Pretty much anything with a rechargeable battery in it these days, from a cellphone to an electric vehicle, uses lithium (except for the lead-acid battery in your conventional car or truck). As the lightest metal, there’s no beating the periodic table.
It turns out, Saskatchewan has lithium beneath its southern soil. And now five companies are in a race to explore it, develop it, commercialize it bring it to market.
Pipeline Online just launched an in-depth series on what’s happening in Saskatchewan, a series over a year in the making. You can read Part 1, the introduction, and Part 2, recently released Saskatchewan incentives.
It’s the birth of an entirely new industry for this province, one that, if it pans out, could be worth many billions. And it’s all being done with oilfield companies and workers, as seen above.
Well, my lithium battery powered framing nailer stops working outside at minus 15 after 20 minutes. Either the nailer stiffens up from the cold, or the battery loses adequate power to drive the nailer. Probably both.
How do they keep the battery’s in an EV warm in winter?
They cannibalize themselves by sucking juice to keep warm.
The hybrids are better as they use the heat from the small gas engine and store the heated coolant in a thermos for later use to keep the battery warm.
I designed a piece of automotive electronics and I had to keep asking the customer if they wanted it to work in Winnipeg. Standing outside overnight in -40C and work on start is a challenge.
Nobody wants to work in Winnipeg when it’s that cold
We’re giving up proven systems and putting our faith in fantasy contraptions.
But, But Remember remember lithium will give MINOR children MINING jobs somewhere in the world. Why should they play when they can work in a cave all day?
UnMe’s wet dream of capitalism: for everyone, everywhere, all the time.
Worth many billions…..
Much that will be transferred to Quebec no doubt.
Being the second largest country in the world with all types of rock formation, I would be surprised if it didn’t have all types of elements in it somewehere. Unfortunately we have the most stupid, anti-resource, anti-industry, government in the world.
The most anti-industry government? Joe Biden says, “Hold my beer.”
If you think the watermelons are going to let you get away with raping Mother Earth for lithium, you’d better think again. Unicorn farts are the only way to go as they’re environmentally friendly, sustainable, and completely free.
The WEF expects to run out of battery components (cobal, lithium) in about 10 years. Let’s say you have 20 years of lithium buried. What then? Are you going to be left with nothing but a huge hole in the ground?
And what energy are you going to use to mine the lithium? I doubt if a windmill or solar panel will be enough.
Ha ha …. a huge hole left in the ground …. someone didn’t read any of the info on Saskatchewan lithium.
I admit, I didn’t. So educate me. Where is this lithium going to come from? The photo gives the impression that you’re going to dig for it, but I’m no expert, so please… do tell! I’m anxious to learn from an expert.
I didn’t know that asking questions could be so entertaining. And speaking of questions, what about my second question? Any suggestions there?
i think its mostly contained in the salt water from the watered out oilfields. a lot of water movement for little product .
The future is oil and gas. It just won’t be here, it’ll be in the Middle East, Russia and South America. Our governments are killing our prosperity and way of life at the behest of environmental ignoramuses.

I think Saskatchewan just needs a couple thousand more bird mills to have a modern, balanced, 21st century economy.
Great pic!!! Dang!! Not used to seeing skies that blue. In ontario that’s known as a meteorological oddity. And my Sask. cousin was right about the dog running away from home and still being able to see it three days later.
It’s there, on the horizon. See it?
It’s called a Natural Gas sky in Alberta

Yah, a 3 legged dog is that slow!
I think there’s already massive widespread lithium groundwater contamination in Canada. People in Canada seem to be unusually compliant and unable to stand up for themselves, must be consuming large amounts of it.
What’s a little more?
L – A dawn of Lithium industry as opposed to a sunset of political lethargy.
Joe Biden has woke up and decided lithium and the rare earth metals are important.
Very important. He want’s a guaranteed supply for America.
It’s one small step marking the end of the globalization scam. Resources are going to be owned by nationals and critical manufacturing is coming home.
Globalization like neo liberalism and climate change have passed their best before date.
