Globe and Mail- Loblaw puts self-driving delivery trucks on Canadian roads for first time

The driverless vehicle is one of five that Canada’s largest grocer has on the roads across Toronto and surrounding suburbs, delivering products to its stores. In partnership with Palo Alto, Calif.-based startup Gatik, Loblaw has been testing the autonomous driving technology in Ontario since 2020, with a human “safety driver” on board. In August, the company began the next phase of its test – without the driver.

  1. If you’ve ever been in downtown Toronto, you know how poor the cell reception is given all the high buildings. But I’m sure they have it figured out by now.

    1. Just a matter of intercepting it’s computer programming signal…and Bob’s you’re Uncle…mine…mine…MINE!
Reprogramming it for a possible Bank run too…those pesky cash machines…Coke machines…oh oh…cops…

I think I’m inheriting a little of the crazy.

    2. Like most “nice” things in Toronto this too will be stollen and either stripped for parts or dumped in the lake or a river. If nothing else I will expect some Juvenile adults looking to target these vehicles to either try and run them off the road, or to purposely get hit for the chance at a hefty insurance payout.
Would love to know how the “testing” went in the snow with ice, and drifts, and plows, and vehicles spinning out across the lanes.

    3. My thoughts exactly! All executives on the Board and in the transportation department trying this out should be fired for blatant stupidity. Sell Loblaws stock.

This is the perfect challenge for even normal 15 to 25 year-olds with a basement computer PLUS serious crooks. EVs are 2022 Edsels for Canada and the USA east of Arizona. Loblaws is having supply chain problems, so maybe they should fix their core business first.

Cost of paying an experienced truck driver in a normal truck: priceless.

  2. Usually the driver is the guy unloading the truck at the destination. Gonna offload that on the customers?

    1. My first thought. If the guy isn’t going to bring it up the front stairs I may as well go to the store.

    2. “…..,delivering products to its stores.”
So, looks like it will only deliver to Loblaw stores where a Loblaw employee will offload and stack on shelves….at least for the time being.

  3. Safe to say the ‘ without driver ‘ phase is going to be delayed indefinitely. The technology just isn’t there. When the snow flies there’s no way in hell a computerized vehicle can process, or even take in, enough info to navigate out of the parking lot without getting stuck.

    1. And the technologists care too much about Canadians to ever attempt anything that would put them at risk of even the slightest injury.

Have you had your 4th booster?

    2. So this supposed Public serpent replies that he is not at liberty to reply to a legitimate question, who the hell does he think has a right to ask these questions? Obviously not any bought and paid for “Journalist” and definitely not any poor taxpaying unworthy who does not deserve any recognition from such an exalted position that he occupies. Polievre is correct the gate keepers like this guy have to go and as soon as possible or Truedopia will be the result !

  4. I wonder whose toddler it’ll be that ends up on the front of the grill along with the bike.
Shame too…the streets in the GTA were safer for bicyclists once Ontario AG Michael Bryant quit politics.
Weird as well is how I had to put my first born up as collateral to the insurance company to install a shitty ass wood stove in my house.
Underwriters for Loblaws – “Driverless trucks? Shouldn’t be a problem.”

    1. That was my first question, which government gave them grants to do this, much like the Fascist Government Refrigerator Rebuild

  5. One reason of plenty I’ll not patronize any Loblaw’s of any sort. Like the great Jeremy Boreing said- stop giving money to people who hate you.

  6. Loblaw’s new product line was just announced.

Looking forward to the Roadkill branding. Discount meat products coming soon to a store near you.

  7. Should there be an accident, the lawsuits will be fascinating to follow, even if these trucks are shown to be safer than those with drivers.

  8. I have to assume that the government granted them indemnity from any lawsuits that result from this disaster-in-the-making. Don’t worry Loblaws – the taxpayers will pick up the tab yet again. It’s a no-lose situation for you!

      1. Having a self driving truck as Prime Minister would be an improvement over the current diaper king.

  9. I can see pedestrians standing right tight to the corner. As the driverless truck makes a right hand turn. But I’m sure someone would have thought about that.

  10. One can bet the crooked, price fixing, took a $15 million dollar hand out from Trudeau to buy “green fridges” from China, the Weston’s, received a taxpayer funded handout again from Trudeau.
Anyone who shops at their stores (Loblaws, Superstore, Shoppers Drug Mart) should question their sanity.

  11. When it suddenly goes full terminator and spins donuts on an Afro-Taliban, pro-Azov, anti-hijab, hijab wearing, dragtivist, influencer while spraying generic soy loops and sprouted pumpkin spice oatmilk across the orange crosswalk of eternal reconciliation, whose liability is it? I’m going to guess federal taxpayers.

    1. The storm surge didn’t harm my house. It was my Tesla that exploded a week later that burnt it down.
