Today in You’re a Bad Canadian

We. Don’t. Need. To. Agree. On. Everything.

Not all Canadian hockey fans backed Habs during playoff run: poll

Having a team in the Stanley Cup final can’t help Canada bridge its regional divisions.

Not everyone north of the border was backing the Montreal Canadiens as they tried in vain to deny the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning a second straight skate around the ice with hockey’s most cherished prize.

A cross-border online survey conducted over the weekend by Leger and the Association for Canadian Studies found 14 per cent of respondents — including nearly one in four from Manitoba and Saskatchewan — cheering on Tampa Bay.

But wait there more…

The survey also explored the political allegiances of respondents: of those who said they planned to vote for the Bloc Québécois, 82 per cent were supporting the Habs, compared with 71 per cent who said the Liberals.

The New Democrats found support among 55 per cent of those cheering on the Canadiens, just edging out the Conservatives at 53 per cent and the Green party at 42 per cent.

Injecting politics, moralizing lectures and mass conformity into every nanosecond of our existence.  We can’t even enjoy the simple pleasure of watching a good hockey game in peace anymore.

  1. Have you watched a sportsnet crap broadcast lately? it is all political crap before, between periods and at the end of each game. If I can’t find escape from the daily bludgeoning that the news give us, I just won’t watch anymore.

  2. Turn off the television and walk away…
President Trump was very fortunate to be internet savvy while our governments and politicians stuck with the declining mainstream media.
It really still shows how much our society still believes every single word the media propaganda puts out.
I already know people who are eagerly willing to get a third vaccination shot…
It’s a vaccine because they say so.

I don’t watch sports at all as all players are interchangeable and bought by the biggest purses.
Soccer is okay as I watch players embellishments on getting whacked.
Golf is good too as it is individual skill.

  3. As I have no choice in being Canadian, and the way this country has developed under 85% Liberal rule, I choose to be a bad Canadian. Oddly, it seems the most noble approach.

    1. Does a Canadian deserve to be frog-walked in front of a magistrate for not supporting the Habs?

  4. Burning down the Canada Life Centre is perfectly understandable under these circumstances.

  5. It’s been posited South of the border if all conservative minded sports fans turned off their TV sets for even one week it would fundamentally change the country overnight and not in a good way for those on the left. I believe this to be true.
I get it…most here are sports fans and that’s ok, I use to be one as well. But the owners of these teams and those who obtain the television rights and advertise their merch for these events hate your fng guts. So why are we tuning in?
Y’know…hockey ends in July for a reason…you’re being milked for every GD dollar they can get out of you cause they know sports fans are chumps and will shell out gobs of money just so owners/ players, TV execs can fart in silk bedsheets at night. Yet you’ll be on here Monday morning bitching about how you can’t go to your local restaurant because of Covid restrictions.
Tune them out!!!!! They hate you.

I know I’ll catch flak for this. Eff it.

    1. You wont catch anything from me..either.

100% Agreed. I used to be a huge hockey fan – Flames. However, since Covid and the Utter BS Hypocrisy of these pampered 20 yr old punk millionaires seemingly exempt from any “plandemic” restrictions…?? FUCK THEM. and the same goes for Bell and their piss poor streaming set up for 200/yr.

Am done. No more $$$ goes their way..
And strangely enough…I do not miss it whatsoever…

  6. My preference now is to turn the sound off and watch a game while listening to a podcast on my phone.

  7. Never understood this bizarre notion that Canadians have to cheer for the last Canadian pro sport team standing, especially in hockey where lots of people are lifelong fans of rival teams. Why would a Leafs fan ever cheer for Montreal? Makes no sense.

  8. So if I’m not watching and don’t care that must mean I’m independent.

Seriously if a winter sport can’t have the regular season wrapped up and the finals completed before the first day of summer, I can’t be bothered.

Have to wonder how many responses came back with “they haven’t finished the last season yet?”

    1. Should also add
This makes me a one issue voter.
      My issue?
I want to elect someone that from the day they announce their candidacy to the day they finally leave politics that during that time the fact that they exist drives my tormentors to fits of mouth foaming rage and caused them as much misery as they visited on their victims.

  9. To me, it doesn’t matter what the sport is, if there’s a team from Quebec involved, I cheer against them. (Unless they’re playing Russians. My contempt for Quebec is exceeded only by my contempt for Russia…and China is getting there too!)

    1. I cheered for the soviets against the habs, not for love of commie russia but bc i despise all things french cdn that much. Congrats champa bay

  10. Jesus wept its not international hockey its club hockey. Besides, the f**king Habs only had one French Canadian on the team.
I happily enjoyed watching the cup not go to Montreal because I’m a Senators fan.
And you ever not hear a Habs fan brag aboot all the cups they’ve won? The only ones worse are the Toronto Maple Jerkoff fans because they’re the product of sodomy.

    1. The Maple Loafs are now the biggest losers.
As of July 3, 2021, it’s been 19,786 days since the Leafs last won a championship. That breaks the previous record held by the New York Rangers who had gone 19,785 days between 1940-1994 without winning a title.

  11. Hockey?

When England beat the Danes 2-1 to advance to the Final of the 2020 Euros!? First time in 55 years! And Boris had opened Wembly JUST in time to enjoy the sound and songs of 75,000 delirious fans!

Go England! Try not to get beat 4-nil by the Italians! on Sunday … and yes … I am the rarest of all conservative Americans … a raging soccer fan. Why? Because the NFL, NBA, and MLB are all DEAD to me … if anyone wants to interview my political/soccer views

  12. “Never understood this bizarre notion that Canadians have to cheer for the last Canadian pro sport team standing,…”
Because being nationalistic over Canada’s game is big money and puts asses in the seats when it comes to sports. They know this. Maple Leafs are owned by Rogers Communications and Bell. Think these Kleptocrats give a shit about Canada???
Your dollar is their only concern.

  13. Yeah I’m glad they lost. Can’t forget how many Canadians east of the Rockies (particularly Toront-hole & Un-réal) supported our team in the 2011 Cup run – NOT! In any event, anything the Spawn likes (in this case, the Habs), I’ll take a pass on, pardon the pun.

    1. Concur

Oh wait ….. you didn’t say what I thought you did

You said take a pass on.

      Ok stand corrected

      1. You prove my point. I feel as much loyalty to all my ‘fellow countrymen’ as to Zimbabweans.

  14. My first text to my Habs loving buddy this morning was every time he sees me from now on I’ll be wearing a Nikita Kucherov jersey. Fuck the Habs.

  15. I’m a sports agnostic, so I don’t care if anyone plays hockey in July, let alone who’s playing.

My parents accumulated a lot of VHS recordings and DVDs over the years and I spent several weeks going through them. So, while many people were watching hockey, I was watching, say, the mini-series Noble House with Pierce Brosnan.

  16. To be fair … they’ve changed the name from Tampa Bay to Champa Bay … after winning top prizes in the NHL and NFL!!

Canada couldn’t hope to beat Champa Bay

    1. The ball team was pretty damn good for a few years as well. I watched their B squad beat the Jays a few years ago in the spring training season.

  17. It was fun while it lasted. As to pulling for a team because they’re from Canada? It’s not like wearing a mask. Still optional. I wouldn’t pull for the Leafs if they were the last team on earth and I’m sure many feel the same about the Canadiens. It’s sports. As it should be.

  18. Sorry, but the NHL just isn’t woke enough for me so I can’t watch.
Until they have at least an hour long pre-game show about how we should all hate whitey I just can’t watch them.
In fact they should skip showing the games entirely and just focus on why we need a race war.

They want us to be woke, I’ll be woke.

  19. If you want an antidote to all the PC blather tune in to Don Frye and Dan Severn’s Toxic Masculinity podcast on YouTube. And then have a cigar.

  20. How many Canadians spend all winter in, or around, Tampa? Why wouldn’t you expect them to root for the local team?

    1. msr, a friend of ours who lives in Tampa has been a fan from day one and now in her mid 80’s still goes to every game.

  21. Was a Habs fan for decades and now have not watched a hockey game in decades.

  22. I recently watched a documentary on the Battle of Quebec and it was kind of telling that they paved over the graves of Anglo soldiers who died there and drive over them every day in their cars while building a park and carefully maintaining the graves of the soldiers who fought for the French king and empire. It gave me more insight into why you guys despise them.

    1. Well, Anglos ran the country for centuries, and if they didn’t give a shit about their soldier’s graves, why should the Francos?

  23. Now that Hockey players and for that matter ALL PRO SPORTS players are apparently part of the Global ELITE…??

I will never from 16 months ago already give them assholes the time of day, the sweat off my balls nor a penny of my money.

GO Woke – you all can go broke.
Flames Jerseys up for sale if anyone is interested: 1 XL + 1 Med Official Reeboks (Kijiji Calgary). I hope this plug is ok..??

  24. I started not watching hockey, when six teams expanded. The only reason the Habs have such a collection of wins, is what they were up against during expansion. I got free tickets to go, because nobody wanted to watch a blowout of the New York Islanders, or Minnesota.

    1. Canadiens have won ten times since expansion and fourteen before. If feeding on expansion teams is the only reason for their success post 1967, however, what’s the Leafs’ excuse? Or the Rangers?

  25. 28 years and counting since a Canadian team won Lord Stanley’s mug. It mirrors the sharp decline in just about everything else in our country more generally (there’s probably a thesis in there).

From the first Stanley Cup in 1893 right up to 1993 American teams won only 26 cups. Now they’ve won 28 in a row. Up until the 1960s the NHL was 98% Canadian. Now it’s in the 40-45% range.

We can’t even dominate hockey anymore ffs. What else do we even have at this point?

It may be a minor thing in the big picture but the decline of hockey feels like a particularly symbolic piece of kindling on Canada’s growing funeral pyre.

    1. It’s just a question of money, like any other pro sport. Canadians are still over-represented althought there are plenty of US and European players. It’s just a business. The days of the local stars are gone. You could see that when they traded Gretzky to LA. Lemieux going to the Penguins, etc. Old history. That’s about the time I stopped watching. I’ve played hockey for about 40 years, love playing the game. I occasionally watch a game, especially the International Jr cup. I always root for the last Canadian team. My age? I am old enough to remember seeing Armstrong walk on the moon. But I am not old enough to remember the Leafs winning a Stanley cup!

  26. Modern Hockey is shit… a dumbed down game manufactured in Americas China owned university’s… the “new” NHL is simply a warmed over American College Hockey game where you can find the exact same level of excitement and the exact same skating on the perimeter hockey style action at your local ice rink by watching any random public skate. I do miss Canadian Hockey though, that was a tough game. Too bad its gone. I personally couldn’t care less about teams from the Post Nation State.
There’s more guys from BC on the Montreal Post Nation Statists then there are fwenchies… just sayin.

  27. “Injecting politics, moralizing lectures and mass conformity into every nanosecond of our existence. We can’t even enjoy the simple pleasure of watching a good hockey game in peace anymore.“

    This is a pointless post.

But in any event, everyone should support Quebec separatism. Especially non-Quebecois.

  28. I remember a conversation board on TSN when Vancouver was facing Boston in the finals. Most of the voices were that Boston was the true Canadian team (because Vancouver had a bunch of foreigners playing for them and Boston might be in the wrong country but had more Canadian players) so any true blooded Canadian would support Boston to win the cup. Never mind that it was the first Stanley Cup playoff for a Vancouver team in almost 100 years.

I stopped watching the NHL about a decade ago. Call the game the same way the whole season. If playoff hockey is more exciting, then call the game like it were the playoffs every game. Otherwise stop changing how you apply the rules and screwing the fans of the small market teams.

    1. To illustrate how fake the “new” NHL is these days look no further then the “rulebook” as they don’t actually referee games anymore, nope, now the games are, “managed”.
Remember hockey is all about “growing the game” in the USA and if that means destroying the traditions of the game and they way the game is played then so be it.
Nothing says “growing the game” like having arbitrary rules, or arbitrary management of the rules, just don’t talk about it.
I liked that story that came out earlier this year when a “referee” working for the NHL said outloud that he was “managing the game” when he gave an even up penalty to one of the teams he was “managing”… he was fired immediately for inadvertently telling everyone that the game is fixed, or sorry, I meant the game is “managed”. Hockey is now like politics, the fix is in.
