

  6. One should be asking why the Alberta Heritage Fund isn’t worth $250 billion today, and then explain how they intend it to be different this time.

Once that’s done, everyone should tell them they don’t believe the explanation, and the money should be going to pay down the debt or back to taxpayers

  7. I’d like to see some hard core cuts in the budget.

Smith governs like she has a minority government.

  8. I like the idea of a renewed Sovereignty fund —-For every Western Province, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta!
I would like to get our Constitutional Lawyers looking at ways to get out of paying Equalization payments ( which primarily go to Quebec )
And a must use the “Clarity Act” to permanently leave Canada !!
    British Columbia could join!
