Geez, wonder who the federal government likes best? Federal government gives $86 million to convert Newfoundland oil refinery to biofuel.
And you know it likes Newfoundland because when they wanted to open up a major new oilfield, the federal Liberal government bit their tongue and said, “Sure!”
But now Newfoundland will also got a taste of what Alberta usually chews on – delays on energy projects. The Bay du Nord sailed through federal approvals (sailed – see what I did there?) , only to find out that Norwegian proponent Equinor is going to delay it three years. Didn’t they know the federal government is supposed to delay oil projects three years, not the oil company?
Biofuel? Doesn’t biofuel consume more fossil fuel than it replaces? If you farmed with biofuel with zero fossil fuel input you would eventually be out of business for lack of fuel. Biofuel is a big industrial circle jerk.
Add ethanol to the circle jerk
Yes that is what they do at come by chance.
L – VOWG, Definitely, one of our best retorts!
Newfoundland was iffy about joining Canada and losing their autonomy,
their sovereignty and, as night follows day, their cod fishery. That skepticism
proved prophetic. If they’d stayed independent, at least, they’d have put up a
fight and defended their inheritance.
If Newfoundland did a “Wexit”. It would truly live up to it’s name.
Eventually, the Liberals would be left with Quebec, the GTA and Vancouver.
And aren’t the gang greens trying to put farming out of business?
No more major o&g development will take place in Canada. Even with approval, the investment climate is too risky. I suspect that in the end Equinor will run out the clock and walk away.
The third world and the dictators will supply oil to the world over the next while. Only an oil shock bigger than the one Ukraine/Russia produced will (might?) bring the free world to it’s senses.
Sierra Club Canada said the latest news shows Newfoundland and Labrador must wean itself off revenues from offshore oil.
Yeah, sure. Nothing screams budget surplus quite like whale tours.
“The Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson, and Minister of Labour Seamus O’Regan, on behalf of Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry François-Philippe Champagne, announced up to $86 million in federal investments, subject to final negotiations, to convert the oil refinery in Come By Chance, Newfoundland and Labrador, into a “world-class renewable diesel facility that will create hundreds of middle-class jobs, grow the economy and help power the province’s low-carbon future,” according to a Government of Canada release.”
So the plan is to convert it from refining crude oil, which it did expensively, and thus was shuttered when the market collapsed, and previously employed 400 people, to spend $86 million, to give to it’s owners, a US private equity fund, to create 200 jobs, in converting it into a biofuel facility.
What is the return on “investment” that the government expects? How long is the payback on that “investment”?
How much ongoing government support will be required to keep it running, given that it previously was expensive to operate using a cheap source of feedstocks, and the plan is to use a more expensive feedstock
Edit: even Irving oil couldn’t make it work –

I like Trudeau’s plan to put a diesel engine in the base of all the huge windmills to keep those blades turning even when the wind is not blowing.
Think of all the jobs that will be created to deliver the diesel fuel to each windmill … mostly by helicopter as most are not located in very accessible sites.
Elon Musk is developing electric helicopters … so they can be used to cut down on fuel consumption.
And that is how stupid I think this entire climate scam has become.
having a refinery that is far from source or market never made any sense .
unless they are processing fish guts this wont work either .
is it still owned by the koreans.??
I first misread the headline as Gov gives eighty six mil to convert refinery into a brothel.
Hey, such isn’t unlikely these days.
The Norwegians are just waiting for the next election.
They want to see some abatement in the Green agenda of the Canadian government.
They are aware that there is “no business case” for fossil fuel extraction and distribution in Canada under this government.
rroe – don’t know if you remember when Harper was PM and named Rona Ambrose his environment minister? She was chased out by the bureaucrats after 6 months in office! If I recall she was charged with allowing more development.
If the government changes, the first thing to happen must be gutting the bureaucracy!
Things may then be allowed to proceed.
Watch the heads explode, when a bunch of Newf’s figures out that seal fat and whale blubber is loaded with Bio Fuel.
Ha ha..
Mammal Fat.
And the bureaucrats are so thick,we could get a Government Gang Green Grant to convert Mammal fat to biodiesel…And they would be promoting this spending all over their fawning media…
Until they learn..they are the mammals.
So the refinery will ship in vast quantities of canola, something which is not even grown in Newfoundland?
Or will they make it out of cod liver oil?
Bio fuel. Yes everyone really is stupid, as the rock has a sh*t load of real oil there. Maybe come by chance will produce that special oil.
As a newf – currently working for a whale tour outfit – I will point out that, despite my best efforts, the NL govt is liberal and is, as such, functionally retarded. The federal govt is paying lip service to developing NL oil while pumping useless “green energy development” money into the current energy black hole that is renewable. All are complicit and cashing their cheques before the whole grift comes crashing down when the lights finally go out.
Food for fuel is simply grossly unethical.
Removing more food from the global supply chain to add to your tank drives prices up for food or silage and therefore causes starvation somewhere else where they can’t afford the higher prices.
Adding ethanol to your tank shortens your engine life, causing earlier vehicle replacement, causing increased demand on mining, shipping, supply chains, etc. Changes to the fuel standard accelerate that replacement. You will be pressured to replace your busted internal combustion car with the good ol’ battery operated golf cart with made-in-Ontario subsidized batteries.
Everyone’s a winner except when no one is.
That makes as much sense as using wind farms to generate Hydrogen for the export market. It involves using 47kwh to produce each kg of Hydrogen through hydrolysis which contains 36kwh of energy before even thinking about storage, transportation, freezing for liquifying (adding a few more kwh per kg). Trudeau / Guilbeault math.
The ROI is simply not there for BioFuels.
Proven many many moons ago by Capt. IKE KEIFER USN….Who was tasked with exploring the possibiity of the entire US Navy converting to bio fuels
Maybe they could use the cucumbers from the greenhouses they subsidized and it can be twice the boondogle. Of course Trudeaus butt buddy Seamus can take credit when hes sober.
“Didn’t they know the federal government is supposed to delay oil projects three years, not the oil company?”
You can bet your bippy the delay will be a LOT longer than three years. No serious company is prepared to endure the quagmire called Canada.
Biofuels are ridiculous. Same for hydrogen. And when you burn them in a 78% oxygen environment you still get NOx. And with biofuels you get that AND CO2. But I like CO2. NOx is definitely nasty in high quantities
I will continue to burn diesel on my operation even though the cost is too high.
And I will continue to add solar as I typically add a few panels every year. By the time I’ve got enough panels and my equipment is worn out there will be reasonably priced electric tractors I can afford. God I hope so My dream is to generate my own “fuel” on farm and get off this stupid input cost treadmill. But it’s like threading a damned needle this business.
