    I saw it on TCM a year or so ago. I thought it was dreadful. I’ve seen some other of Stillman’s movies, which were equally as bad. He, quite frankly, is a lousy director.

    “It is henceforth impossible for the President to credibly condemn the racist and violent right-wing groups that comprised the only people responsible for provoking the violence in Charlottesville and the death of a woman hit by a car driven into a crowd of peaceful counterprotesters.”
    It is not true that the “right” were solely responsible for provoking violence. These leftist counter-protesters provoke and carry out violence at almost every rally they attend – as they did in this one. And the collectivist so-called “right” has far more in common with the communists on the left than with the libertarians, for example.
    Responsibility for the death of Ms. Heyer however belongs solely on the driver of the car that hit her.
    The editorial also claims that the alt-left are “the counterprotesters who marched for equality”. This is just shallow. The leftists claim to be for equality and against racism, but a complete analysis of the movement’s history and background reveals a number of racial attitudes and ulterior motives for their cause:
    “And while it is fair to critique the behaviour of some of the counterprotesters, to attempt, as Mr. Trump did, to equate people who carry torches and yell Nazi slogans – who call for an ‘ethno-state’, who refer to black people as ‘animals’, who are so viciously anti-Semitic – with the anti-racism advocates standing up to them is to be morally depraved.”
    One out of three ain’t bad. Have there not been “racialized” people on the left who have called for an “ethno-state”? Are there not people on the left who are “viciously anti-Semitic”? Yes to both.
    As for the “critique of the behaviour” of some counterprotesters, this violence gets a vague mention in one line of the editorial while the other side gets dozens. Will any of that “critique” make it onto the pages of the Globe, so that we can find out exactly who we are dealing with here?
    This editorial is empty virtue-signaling by the Globe and Mail. It is undeniable that racism is bad, but not everyone who opposes it is clean and pure themselves. There are plenty of reasons to criticize Donald Trump, including his expressed comments on Mexicans and yes, his cozying up to the “alt-right” if that is what he is doing. By all means continue to criticize, loudly. But to pretend the communist left isn’t behind the counterprotests and isn’t evil just because they oppose racism is morally depraved.
    Editorials like this help explain why people distrust the mainstream media.

  16. Well, prior to the Lincoln Douglas debates he stated that he thought the best solution for the black issue was to create a country in Africa and ship them all back to there. During the debates period (not in the debates)he stated that he thought blacks were inferior to whites and that they should not get the vote.
    That noted, there is no way we should have nothing but awe for the great man.

    It is not a “false moral equivalency” when the organizers of the counterprotests are dangerous extremists themselves. One can applaud them for opposing racism but for little else.
    Columns like this also help explain why the public distrusts mainstream media.

  21. You are right to take issue with that editorial. I read it at the local library. It was one of the most simple-minded pieces I have ever encountered in the Globe — just embarrassing (for them). Whatever has become of intelligent journalism in Canada? It is almost painful to pick up a newspaper these days. Thanks for rebutting their ignorance.

    Absolutely correct. A lot of regular people recognize that Trump is right to blame both sides for the violence. Did the Star mention the rocks, clubs and bags of urine that those counterprotestors had at the ready? Did they mention the $25 per hour that some of them were being paid to be part of “rent a mob”?
    I think the whole thing was set up by the left to undermine Trump and discredit Conservatives. In the mean time, no reasonable person would now dare to go to a protest that takes a stand against tearing down the statues, being aware that the left will ensure that Nazis and white supremacists show up to grab the headlines and Antifa to make sure the event turns violent. As a result, those statues are being dismantled everywhere. We can thank the left for this wanton destruction of heritage. The US (and Canada) are no longer places that value free speech. It is not surprising that Ezra’s planned debate on free speech has nowhere to go.

    Let’s face it folks, Trump is being killed one stab at a time. The Julius Caesar New York production had it right, Trump is being assassinated by increments, and the left has started a civil war.
    Here in Canada, the CPC is becoming a liberal lite party. The power of the Laurentian Elite is forcing Sheer et al to move left. Anyone on the right is being done away, one cut at a time. SunTV is gone and it will be a miracle if the Rebel does not succumb. No media right of center will be left as the National Post has mostly Liberal writers, and it appears that there are no conservative politicians left as they have been cowed into bowing, scrapping, and kneeling to the Laurentian Elite.
    George Soros and Saul Alinsky are winning.

    In any event, Charlotteville wasn’t a Canadian tragedy. Add to that the fact that the Rebel Media seems to be busting at the seams, and I think it would be wise for all of us to sit back and breathe easy. I can also relate to Scheer not wanting to talk to he Rebel Media until he finds out the real story on why Levant is having so many problems. .
    Leftists are like children at a playground. Today it’s the swings, tomorrow it’s the see-saw, and in the afternoon they’ll be going down on the slide.
    Be patient.

    When you step back and look at who actually departed, it was one full timer and three very part timers. In the end, Lilley looked like he was mailing it in anyway. Often unshaven and very casual, he wasn’t producing the ‘one video a day’ he claimed, more like two or three a week. Barbara Kay put out perhaps a video a month, and the history nerd, maybe one per week.
    What bothered me with Lilley was his attempt to bring down the ship when he departed. Although not much of a presence when he left, he was there at the start, and was involved in lots of fundraising. He tried to make worthless the contributions of those that he solicited from. What reeks of hypocrisy was that Lilley has made a career of trying to destroy the CBC (which I agree with), and yet he appeared on the CBC in his cross Canada media tour trying to destroy one of the single, dependable, conservative voices in Canada. In all three cases, they should have quietly departed, as they knew that the liberal media would otherwise pick up on their departures and use it as ammunition to discredit The Rebel, which is exactly what happened.
    Faith Goldy? Damn. It’s like throwing out the baby with the bathwater, although I 100% agree with Levant’s decision to let her go. Very talented lady, but she crossed the line. Even if she sympathized with some aspects of the extreme right agenda (and there are some SMALL aspects that I agree with as well – just like I could admire Mussolini’s ability to make the trains run on time or Hitler’s Autobahn highway building program), she had to know there were certain ‘third rails’ that just can never be touched in polite company.
    As far as the extortion thing…bad timing. I’ve been through something similar with an ex-employee who held company secrets. I can understand, in this political climate, why Levant would not want a rouge ex-employee saying he was doing bad things, even if Levant had nothing to hide. Most recognize that YouTube does not come close to paying the bills, and that Levant has to use multiple revenue streams to be sustainable. It was clear to me when his team went to Israel or Iraq, there was a profit motive. He can’t pay his bills with ‘prayers and best wishes’. Even the Rebel Cruise was a fund raising opportunity.
    In summary, Ezra has built a strong base with subscriber revenue that should keep things going for awhile. He has a lists of hundreds of thousands of emails that he will be able to monetize.
    He needs to hire, or develop through his farm system, two or three strong video talents like Sheila Gunn Reid. He also needs to produce regular free content himself for a few months to draw eyeballs back.
    From my home in Mexico, I remain firmly on the side of The Rebel.
    (And…..Kate needs to take away Lilley’s posting privileges on SDA. The man is a self-serving cancer.)

  26. I should add, I understand why the three part-timers (Kay, Lilley and the nerd) resigned. They have reputations to protect, and primary jobs that are required to pay the bills. God Forbid that they should be accused of breathing the same air as someone who rubbed shoulders with the wrong people in Virginia.
    And further…the Muslim invasion in Europe and the current ‘refugee’ crisis at our borders is very uncomfortable to highlight and expose. For many, it’s easier to sit back and ignore it (until the consequences of doing so blow up in your face or run you over). For a MSM type, I can understand the decision to protect the steady paycheque by ignoring the issue and shunning those that do…less they be accused of being a ‘rasis’ and get replaced by someone more politically correct.

    This speech was in 1858. Lincoln was both a man of his times (a realist) yet a man of principle and a man who looked into the future as well. His position on slavery and the fate of the black man in the U.S. was an evolving one. His Emancipation Proclamation was in 1863. It then becomes a matter of speculation as to what he would have done in 1865 had he not been assassinated.

    President Grant advocated buying the Dominican Republic and relocating black people there (it was entirely possible to do so at the time). He did not advocate this being a different country but rather a new state in the Union, a black state.

    The Rebel is an essential news outlet. Levant is faced with a tough balancing act of having enough provocative content to draw audience versus alienating core subscribers. His content tends to be repetitive at times. He could dwell on more background stories to provide information. All these wants require money however. As the majority of MSM sink into the red I can imagine that the Rebel also has the $ challenge.
    I have faith in Ezra Levant. From the time he stepped aside for Stephen Harper to take his safe seat in Calgary he has been a straight shooter. To an extent I thought Harper let down SUN TV by not providing exclusive interviews or ensuring their access to broadcast rights equal to progressive media. The CPC should have been able to manage the SUN offer into a viable conservative voice. It should have been one of their biggest priorities while in government and they failed miserably.
    Kulak has confidence in Scheer. I am conservative with libertarian leanings. As a old Reformer I see nothing in the conservative movement to be terribly excited about. Turdeau took power how long ago? I have seen little effort by the CPC on the national level to actually address why the Party lost and how their message, if they have one, is being sent to members. My riding which was a Reform/CPC bulwark remains in kaos. 1780 members down to 400. No communication. No consultation. No initatives.
    The conservative movement act like neophytes. They do not appear to be able to write a business plan let alone execute it.

  37. It took the Globe and Mail several hours to report that it was Muslims who were responsible for the attack yesterday, whereas less biased media outlets were reporting that fact as soon as it was known.
    And of course they don’t say “Muslims” which is what they should say if they want to be honest. Instead they use the politically correct “Islamist militant”. Cowards.

    Well said. I was disappointed when Maxime Bernier lost the leadership bid but saw Scheer say some agreeable things soon after so I took some consolation in that. That optimism has since faded.
    Scheer and co. have since wavered on their climate stance and more recently on free speech. If the only way the CPC is differentiating itself from the Liberals is by calling for balanced budgets then I’m out; but where do I go?
    Here in BC, Christie Clark has resigned virtually guaranteeing a full term for the NDP who have already crushed industry, (pipeline, Site C in question) and are raising the minimum wage. In Saskatchewan, the last bastion of conservatism leadership, Brad Wall has called it quits. In Ontario things are looking up for a CPC movement but they’re CINOs. Now, the only source for non-progressive stories on Canadian topics is crumbling before our eyes.
    Not a great month and the future ain’t so bright either.

    Exactly! I turned 75 three weeks ago and am afraid that I will continue to see an ever increasing stranglehold by George Soros et al on our society. Sorry to be so pessimistic, but I have been watching this slowly happening over decades and now at a breakneck speed. I have twelve grandchildren and it appears that they will live under a regime similar to that my grandfather lived in in Russia.

I don t actually know how I ended up there, but they are featuring a story with pictures of some Canadian individuals who attended the event in Charlottesville. I think that is a shocking invasion of privacy. Isn’t this exactly the same crap that went on in Nazi Germany — reporting on neighbors. Anyone might attend the Charlottesville event out of curiosity. As long as they were not troublemakers, they should not be given this type of exposure. In today’s environment people could lose their jobs. I am appalled. The left is pushing Canada towards fascism and totalitarianism and sowing further division. The left is all about group think. Canadians must wake up quickly.

    You’re right on that. As for Scheer, I don’t believe he ever dreamed he was going to be the elected leader. I do however believe that, given the political climate that is leading up to the next fed election, he will be a much better choice as PM than Trudebt.
    Keeping in mind that the Alberta election is not all that far away, and hopefully, a victory should give the Western conservative movement the boost we badly need.
    Our enemies are the leftist presstitutes. Not Andrew Scheer. I was stuck at home with a slight knee injury last week. I watched CTV news channel; I can’t believe the 24-7 attack on Trump, and anything that resembles Conservative politics.
    I also watched a series on the Cdn. History channel on Detroit’s big three. I don’y know who controls the programming. However I was nauseated by their falsifications surrounding Henry Ford and his company. The program, a three night special, praised the auto unions, totally disregarding the fact that Detroit was riddled with organized criminals who wanted to get their claws into the profits of the big three by controlling the unions. The list is endless with reasons as to why Detroit fell apart, and trust me that it wasn’t Henry Ford and his family who caused it. They (History Channel) may want to investigate the corrupt leftist officials who ran the city.
