The original title of this piece was going to be “Why Russians Love Putin” but as I’ve written before, Vladimir Putin is not a leader who inspires love. What he does enjoy is widespread support from across Russian society. Why?
The answer to this question eludes many commentators because few understand Russian history, including relatively recent events.

I’ve been following them as well and enjoy Alex C.’s “Clown World” stories, especially the banning of the letters “Z & V” by various virtue signaling countries. When he came out with the story that Zelensky wanted to ban red, white & blue flags, I wasn’t sure if it was an April Fool’s joke, but at this point, nothing would surprise me. I have a Ukrainian-Canadian neighbour who’s quite scathing in her opinion of Zelensky – calls him “The Actor”.
It’s interesting watching Lancaster’s interviews with Mariupol residents. There’s no doubt in their minds who’s to blame and it’s not Putin.

Putin has long struck me as a mostly pragmatic nationalist, in that he wants what is best for Russia. To be sure, there is plenty of Louis XIV “L’état, c’est moi” going on, in that what’s best for Russia takes the form of enriching Putin and his cronies personally, and I’m not a fan of his apparent desire to reconstitute the empire.
But he does have one undeniable virtue: He has tied his fortunes to the success or failure of Russia, while most of his peers are happy to be transnational aristocrats with no loyalty to anyone or anything except their own privileged class.

In this conflict, despite the always horrific actions of war, I find it hard to distill anything into black and white. I have little interest in either fascist regime although the only likely resolution not involving a wider global mess is the cutting-up and neutralizing of the Ukraine. A strategy of prolonged degrading of the Russian military to the last Ukrainian soldier risks the psychopath Putin pushing some nasty buttons. Messing with Europe’s gas station and Asia’s bread basket will cause some other unexpected results by the fall. It’s likely already too late to hope for any ending that could bring Russia westward rather than into the arms of Xi Jinping. Screwing around by heeding the distraction-seeking leaders of the bankrupt western welfare states as they rediscover / continue their inner neo-con adventurism in a conflict that is still backstopped in MAD is another form of Mad. Personally, I feel more threatened by the Spawn-Fuhrer and the pathologies behind his power than from the never-ending tribalism of Europe.

Russia was never a global superpower. It certainly had some heft after WW2, but it was a rotten dictatorship run by morons.
It’s people lived in fear and in poverty for 70 years. Everyone had lots of money, but nothing to buy, unless one had foreign currency. It was the era of “We pretend to work and they pretend to pay us.’
The government wasted the resources of the nation on a military, bureaucracy and ruling class as incapable as they were corrupt.
The factories produced goods only the poorest of the poor considered worthy. Corruption, black markets, murder, secret trials, gulags, executions, poverty, empty stores, state sponsored criminality, rotten consumer goods, little food, were the daily routine.
Overnight everything changed in that everyone Soviet learned and saw the true state of Russia that had existed in tyrannical disguise for decades.
