A Tidy Profit

Lawyer math.

A former University of Manitoba law dean has been given “the ultimate penalty” of disbarment in Manitoba after he misspent over half a million dollars in school funds, including racking up charges that amount to fraud, the provincial law society says.

Jonathan Black-Branch has been disbarred and his name has been removed from the Law Society of Manitoba’s rolls of barristers and solicitors, according to a Feb. 14 decision from a law society disciplinary committee.

He also was fined $36,000.

  1. The turk who wrote this expose on Mr. Black-Branch doesn’t seem to like him very much.

Is Mr. Black-Branch jewish? There doesn’t seem to be too much online about his past

Imagine if the CBC wrote about the #Libranos like this! They’d never get their bonus’ …

    1. I know, eh?

Bet he now wishes he’d gone into ArriveScamming instead of law. Bloody amateur.

  2. Justin Trudeau may appoint him as a judge.

He’s eminently qualified to oversee judicial proceedings (exonerations) of Liberals.

    Sarc
    But probability happening is high

  3. Lawyer math? How about Lawyer LANGUAGE!? He “misspent” $500k? “misspent”? Try “embezzled” or “stolen” … “theft” …

I guess it’s hard to define what is … is … when it’s contained in the word misspent

    1. The surprise is that The Law Society of Manitoba took any action at all, foxes looking after the hen house etc.
Is there a separate charge from the Crown ? One only hopes CRA will rattle his dumb ass for the next 36 months and how about his lunch mates getting questioned over a lunch lol.
Another good line is that his peers were surprised ? The guys rolling around on what appears to be a $10 K a month ” expense ” account like the Duke of Moose Jaw .
Should spend time in Stony Mtn for his double duplicity of the law and public funds in trust but wont.

  4. Well, I found his resume, and he did get around a lot internationally, after Manitoba, New Brunswick and Toronto etc. Childhood unknown ….

His reputation is somewhat in shambles, but he quickly escaped to the UK, and will be barely punished for his crimes. He is now about 60, and likely has a job, lots of stashed cash (off-shore and elsewhere), book sales, companies and likely pensions from both Canada and the UK.

Was he an understudy of Maurice Strong, a fellow Manitoban with English roots, who also liked the energy industry and had the same slick ego and slimy ethical frame-of-mind? Did they hang out at the Manitoba Club?

  5. Discovered in 2020 but the CBC reports it 4 years later, that’s not news it’s a cover-up. U of M initially chose not to pursue legal action (stealing tax-payers dollars) and reimbursed the money themselves (stealing more tax-payer dollars?) so they’re not even attempting to get the money back. Seems the U of M didn’t want to upset Jonathan for some reason.
