Globe and Mail- A highly contagious political virus is pouring over the Canada-U.S. border
Once upon a time, Canada’s Conservatives had a natural defence mechanism against being overly influenced by any of that: The party was anti-American. Proudly so.

The Canadian phenomenon of anti-Americanism has always been rooted in envy.
I’ve heard the term “the Canadian national inferiority complex” since at least the early 90’s.
The complex is well earned. When it comes to certain matters, such as standing on one’s own two feet and not whining for big momma gubmint, Canadians are vastly inferior to Americans.
“Canadians are vastly inferior to Americans.”
Wide brush – simplified, a large controlling segment of Canadian society is vastly inferior to 1/2 of American society that continues to maintain it’s traditional values of freedom and individuality.
Many Canadians particularly in the east remain a byproduct of bygone British & French empire.
I’ve lived on both sides of the border, and there is no way on God’s green earth that I would mention any such sentiment about superiority or inferiority because it’s extremely rude to anyone how hears it, even if it’s told on their behalf.
It doesn’t apply to individuals. It’s basically the finger.
However, being a yanqui imperialist running dog, I have to hear a lot. I ignore it and think to myself “man, what a strange complex. You’d think it was a irrational feeling of inferiority”.
It doesn’t help that the CBC and other civil dialogue grew vividly US-hating over the past 40 years, and did so deliberately in the cause of reinforcing Canadian identity.
Have I mentioned that Canadians are very stupid? Now put on your mask, take your fifth shot and S T F U.
“the Canadian national inferiority complex”
100%.
Any honest “Canadian” knows this well, although it appears to be a central Canadian complex first and foremost.
Diddo Pureblood, Paul and Joe…
I will add that the Canuck complex became more and more prevalent as the Country moved further to the left say, since middle finger Trudeau lit the fuse of big lefty destruction some half century ago.
Editorial Board of the Globe and Mail? If I didn’t know the answer I would have to ask, have any of these guys ever been to Canada? No they haven’t. They have spent all their lives in Toronto.
The Globe and Mail can say this crap because it knows that it will never face a countercriticism or even identification of the insult, or have to deal with “the globe and anchor” in any event.
That type of character only slap the ones you know won’t slap back.
I really believe this is a pre-emptive strike against any CPC candidate (other than their beloved Jean Charade) who may win the CPC leadership.
The other candidates are generally speaking common sense. (Let’s leave the WEF and other accusations aside for the moment.) How can the media handicap them?
The best way to counter ANY common sense argument in Canada is simply to identify it as “American style politics.”
No facts needed, no inkling that maybe our Southern neighbors have actually had some great ideas (Elected Senate, for example).
Just bring out the American label, or even the dreaded “Trump style” label, and no self respecting Canadian will listen to a word that Pierre, Leslyn, Roman, Scott, or even Max has to say, no matter how basic and a priori obviously true it may be. Their policies may even echo what said Canadian has uttered around his or her kitchen table. No matter – once the American label has been applied, our proud Canadian will publicly disparage any idea or policy saddled with that identification, and will refuse to vote for it.
The CBC et al have done their job well. The politics of hatred, rather than reason.
Is anyone else tired of this “wicked, heathenish and American” trope?
Projection, much?
“Once upon a time, Canada’s Conservatives had a natural defence mechanism against being overly influenced by any of that: The party was anti-American. Proudly so”
Now do the Liberal party!! And how its nothing resembling liberal…
I’ll wait…
That thinly disguised shot at PP was part of the Laurentian Elite’s campaign for Jean Charest. Journalists are the last group on the planet to be advising people on politics. In the social order of deceit and evil, they rank below lawyers. There is, however a large contingent of Conservatives who are barely distinguishable from Liberals and otherwise devoid of critical thinking. They are the G&M drones. The authors of today’s hate speech know that Charest is a guarantee that the CPC will lose the next election and Max will be gifted more liberty oriented voters, not enough to win of course but enough to ensure Liberal hegemony continues. The only people who don’t see that are the mindless mushy middle and deceitful left wing of the CPC.
That is a good analysis, the presstitutes are terrified of Pierre Poilievre and/or Maxime Bernier.
The idea that they might have to survive in a competitive environment terrifies the grifters.
The Liberals have stoked anti-American sentiments among us for as long as I’ve been alive. It’s one of their core principles. They trash talk the U.S., when there aren’t any Americans around of course, to score domestic political points then throw their hypocrisy into high gear to complain when the Americans do something they don’t like.
The Cons on the other hand, are always labelled American lackey’s because they have to spend so much time and effort to repair the relationship with our neighbour that buys over 70% of our exports.
Years ago Iran under Mahmood Ahmadinejad, a Muslim extremist, held a Holocaust denialist conference, which got plenty of media play. The speakers were mostly Idlamic anti-Semites, with a few very far-rightist from elsewhere. A woman opinion columnist with the Canadian Jewish News focused on one speaker, who called Jews “insects” and “a virus”, much like Adolph Hitler and his followers did decades ago. The columnist concluded her column by saying that Jews would always face antisemitism, but why do people call us viruses?
The opinion essay stuck with me over the years. When the China flu virus hit in 2000, uber-elite writer Andrew Coyne, also writing in the Globe and Mail, attacked Donald Trump supporters by calling them “a virus” like the China virus. So now, here, the Glode editorial board calls Ronald Trump supporters and Pierre Poilievre supporters “a virus”.
The establishment elites, thus, use inflammatory language like the vicious anti-Semites. They indeed use hateful language. But these big-Liberals are wealthy and powerful. They will support the Trudeau-Singh government when they start going after small-conservatives on the internet.
Since remote work became the new normal I’ve been working for US companies and I’ve had to gently explain to some of my co-workers just how much everyone in Canada hates Americans. All Americans, regardless of their political or social leanings. They’re quite dismayed when I show them articles like this.
1/2 of Canadians hate 1/2 of Americans – the 1/2 that doesn’t politically align with them.
The vast majority of Americans don’t give Canadians even an afterthought to care one way or another.
It’s true. Upper and lower Kannada hated “Americans” more than they hated each other.
Partners in crime ever since.
The Thomsons are frightened Poilievre will put the kibosh to their subsidy meal ticket.
From the editorial:”What does it want to do about millions of Americans who can’t afford health care? Nothing. What about climate change? Deny it. School shootings? Arm teachers. COVID-19? Just get over it.” That’s an awesome program. I wish somebody really would try to implement it.
The Canadian phenomenon of anti-Americanism has always been rooted in controlled leftist media-driven propaganda.
They birthed this hatred, and now use it as a tool to frighten sheep into predictable responses.
Such as defending Canada’s superior healthcare system…
-eyeroll-
Watto, “-eyeroll-” Yup, but it’s become constant, like a slot machine rotating constantly lol!
I notice those demented screaming crazy f*cks didn’t bother enumerating any of the supposed “lawbreaking” of President Trump.
But they’re the ones moored in reality. Wear a mask! CO2 is the control knob for the planet’s climate, and warm weather is bad!
“…enumerating any of the supposed “lawbreaking” of President Trump.”
Any? They couldn’t itemize one. The piece is a total embarrassment. We’re all dumber having read it.
Andrew Coyne is and always will be a wanker.
“In brief, the bill, as described in the Free Alberta Strategy, a revolutionary tract drafted by a trio of cranks last year and embraced by Ms. Smith as her own, would presume to empower the government of Alberta to ignore any federal laws it deemed invasive of provincial jurisdiction or contrary to Alberta’s interests.”
https://archive.ph/DZ86Z
you mean the not withstanding clause of the constitution!
Leftism is the disease, like cancer, only stops when the host (society) dies.
Conservatism is the cure.
“Conservatism is the cure”.
Conservatism will be the norm again once the ash settles and the hard work of rebuilding begins.
Anti-Americanism is most pronounced when the left malign the US health care system to scare away all talk of reform in Canada (a la G&M above). Conservative anti-Americanism was prevalent during the Red Tory days of Diefenbaker. In those days the (always leftist) media loved JFK. When Trudeau 1.0 arrived, the LPC became Quebec oriented and therefore anti-Anglo, distancing the deranged dominion from the UK and therefore closer to the US (not him personally). This peaked during the Mulroney-Reagan years and again with the media-nurtured Obama-envy years (Obama good, Harper Bad). Trump incited a reversal as the media ensured the hate-filled bile taps were full on during his term. The pathological anti-Americanism continues but is also more bifurcated on political party lines. Having lived in the US, the vast majority of Americans know very little of the deranged dominion and could care less.
Correct. We’re just a useful foil.
What the wielders of this nonsense need to understand is that we don’t care. The Amerika-hasser types are people we think very little of. When it gets bad enough, I mention how narrow and sheltered their lives are, how easy it is to tell youself that you carry a kind of undergrad dorm sophistication when no-one needs what they’re selling.
John
Had some fun when in the USA and told some of those Americans who were ignorant of things Canadian, that Canada was bigger than the USA.
Face it… most Canadians are self righteous pricks… acting like they’re superior to the US with their over inflated better than thou attitudes. This article is entirely wrong in every way, but I don’t have to convince anyone here of that.
John
Albertan
I’d say SOME Canadians are, and that’s okay, because in reality these are the most unaccomplished and insular people to be found. All of their presently fashionable beliefs are borrowed and aren’t founded in any useful virtue.
I think their problem is that they are a more extreme form of our northeastern US magical thinkers and delusionals. It is why the really cool and insightful Canadians avoid the democrat dominated cities of the US like the plague (which they are).
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Ottawankers and Torontonians are more despised than Americans in many parts of Canada. I’ve travelled extensively through both countries for decades and met many more memorable people south of the border. Reserved, polite and snobby they were not.
You don’t know Jack, Paddy.
Sorry, couldn’t resist 🙂
Francisco:
In 1984 the phrase is Two Minutes Hate (no ‘of’)
Here is the response I got from a childhood friend when I sent him a link to a G&M Ibbitson piece smearing PP for being against all vaccines, whereas in fact his private member’s bill referred to C-19 only and the tyrannical injection mandate. He is a 100% legacy media consumer.
Poilievre is a NUT case and an irrational being…not sure he has any humanity so I won’t drag us Humans to his level…only the discontented, angry white males, evangelical wackos and Albertans will have him as a leader. Most right thinking individuals would not be part of his agenda..
Going straight over the top is rarely persuasive.
Read G&M for many years. It was a good paper with various voices which included Margaret Wente, Neil Reynolds and others. Right now it is only marginally better than the Star, which is not enough to willingly pay for it. They have been TDS since 2015 publishing daily anti- Trump pieces, sometime two sometimes three articles and opinions devoid of any facts, just outbursts of paranoia.
I hope PP wins and cuts all subsidies to them.
Not only hateful but erroneous.
This is just another piece of Laurentian hyperventilation. The Grope & Flail’s stock in trade.
The GDR would regularly paint West Germany as a Nazi state in their propaganda and how their communist dystopia was so much freer.
That is what a lot of Canadian propaganda these days reminds me of when it comes to the US.
More signs of weakness from the Bolsheviks. At one time, the editorial board of the Globe and Mail was respected. Now, it is a freak float in the first year of eternal Pride. This editorial was written not for the readership of the paper, but for the moneybags who are calling the tune. This made, what?, ten or fifteen perfumed dandies reaffirm what they already believed; as for the thousands offended, alienated, and, driven to look for their watering cans for the tree of liberty, they do not care. This is a puff piece for the boss; it should be in context of the meeting where it was presented: with knee pads, bicycle handlebar hood, and, flaming pasties. Puff away, editorial board.
Been in 43 of the lower 48. And find most Americans to be great people, and excellent hosts. Wouldn’t hesitate to move there! Love Florida, and been there several times. But I may move to central America instead, because demoKKKaps!
My goodness! Aren’t they full of undeserved smugness?!
Can’t open the G&M comment section, +300 comments. Would love to read those comments, which way are they leaning? Agreeing with the article,,, or condemning it???
Hey Jolene. Remove the archive.ph portion of the web address and then try it. Last I checked, there was just over 700 comments. I read a few but finally quit as my blood pressure was starting to get into the danger zone. I can only read so many thoughts from liberals. I am probably just a fringe minority though…
“The GOP agenda has been almost entirely about obstruction. The Inflation Reduction Act, the watered-down bill to reduce climate emissions and enhance health care, passed with zero Republican votes. That’s because small-government impulses of the old GOP have been replaced by something closer to no-government impulses.”
The misnamed “Inflation Reduction Act” is yet another expansion of government, over the expressed rejection of the Republicans…
It must be too much for the mindtrust of the glob and flail to understand that an expansion of government, goes against “small-government impulses”
I also suppose it’s too much to ask why they don’t bring up the example of any number of democrats who contested their failures to get elected, starting with AL Gore of Gorebull warming fame
My two cents other than all the fact-based comments already posted: this is just a continuance of the anti-conservative narrative.
The one that will eventually make it illegal to be conservative in Canada.
Hag Telford and her PMO and the Liberal Party of Canada know full well we are in a cold civil war.
They will criminalize dissent.
They say they’re not against conservatives per se, just the alt right, far right, extreme right: racists/misogynists/terrorists.
Of course this is anyone who isn’t a blue Liberal like that ex-BC premier cow or Hag LeBreton, Patrick Fckface Brown or K-bec Charest.
As the cold civil war warms, look for the rhetoric to become absolutely divorced from all aspects of reality.
Its what neo-Marxists and their agit-prop minions do.
Anti-Americanism is rooted from the UEL. Remember these people were the losers of the Revolutionary War and many of them lost everything they had because they bet that King George III would win the war. So, as someone opined much of it is rooted in envy–because they lost their properties, homes, businesses to the winners who eventually became known as Americans. It has perpetuated over the centuries because America has become one of the greatest countries on earth and fills a lot of pages in history books–Canada gets maybe a quarter of a page and a couple of footnotes.
That was awful. Wonder who wrote it. If they are so worried about the influence of American politics/culture, maybe they should have picked up on this point when the left was going nuts over the George Floyd episode. Americans: “We’re racist.” Canadians: “Hey, we’re racist too. We’re racist too!” I think Canadian anti-Americanism is so much phony posturing. Clearly the left enjoys imitating the Americans when it suits them.
Conservatism is a “virus”. The desire for liberty is a “contagion”. you can imagine what the author thinks of the Freedom Convoy truckers…
Every time I see a column like this, I imagine it being read by Hugo Weaving in his best “Agent Smith” voice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYL28a0LM_A
Will this G&M garbage satisfy the PMO’s quota for anti-American bigotry and also count as one of their quota of attacks on conservatives?
A twofer for the PMO’s quotas.
It was written by the Grope and Fail’s “editorial board”. All I need to know and no need to go further. As GB Shaw once said, “you don’t have to eat a whole apple to know it rotten.”
Back in 2007 A bunch of us Left Flagstaff and rode to Prudoe Bay on motorcycles. I was on a KTM 950. Most of the rest were on BMW’s. As we traveled up the Alcan Hwy. I couldn’t help but notice a slight resentment towards us coming from the Canadians. Nobody ever said anything but it was plain in their body language. Maybe they thought we were scooter trash. Felt great when we got to Alaska. On the way back my fuel pump went out and I worked on the bike in Calgary. The people in that town were great. I was in the parking lot of the Blackfoot BMW place and the owner came out and said I could use any tools I needed from their shop. Really nice folks. Of course they didn’t have the original pump and I was having to adapt one I got at Napa. I guess the people there in Calgary were used to Americans because of the oil industry. Only place in Canada that we had gone that I felt welcome and at home.
John G, Sorry you had that experience (except for Calgary) Sadly, it does seem to run along political fault lines.
I think you’ll find most here on SDA are pro US, the real US, and the real Americans, not those bumbling idiots on the east and west coast. As others here have noted, when you get away from the big diseased cities, the real Americans area good, decent, polite, friendly, warm and pleasant, salt of the earth type people!
They have no idea the hate I have for them.
I’m coming for them.
I’m a nobody.
But “they” insist I conform.
I trained their trainers.
I love them all as my child.
Try to see to they’re every needs’.
Remember your training.
And Your Oath.
Paper and personal.
When it hits you it hits’ you.
God or bust.
