In the wake of the massacre in Bucha, I was joined this week by my good friend, David Goldman from Asia Times to discuss Russia’s war plan in Ukraine and Biden’s dangerous response to Russia’s actions. We then pivoted to India and it’s decision to support Russia then on to the Middle East to consider what Russia’s remorseless pursuit of Ukraine’s destruction means for Israel, with Russia in control of Syria and the direct avenues of approach to Iran.

  1. Mostly nonsense. Start with this: “What is Russia’s strategic plan?”

    There isn’t one. They are running away showing all the signs of an army in disintegration as bad as Germany in 1944, the British army retreating from Kabul in 1842, the British army retreating from Burgos in 1813. Drunkenness, indiscipline, looting are all the usual symptoms of this kind of collapse, and the Russian army is now going through this.

    Strategic plan? What was Germany’s strategic plan in 1944? What was Argentina’s strategic plan in 1982? There wasn’t one. After the Ardennes offensive in December 1944, Germany was finished.

    Now, the Russians are defeated, and their army is running away around Kyiv. Much of Ukraine is a de-facto no-fly zone given the Russian losses of helicopters and elite Spetsnaz. Sinking of the Moskva would show that Ukraine has barred Russian naval forces from Ukraine coastal waters, much as the sinking of the Eilat closed Egyptian coastal waters in 1967.

    What does this tell everyone in the Middle East? That the Russian armed forces are at least as incompetent as when they invaded Afghanistan in 1979. They have made essentially no progress since the disasters of the 1st and 2nd Chechnya wars.

      if there was a plan it failed and any perceived ‘victories’ by the russkies now in Ukraine will peter out at some point.
      resorting to the usual rape and pillage aint on track as far as how the komrads spend their time and
      resources and follow orders.
      l will NO LONGER think fondly and bittersweet and a certain gratitude for their victory in the fight with the facists.
      no longer wonder how were the lives of those that put the hammer and sickle atop the blasted and burned out reichtag?

      I think we all agree that it is not what it was when Pootin launched his offensive. Utter miscalculation that will be studied by military and political historians for decades. So what’s plan B? And here is where I think you may be wrong. He knows he can’t conquer Ukraine but what if he can ruin Ukraine? He can try to pull a Richelieu in Thirty Year War and strangle Ukraine to the point on near uninhabitability, the way HRE was devastated in mid 1640s. Yes this can still backfire against him, but it is not impossible.

      Yes and no. In a civilized country they are, but were talking about russia here. Russians behaved like this in 1914, in 1920, in 1939, in 1945, in 1956, in 1968. This a Mongol way, they know no other.

    1. They’ve been obsessed with it since he arose to power. They don’t control and rob Russia like they did under Yeltsin. They want Russia’s wealth for themselves and people like Nuland just cannot get over the fact that Russia is not communist. Also, NATO needs a justification and bombing the Serbs and Libyans was too easy.

    2. “Putin’s remorseless pursuit of Ukraine’s destruction.” Not true! The US neocon remorseless pursuit of Russia’s destruction is, however, clearly incontrovertibly true.

    Therefore I did not feel compelled to watch the interview.

    1. I’m afraid that the Russian’s world view is preferable to ours.
      Manifest destiny is an obscenity against Nature.
      All that is real is economics, which is actually the thermodynamic of very complex dissipative systems in very very far from equilibrium states. Pareto’s Law, etc. The more a society shies away from physical reality, the greater the catastrophe.

        Obviously if Russia has no right to exist (one of two countries in the world that does not enjoy this privilege) anything it does to protect its security is axiomatically unjust. And anything done by its enemy — like running a massacre hoax with a single videotape it made with absolutely zero proof — should be accepted on faith.

        Check out Lew Rockwell whose banner reads: anti state – anti-war – pro free markets. He manages to make a cogent argument in favour of Putin’s legitimate security concerns. Oh, sorry. The country does not have a right to exist.

        Russia is NOT the Soviet Union which an ethnic Pole like yourself is justified in arguing didn’t have a right to exist. And it doesn’t anymore. Martin Armstrong argues that if Putin is brought down what would follow would be infinitely worse.

It does not mean the whore of nations has a right. Nor does it, at any point lead to the ridiculous conclusion that I am hoping for a nuclear war. That’s just stupid.

          This was said before they had hundreds of nukes, and he was right. That option is unfortunately off the table. But yes, we should be doing everything to stack the deck against them and to make them as weak as possible.

          The Russian massacres are not a hoax, nor are the mass rapes, nor is sending thousands of Ukrainians to gulags, nor is kidnapping thousands of children. These are examples of russians being russian. The sooner you stop denying reality the better.

          You want russia to exist? I don’t see why. They’re vile and worthless. They’re subhuman. They’re Mongols. World would be better off without them than with them. You dare to talk about “Putin’s legitimate security concerns.” ?????

          All this bullshit about russia’s concerns is simply about their right to dominate and enslave her neighbours. All people much more valuable than russians.       If I wanna know what’s going on at ground level in the Ukraine… it will be via 1 or 2 Totally independent reporters. Patrick Lancaster for one…and this guy speaks Russian as well as English.

      The MSM simply switched off Covid Bullshit and went 100% all in on Ukraine Bullshit…as they were COMPELLED to do.

    I never see mentioned Russia’s conventional long range artillery? Don’t they constantly have the option to roll the big guns down from Russia and Belarus? Cheaper than precision missiles. Expensive in lives, property and world opinion, but effective. With Russian air superiority, does Ukraine have any counter for that?
    My (barely informed) prediction: Russia take what they want in Donbass, occupy/secure/pacify Mariupol and Odessa, then unleash on a medium sized city or 2 to the west(maybe not Kiev itself, but, maybe Kiev), go all Grozny/Sarajevo on them. Probably wait till around September to escalate. Close to winter. Germans will broker a deal even if they have to bypass the Yanks (because, like Victoria Nuland said all those years ago:”y’know, fk the Europeans”). Germany will ‘buy’ the Donbass from Ukraine and use the Donbass to pay for gas.
    Hard to see the Yanks missing out on all the spoils, though. Sleepy Joe didn’t send Hunter over there just for the big paycheques

      Then you’re not paying attention. They have been using them all the time 2S3, 2S7, 2S19 have been featured extensively. So did MLRS both Grad and Uragan.
