  1. the vast majority of packages of bacon went from 454/500g to 325 g but the price didn’t change.

I wonder if stats can didn’t bother updating the size of the package when the package size changed, and how many other items this happened for…

Statscan also changes the makeup of their “basket of goods” but still publish the data as if it’s the same

    1. JD – I’ve been asking for a year or two how could the annually adjusted inflation rate only be 8% when the average price of a five pound bag of apples at the Superstore went from $5.99 to $9.00. For those who graduated from non-STEM programs, that’s 50%. Maybe apples have unique economics or maybe, just a conspiracy here, the MSM is giving the natural governing party a soft landing.

      1. not everyone buys apples, so when there is a sudden spike, maybe it falls out of the “basket of goods”

        1. JD – it’s been at the higher price for over a year. Beef has seen a similar increase in price, except maybe hamburger. Farmed Salmon hasn’t increased so much…

      2. Frozen vegetables….California blend….still 2 kg bags but the price jumped from $3.99 to over $6 in a few years.

That and the price of lean meat jumped from $2 to $4 a pound.

Ooohhh….Superstore…fancy. We have a NoFrills with some pretty cashiers.

        1. My wife started checking PC frozen raspberries and discovered they are produced in Ukraine, Chile, and the USA. One week the freezer will be filled with packages from Chile, another week Ukraine, etc.

  2. Silly, silly, Food Professor!

As if it’s a reporter’s job to question and verify.

  3. The head of statscan resigned in 2016 because the agency is no longer an independent agency and he had data privacy concerns. Perhaps the food inflation discrepancy is because StatsCan gives the narrative and nimbers the Trudeau Liberal-NDP government wants it to produce.

“In an interview with CBC News, Canada’s former chief statistician says he’s at peace with his decision to quit over the federal government’s troubled tech support agency, Shared Services Canada, which he says has compromised Statistics Canada’s independence. ”

  4. Silly Food Processor..Reporters? Doing maths?
    And Stats Canada numbers?
Ain’t worth the effort to read them, for they are lies.
When you know they always lie, what is the point of deciphering their imaginary data?
The real information is that they are another useless government agency.
    Proven useless.
Imagine if Stats Canada produced an accurate picture of Canada as it was…Real solid data..It would still be useless to us tax payers.Look who they supply this “data” to.

  5. Most criminal enterprises keep two sets of books. You’re just not supposed to find out about the real set.

This demonstrates that a federal election puts about 337 MP seats and their staff positions up for grabs but the government departments below have a thousand times more employees who remain in place, election after election, and there are also government dependent businesses.

  6. I have a jpg of a Dominion Stores flyer from 1951 from stores near where I live in Hamilton, Ontario. The stores no longer exist as grocery stores but both were small,
about the size of convenience stores.

The Statistics Canada CPI-Food increase from 1951 to 2023 is about 14 times.
I put current prices beside the 1951 prices and the increases are about
25 to 30 times. The only exceptions are sugar and Miracle Whip, which are
factory foods which benefit from improvements to industrial processes.

    Samples: 1951 2023 multiple

    Butter – pound .29 6.99 24
    Flour – 5 pounds .25 5.00 20
    Sugar – 5 pounds .31 3.00 10
    Miracle Whip – 30? ounces .49 5.00 10
    Steak, round – pound .21 7.00 33
    Lettuce – head .05 3.00 60

If you back out the difference it is about 1% per year for the whole time or
about 2% if the period is from about 1986 only. That is, if the official CPI
is 4% this year then the real one is 6%.

    1. Inflation is running close to 20% right now. The fact that gas is sort of stable in no way verifies any government position. We know what our wallets and bank accounts are saying. 6%, hell, I wish it was that low.

  7. Inflate the currency, tax to max, and then bitch about costs. You all know what I think about people that think like that.

  8. If you’re looking for honesty from your government, then you’ve already drank the Kool Aid.
The MSM are drunk on it.

  9. Bacon is the one thing that hasn’t exploded in cost. I’m in the GTA and I can still find some for $2.99 for 375g. Even imported from the US, Sugardale and Daily’s.

    1. Must be the number of muslims keeping demand low, becaus eup here in Ottawa, it’s at least doubled in price.

  10. Sorry, does anyone take Stats Can, AKA Government, numbers seriously. They lie.

Great theme title, by the way.
