Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

What if the whole tribe are all Hawaiian, and not Native Americans after all? Will they have to give up their casino?
—————————–
“Two years ago, three Visalia (California) girls were orphaned when their parents were killed on a rural road by a suspected drunken driver.
Since the deadly collision, a bitter custody battle has ensued among their relatives, pitting a Visalia couple against members of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians in Placerville.
“The tribe contends the girls, ages 7, 5 and 4, belong with them because they are American Indians. The tribe has invoked the federal Indian Child Welfare Act, which gives preference to tribes in custody proceedings involving American Indian children.
“Now a strange twist has emerged – DNA tests show the girls have no Miwok blood. And documents in U.S. District Court in Fresno say members of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians might be imposters because their blood is Hawaiian, not Miwok.”

Think of the Poor Polar Bears Starving In China, er, Canada!
http://torontosun.com/news/national/canadian-photographers-video-of-emaciated-polar-bear-on-baffin-island-goes-viral/wcm/98c69d3d-2943-405a-9e18-0b24a27efdfb
“Stirling says he’s already witnessed polar bears who seem to have died of starvation (death by starvation can only be confirmed by autopsy), and has seen many others near death while working in the Norwegian arctic.”
So Stirling has no empirical evidence (no autopsy results) that exist that proves that this is starvation, and not some other underlying medical condition.
But hey, go with the global warming / climate change story, because that’s how you get research grants.
If I see the skeleton of a human lying in a desert, with an empty water barrel, I can just as easily claim the person died of over consumption of water and I have as much evidence as Stirling.
Remember how Greenpeace kept using the Photoshopped picture of a polar bear on a chunk of ice to promote their cause?
Is this any different, as we really don’t know why the polar bear is emaciated?
If indeed an animal was starving a few meters away from the camera crew that filmed the bear, the common sense thing to do would have been to throw the bear a chunk of meat, then observe the animal to find out if indeed starvation was the problem. I’ve seen coyotes frozen to death on the Saskatchewan prairie due to mange. Bison get struck by lightning, baby ducks get eaten by hawks. It’s a tough world out there. But I don’t believe that polar bear starved to death. It had a disease and they could have tried to get help. .
On this earth, we are, above all, the superior race.
And then there’s this malarkey:

I guess there aren’t enough dead people in Alberta that the NDP considers eligible to be voters.
The Rebel had a video on the subject by Sheila Gunn Reid on its main YouTube channel earlier today, but it seems to have been removed.
Every thing that lives eventually dies of something or other. Polar bears are apex predators in their habitat, so starving to death is a pretty normal end for them. They age out, can’t catch their prey or can’t compete with younger, stronger bears for hunting territory, and there are no retirement homes for polar bears where they can relax and drink Coke and tell stories to visitors from Greenpeace who bring them food. If they aren’t killed by competing predators (other polar bears, man) in the end they starve or die of something else because they are weakened by hunger because they are too old to hunt effectively.
With the UCP at around 50% in the polls, I think she’s history.
Some lefty sees a wild animal starving to death and they assume it’s from a cataclysmic planetary event. What pray tell do they think animals in the wild die from? Do they even realize that animals die in the wild?
Very sad video to be sure, but wild animals don’t die in hospital beds of old age with a morphine drip.
Now, apparently this guy is a biologist and has spent a fair bit of time up there. So he should know all this. Which leaves us with the realization that he, a member of the media, was using a lie to try and convert people to his religion. People had better be paying attention to what these “scientsts” are trying to sell.
Could this be a predictor of 150% turnouts at certain polling stations in an upcoming by-election? Watch the video.

So California’s Governor Jerry Brown is now blaming Trump for the wildfires? Pretty close when he says Trump’s decision to pull out of climate agreement could lead to more disasters.
A bold conclusion from York et al. (2016) is that, “it seems unlikely that polar bears (as a species) are at risk from anthropogenic global warming.”
92% of observed polar bear populations are stable or growing.
Maybe this is why Canadian tax dollars are being given away to foreign countries.

Donald Trump (rightly) calls out fake news on a Wa Po journalist who tweeted a photo of Trump’s rally in Florida showing many empty seats with the headline “packed house”. Turns out the photo was taken well before the rally began and in fact the rally was a packed house. A win for Trump.
Trump claimed (wrongly) at his rally that Canada enjoys a trade surplus with the USA and that is one reason to renegotiate NAFTA. Despite Trudeau’s claims that Canada has a trade deficit with the USA, there has been very little coverage of this in America. The fact is Canada has been in trade deficit with the USA (we import more from them than we export to them) continuously year over year since 1985. Because no one is picking up on this story, one can only conclude that Americans support the renegotiation of NAFTA, which won’t be good for Canada.

Canadians interested in how Alberta is getting screwed by America (AND Canada) should watch this video by David Prince of Harbinger Capital that appeared on BNN this past Friday.
1. Western Canada Select crude prices ($37/bl) are discounted almost 30% below West Texas Intermediate ($57)
2. Production in western Canada is at a record high
3. Heavy oil shipments to USA are at an all-time high (1.8 million bbls/day). Heavy oil is the oil that environmentalists hate and much of it is moved by rail car
4. US has record exports of heavy oil to China ($0.75 billion/mn)
There is a high demand for Canadian heavy oil and America is picking up the spread, pocketing the difference (minus shipping costs). The only way to solve this is to build a pipeline to the west coast and ship direct to China. Instead we are building more pipelines to the USA so they can increase their export of Canadian oil. And the only reason for this is Canadian politics.

Top 5 predictions from Elon Musk.
1. All forms of transport to become electric with 50% conversion within the next 10 years.
2. All vehicles to become fully automated within 20 years threatening millions of jobs.
3. Earthlings will land on Mars before 2025.
4. Tunnels will play a big role in the future of transportation.
5. Artificial Intelligence (AI) will take a lead role in Fake News, leading to World War 3.
My top 5 predictions
1. Electric vehicles are unlikely to ever represent more than 10% of vehicles.
2. As vehicles become fully automated, millions of lives will be threatened.
3. Earthlings won’t have the money to launch a trip to Mars, in breaking news, US President to World “Sorry we’re broke”.
4. Tunnels will be found to be easy targets for terrorism and very expensive to build in relation to surface infrastructure.
5. Some human scientist with a brain will announce that AI cannot self-improve beyond human intelligence (which is a limiting factor in AI development), that robots will never be self aware, and that a healthy human being without electronic implants is actually superior to a person (with a lot of money) who has elected to switch out their analog implants for digital ones.
And someone will ask “whatever happened to Google Glasses”?
Well said. I purchased and read both of Susan Crockford’s advertised on the left. The books are great and with none of Al’s and David’s malarky, and as well are written in such a way that young people can understand.
“The fact is Canada has been in trade deficit with the USA (we import more from them than we export to them) continuously year over year since 1985.”
Steve, the charts are confusing to a novice like myself but I believe you have read them wrong. The way I see it is that the negative numbers reflect a Canadian advantage, i.e. Canada exports more to the U.S. than Canada imports from the U.S.
I read it “Exports (from the U.S)” and “Imports (from Canada)” equals “Trade Balance (to the U.S.). If it is a negative number, it is a U.S. deficit.
I think Trump spoke correctly.

David, you read the data correctly, however, the charts only show the trade in goods. To get the full trade picture you need the data for trade in services which the US historically shows a large surplus. Here are the combined results for 2016 (US source).
https://ustr.gov/countries-regions/americas/canada
If you look at 2016 from Steve’s data you see a US deficit in Goods trade of just under $11-billion the Office of the US Trade Representative has the deficit in goodS at just over $12-billion but then shows a trade surplus in services of $24.6-billion creating a combined surplus in Goods & Services of $12-billion. The data pointed to by Steve does not contain the trade in services. Each side of the dispute is pulling the numbers which suit its case.
This is true but when people cite trade deficits or surpluses they typically are only referring to goods NOT services. And this trump is right and JT is wrong.

Balance of Trade includes Goods and Services unless you are referring to a subset such as Balance of Trade in Goods or Balance of Trade in Services. What you’re describing is the Merchandise Balance. People are generally specific about what they are referring to.

What’s this Frenchie’s name ?
Lots of voodoo in the calculation of “services”. Services are based on money flow …. or so they say.
The calculation of goods is “mostly” based on actual trade data for goods, something I can understand.
Apparently, if Canadian oil is carried by a U.S. train to the refinery in the U.S. and then refined in the U.S., these are services. If a U.S. made movie is shown in Canada, it’s a U.S. service. If you buy a computer with Windows on it, U.S. service. If you fly to Florida for the winter on American Airlines, U.S. service. And so on and so forth.
All stuff way above me so I conclude nothing from it …. that’s why we have trade negotiators, you know, “experts”.
One other thing jumped out at me was the calculation of employment for “goods” (1.6 million jobs) and employment for “services” (360 thousand jobs).
He tells me they are flat out here in AB and if your looking for work they’re hiring
I made several road trips to my house in northern B. C. this year as part of settling my father’s estate. I noticed that the region from Whitecourt to Grande Prairie was busy. During the summer, I heard numerous ads on the radio by firms looking for people in the GP area.
Even in B. C., there’s been a lot going on and I encountered quite a bit of oil industry traffic along the Alaska Highway.
Today I spoke to relatives from Rocky Mt. House Ab. That area has not seen any increase in business activity.
This must be a version of the old oilfield joke, ‘times are good for those who have work’.
It’s been that way in the Edmonton region for several years. Just before Red Rachel won the election, I chatted with a young chap who lived in my building. He was a trucker and he got stung by the downturn in the oil business.
One indicator of how things are is how much equipment is for sale. Every time I travel to my house in B. C., I pass by a yard owned by Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers, either the one east of Grande Prairie or the one close to the Edmonton International Airport. There’s usually a wide selection of trucks and machinery on display, much of which appears to be in good condition, at least from what I can see from the highway.
When business is good for firms like RBA, it’s probably bad for someone else.
