In 1989 I shipped off to Cornwallis for basic training.
When I got there, they gave me about $200 or so from the first paycheck to use at the CanEx to buy the supplies you will need to get through the first while of training. You’re left with about $15 or so after you fill the required list. I spent my last dollars on a Tom Petty cassette. It was Full Moon Fever.
Over the next few weeks I listened to that tape so many times. I Won’t Back Down became a personal theme song.
I sang it on the timed mile runs. I sang it running back from the field training. I sang it running up hills and over obstacles.
That was my song and it got me though.
This has been one very bad, no good, crappy day and I’m glad it’s over.

  2. Yes, too much bad news. As well Full Moon Fever was a fave as well, hard to believe it’s been 30 years since it was released.
    There are too many conflicting reports, but, things don’t look good for one of the Wilburys.

  5. If even half the story about Tom Petty is true he’s finished as a musician and quite likely a living being.
    He was a rare artist who transcended scorn in a world of snobby armchair critics. His four chords and great, simple melodies are quite timeless and had as broad a reach as Springsteen (or broader) but without the preachy overtones.
    While I wish for a recovery I’m not optimistic.

  6. Agreed Lance … an all around shittie day.
    Tom Petty wrote REAL music, with melody and rhythm that moves your feet and lyrics that move your soul. His songs spoke to our human condition. Being a little older than you, my lp of choice is Damn The Torpedos It was the soundtrack of my young adulthood, and the lp was remastered and reissued because of the masterpiece it was. Bernie Grundman’s studio did the remastering from the original analogue tapes. The lp was recorded at Studio City … made famous (again) by Dave Grohl’s great documentary about the studio. The lp was one of the last to be recorded in an actual studio, with real musicians, and smokes, and beer. If you haven’t seen “Studio City” you have to give it a watch. Damn the Torpedos was also produced by Jimmy Iovine … who did a guest stint on American Idol. In the Studio City documentary … Iovine said that he had to teach Petty and The Heartbreakers how to play their instruments and make a “real album”.

    The song speaks to me about one of my greatest girlfriends ever. And no … the song isn’t about being a loser, but how we sometimes get lucky in love. REALLY LUCKY in LOVE … and then it’s gone. “It couldn’t have been that easy to forget about me”. The fickle nature about relationships.

My husband was adding to our MP3 yesterday, and in the process, we talked about how prolific a songwriter and musician Tom Petty is (or was, apparently)…Quite a while ago, we watched a documentary on his life and music. He wrote so many of our favourites, unbeknownst to us. He was an incredible talent!

  19. A buddy and i had had the near-same experience, picking up several CDs at some flybown shop on an island in Thailand. We scored a Best of The Animals, a Pearl Jam, Rubber Soul, the soundtrack to the movie The Crow, and Wildflowers. The latter got played over and over and over again, and it stood up. Still does, in my opinion, and I’m not the hugest Petty fan. But that’s a classic in this house.

  28. Brilliant MUSICAL call ! I totally forgot that Petty was a Travelling Willbury … did he replace Roy Orbison after his passing (the empty rocking chair in the video)? How could I forget Petty singing the verses in that brilliantly-written song … except it is hard to compete with that gorgeous George Harrison chorus (love his voice) Damn! There’s some musical talent in that group. I have been rediscovering George Harrison’s unworldly guitar chops … all the way back to the EARLIEST Beatles lps. In my humble opinion, Harrison was a guitar genius by reinterpreting blues and jazz chops into this new art form called rock and roll. Mainly because I have “invested” in some amazingly engineered Japanese vinyl (and my killer analogue two-channel stereo rig) which reveals every note played by Harrison.

    Harrison was the MUSICAL genius behind the Beatles. Maybe not the songwriting genius … but the MUSICAL genius for sure. I believe the general public doesn’t give Harrison the credit he is due as a tip-top guitar virtuoso.
    BTW … I saw Tom Petty and Bob Dylan LIVE outdoors at Cal Expo in Sacramento (1986? … can’t recall the exact date). Two nasally singers that blended brilliantly together. It was one of the best concerts I ever saw/heard.

  31. I am confused. Was he a far left loon, or wasn’t he? Is he a Democrat or isn’t he? Did he not show up at an anti-Trump rally? So are they saying that Pollack is not the guy who did the shooting, or are they saying the details about his being far left are wrong? I believe this follow-up story is more confusing than the supposed ‘fake’ story.
    Another detail seems to be that he wired 100,000 to the Phillipines (maybe a week ago).
