If you were online at all on Sunday you would have been hard pressed to not see the reaction to Merkel’s comments about not being able to rely on the US and UK.
Relax. The blue check-mark brigade on Twitter are once again going ape over their apparent belief that Trump is going to dissolve NATO or some such nonsense.
Merkel is in the middle of an election. The Germans vote in late September. She currently has a slight majority. She leads what some would call a centre-right party. The only other party in real contention is a centre-left party. She needs another mandate to increase the defence budget to meet NATO commitments.
She’s playing domestic politics, but the Frums, Wills and other TDS retweeters (looking at you Andrew Coyne) either don’t know that or don’t want you to know that.

I think back to the 1990s when the goose-steppers were worried about the 2 million ethnic Germans that were leaving Russia. They were restricting the number that could immigrate each year. They truly hate their own people.

Just as every politician to the right of Frau Merkel is described as “far right” or “neo-Nazi” … I believe that Frau Merkel needs to be consistently described as “EAST German born and raised Merkel” … or … “former Communist Merkel” … or … “totalitarian Communist Dictator Merkel”. Or … I will just settle for “Anti Western culture Frau Communist Merkel”.
You all can say what you want about Merkel and where on the political spectrum you think her party is, but there isn’t a snowballs chance of Germany moving any further right. Be careful what you wish for.
If you describe Merkel’s party as leftists, imagine the only other alternative.
Because she has a five seat majority right now and the left is almost back to even in the polls.

Germany began importing Moslems more than fifty years ago. If there was a government in Bonn or Berlin that tried to stop the flow during the intervening period, please refresh my memory.

If there are no electable alternatives (or ones that stand a chance) to Merkel on the right, then what is the problem with a turn to the hard left? The oncoming disaster is inevitable- the only question is to how fast it happens and how hard. If it comes slowly with Merkel, it will take longer, and be much more severe. A short, sharp, and immediate shock may just save Germany.

Agreed, however, it’s not really an issue of right or left … as much as it is a struggle for borders, language, and culture. Frau Merkel is convinced there is still another “Berlin Wall” that needs to torn down. The German border … and every other border of the EU member nations … if not the entire world. Germany is clearly also majority stupid; they keep electing her. They want energy poverty; they voted for it. They want Christmas market terrorism; they voted for it. They want rape gangs; they voted for them. Germany refuses to vote for anyone who is sane; so where they are, is where they want and deserve to be.
