‘Know what would be an even greater blow against woke? Adults not watching kids’ shows.
Its the nostalgia factor.
Agreed. They don’t make movies for grown-ups anymore.
I remember such greats as “Three Days of the Condor”, “Marathon Man”, not to mention all the old Charles Bronson, Humphrey Bogart and Clint Eastwood flics.
Ah yes ” The Maltese Falcon “, the Spaghetti Westerns.
Miss those movies.
They still make those titles. It’s just that now they’re all animated and all the characters are gay black people.
You didn’t read the review, and Cobra Kai is not a kids show. Yes, it’s cashing in on Gen X nostalgia, but it throws out the cheesy John Hughes tropes of the original and takes the premise seriously.
I have watched all four seasons of “Cobra Kai” and have really enjoyed it. Yes, some part are ridiculous (the rumble between dojos in the high school at the end of season 2) but total fun to watch. Do not recall any virtue signaling at any point during the show. Which may be one of the reasons I’m still watching it. If you enjoyed the first 3 films, you will enjoy the series. Builds on and references the movies regularly.
On advice from a review column I read just before Christmas I took the chance and watched the first episode with my wife and older teenage kids. I thought my wife would hate it but soon we did the binge watching thing and karate chopped our way through all 4 seasons. Overall the messages given are actually very good. But the language, especially from the main protagonist, Johnny Lawrence and some of the kids can be pretty trashy. Also there’s sexual references peppered throughout (e.g. one kid’s nicknamed “Penis Breath”) and violence occurs often and sometimes gratuitously. If you can keep the TV remote handy to skip past a handful of cringey moments (the majority in Season 1) the series will positively surprise and give those watching a lot to think about. I actually found myself rooting for both Johnny Lawrence and Daniel Larusso. The introduction of characters from the movies was a lot of fun too. In some ways it’s like watching one very long PG14 Karate Kid movie where kids are anything but pampered. Mr. Miyagi’s spirit is definitely alive and well throughout. And if you love older cars Johnny goes through a few of them. I found Season 4 the best with Seasons 1 & 3 tied next and Season 2 (still watchable) last.
A new show on my binge list … thanks. And don’t forget ‘Yellowstone’ and it’s prequel ‘1883’ … both are unapologetically “real world” in their portrayals. I have enjoyed both thoroughly.
I never realized those country folk in Montana were such a bunch of coarse mouthed murderers. Even their women swear twice as much as I do and have a broader trash vocabulary than most oil field workers. Are you sure it’s “real world”?
I will be avoiding Montana in the near future as a result, although I can’t get across the boarder anyways being a pureblood and all.
I suspect REAL cowhands have a rather salty repartee. As for Bethany Dutton … she was educated at the top Universities, then returned to the ranch … having learned all the political and business dirty tricks and dirty language in the big city. Yeah, she’s just a LITTLE over the top … but we can’t have a boring ranch or boring Bozeman now can we? And she reminds me of my best friends wife … they’re nearly identical.
And, no … I don’t believe the body count is anywhere near “reality” … but it is just a HOLLYWOOD (MTV) concoction. But it does show Natives and Native leadership fairly accurately, and it does portray the struggle to maintain Virgin land in its (near) Virgin state. The struggle with development … the Jackson-Holeing of Montana/Wyoming/Idaho … against agricultural use.
I wouldn’t go so far as to call it Anti-Woke but it has very little wokeness to it. The show respects the original characters at them same times as adding in new ones, so basically the opposite of what Disney did with Star Wars.
The show isn’t perfect but it is entertaining and has a lot of moments that are not PC and quite hilarious. Definitely worth a watch.
To not be obviously woke is to be anti-woke. You didn’t get the message yet?
For those enjoying this show, there’s a Jonathan Brandeis/Chuck Norris movie on Amazon Prime called Sidekicks that is Chuck Norris’ deconstruction of the Karate Kid movies. Yes, it’s a cheesy kids’ movie, but the basic message – wallowing in adolescent power fantasy is inconsistent with building excellence and personal character – is apropos at this time.
Saw that in the theaters back when it came out. Fun movie
Had to give it up a couple of shows into season 3 – it just got too cringy for me…so much cheese….
The Drinker did a great review on this quite awhile back…

A “spoiler alert” may be appropriate here.
Cobra Kai is one of those incredibly rare shows that I can watch with my two teenaged sons that we all enjoy.
Yes it’s cheesy but it knows it and doesn’t take itself too seriously.
The Johnny Lawrence character is hilarious.
Good fun.
I wrote a review of this show for Poletical.
Read it here: http://www.poletical.com/cobra-kai-netflix.php
It is mostly anti-woke…especially the first couple seasons. Great show. Worth checking out.
