In certain government departments, they were kept under surveillance they were seen as potential security threats. Foreign agents might select them as potential moles, using the threat of blackmail about their inclinations as a way of getting them to co-operate.

The number I have seen, we have about 60 or less suspected ‘white-supremist’ in the CAF which has about 76,000 members. Or about 1 in 1300. I am pretty sure the RCMP have much worse numbers

Just going by what I heard a long time ago. But other government employees were suspect and, from some accounts I heard, quietly sacked or found other ways out, if you know what I mean.
For example, Canadian diplomat Herbert Norman killed himself in the late 1950s. He was suspected by some to be a communist agent, with some allegations that he might have had certain, shall we say, inclinations. I don’t believe there was any official confirmation or denial of that.
