  1. The veneer of civilization is thin indeed, but blaming it all on Biden, or progressives, or your favourite bête noire-de-jour is shallow, lazy, and self-serving thinking.

    This is a shared problem, arising from the fundamental characteristics, flaws, and limitations of humanity itself. As a species, we’re not designed for long-term planning, self-sacrifice, or collective action at scale. Every major issue Hansen raises (and tries to pin on Biden)—energy, borders, law and order, cost of living, geopolitical conflicts—is decades in the making and multinational/global in nature. They are the culmination of human selfishness, greed, short-term thinking, and complacency. They are your fault, and mine, and everyone who came before.

    “Civilization” as we now know it requires effort and cooperation to build and sustain; it happens in spite of our baser instincts, not because of it.

    1. The dozens of cities burned in the summer of 2020 argues otherwise. That was liberal projection at its finest.

      1. And Jan 6th was a “conservative” iteration of the same. We can go back and forth like this forever, but to what end? An inability to see beyond political affiliations is part of the problem.

Equating a handful of random Q-Anon true believers strolling through statuary hall with well organized, funded, and bailed-out (thanks Kamela) criminals destroying $Billions in property, looting more millions and murdering dozens is exactly what VDH is talking about. You’ve lost all perspective and understanding of what underpins our society … true Justice … and civilization.

          VDH has got it exactly right … we arrogantly are reverting to a new feudalism. And here in CA … I live in Feudalism Central. Land of the ultra rich (and comfy) suburbs and the unwashed impoverished hordes. Outside the invisible gates and walls of the economic divide are the shantytowns, immobile RV parks, and tent cities of the terminally poor … and permanently criminal.

          My formerly beautiful Golden State has NEVER been anything remotely like this current dystopia. Never in my 67 years of living, working, and playing here has the economic divide resembled The Dark Ages as it does now. If this is what passes for “progressive” … we need a completely new dictionary.

    2. Well, no it isn’t shallow, lazy or self-serving thinking. The ignoring of the “thin veneer” has been deliberate by an ideology that ignores reality. The foundations of “civilization” as you put it have been pushed so far into the background that the last couple of generations have no concept of those foundations. As with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, the lower parts of the pyramid are invisible to most….and they ignore them at their peril. They are NOT the fault of many who have been warning of the issue for decades.

    3. The installation of Biden is but one symptom of a larger problem. He is a focal point for some people illustrating how wrong the American electoral process is and how it led to various other things.

    4. Yeah, ok, sure. The cause of all of society’s current ills is reducible simply to “the left”. You’re on the right side of history on all matters, your ideological beliefs are unimpeachable, and utopia would surely follow if only the implementation of your ideas wasn’t constantly thwarted by your political “enemies”. Everything is someone else’s fault, you countenance zero responsibility for any of it. 100% blameless, a perfect victim.

      Enjoy the rest of a life spent complaining ineffectually to no one in particular.

          1. One of those ideologies is reality based and has principles that will result in a healthy society – the other has ZERO basis in reality and its ideology and lack of principles will result in the destruction of Western civilization – which is its intent

            Peterson is trying to find the middle ground between the arsonist and the fireman.

          2. But any serious viewpoint has to be ideological. The challenge is not to remove the ideology from the viewpoint, for that cannot be done. The challenge is to keep the ideology sane, and if possible, valid.

      2. Oh. You’re one of “those” who believes themselves superior to the “simplicity” of left vs right. You are one of “the arrogant” that VDH cites. “Left” or “Right” is simply shorthand for a far more complex ideological divide. Nobody’s ideological beliefs are unimpeachable … however … there is this amazing thing called: reality. The “progressive” ideologies of the left are demonstrably destroying the lives of all those they purport to help. Releasing criminals into (mostly) the poor and needy communities. Creating a culture of utter dependence replacing self-reliance. Destroying our modern infrastructure to replace it with an ancient one.

        And let me add, that just as the “right” are far more tolerant of opposing beliefs than the “left”, we are also far more circumspect and willing to challenge our own orthodoxies. That is the only reason we are here at this inflection point of history … because the tolerant “right” has sat on their hands and allowed our culture to terminally decay. Because … tolerance.

    1. A general lack of accountability. It is lawlessness. It was a fundamental transformation of America.

      The left will never learn. They will tear down the fence society determined it needed given CENTURIES of experience to keep the evil at bay– and when the evil slinks through they look the other way.

      Evil then boldly walks through.

    2. VDH used to be pretty reliable – but now hes a big Ukraine booster and will not use as a foundation of his columns that the US election was stolen in broad daylight in a very obvious and clumsy manner.

  4. They are freeing the criminals and criminalizing the free. When the Crumb “In Charge”, is finally gone, we have to have a discussion about bolstering our Bill of Rights. We don’t have one if the Gov. can over rule it with some made up crisis.. Gun rights need a place.

    The notion of American exceptionalism is asinine.
