    A guy who never had the commercial success of many touring bands but he had the chops they never did and they knew it.

    Thanks for running this series, lance. I suspect one of the unintended consequences of forcing CanCon on people is a sub-conscious resistance to Canadian bands. We do have an unbelievably rich musical heritage given our relative youth and tiny size.

    idea that THEY preventabuse is nonsense.. Trey knows that those requesting unmasking were not restrained….
    ANYBODY COULD UNMASK ANYBODY.. End the FISA Court, or Jail the Judges that fail proper oversight

  17. Jerry Doucette was the first album I ever received as a kid. Mama Let Him Play came out in 78 and his 12 string still reverbs in my head. Saw him live here in Calgary inadvertently; dude can still really play.

    Why should it matter whether or not the performer is American, Brit, Canadian, or hails from Lower Sloblovia? If the listener likes what he hears he will buy it and if he doesn’t have to hear it 13 times a day on the radio so much the better.
    In terms of total sales and royalties earned from other artists recording his songs no Canadian singer/songwriter can come close to Gordon Lightfoot. Lightfoot was vocal in his criticism of cancon rules; he felt the constant playing of his songs to comply with the rules was hurting his career.
    I’m glad someone mentioned Long John Baldry.’Everything Stops For Tea’ still gets a listen at our house.

    (Back in the early Seventies I was in a record shop in Stockholm and was quite miffed to find a couple of Gord’s albums in the section labelled “AMERIKANSKOR ARTISTER”.)

  23. There are not many people who like a piece of music the first time they hear it. Can Con rules ensure that you hear it over and over and over and it eventually grows on you, sometimes like a fungus.

Nold – the reason cancon rules lead to the denigration of Canadian artists is that there are some truely bad (or at least not ready for prime time) acts that got a lot of airplay because they’re Canadian. Just like Canadian content on movie channels. “Why did they show that piece of crap?” “I don’t know, must be Canadian content.” and it usually was.
    When the bad items are automatically identified as Canadian but the world class songs are recognized as “good music you could hear anywhere”, that leads to the public discussion being less about those who are world class, but more discussion about “why are we forced to listen to/watch such crap only because it’s made in Canada?”
    It’s like the meaning of “everyone gets a trophy” sports days, it doesn’t mean that no-one wins, it means that getting a trophy loses its association with being the best.

    I suspect Paul Anka would have him beat several times over. In addition to “My Way”, “She’s A Lady”, and other hits he was co-writer of “This is It” for Michael Jackson and the theme song for The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

    Yup. During the 1970s, the Canadian radio stations I listened to played cover versions of songs that were popular south of the 49th parallel. And, yes, many of them were dreadful (I won’t mention any names).
    But here’s where the Cancon rules became completely stupid. The original recordings were available for sale in record shops, so why would anyone buy a copy of a mediocre cover version?
    Then in the evenings, due to propagation conditions, I could hear signals from American stations. I could easily listen to the original versions of those songs, so the Cancon rules were completely useless.
    As for the dreadful Canadian-made movies you referred to, I’m willing to bet that many of them were made as tax dodges.
