The United States carried out a missile attack in Syria on Thursday night in response to the Syrian government’s chemical weapons attack this week that killed more than 80 civilians, American officials said.
Dozens of Tomahawk missiles were fired at an air base in Syria, military officials said.
[…] The speed with which the Trump administration responded — and remarks earlier in the day by American officials who said that options were still being considered — appeared intended to maximize the element of surprise and sharply contrasted with the methodical scrutiny of the use of force by the Obama administration.
Broader commentary from Michael Ledeen and Glenn Reynolds: THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY
You are missing a couple of things. One, the judges who stepped on trumps executive order were allowed to do so by Trump. They have no legal authority to do what they did and are in violation of American law. Two, as commander in chief he has the authority to declare all out war if he wishes, any judge that attempted to try and restrict that particular constitutional reality would very quickly find him or herself in jail for treason.
This strike was theatre for American domestic audiences. Trump had to be seen doing something, so he did this.
Assad killling “beautiful babies” for years with conventional weapons — no problem, in fact, let’s ban Syrian refugees indefinitely. Assad killing “beautiful babies” with sarin gas — “that crosses many, many lines, beyond a red line, many, many lines.”
Fine, but runways can be rebuilt, and chemical weapon stockpiles can be relocated. So the question is, what now? Either this was a one-off bit of showmanship, in which case Assad goes right back to killing Syrian non-combatants (with aid from Russia), or the US follows through on this initial action by getting more involved in the Syrian conflict. Neither option is particularly appealing.
Welcome to the real world, President Trump. Remember back in 2013, when it was easy to play Armchair President? http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/donald-trump-syria-tweets-old-2013-stay-out-of-many-bad-things-will-happen-a7671561.html
Agreed. Nothing passes the smell test, here. ISIS (or other big Islamist groups) benefit by maintaining chaos … I’d peg them as more likely to be behind these attacks than a (suicidal?) Assad or Putin (what possible benefit could it bring the Russians to have the Americans defy them in their newly acquired Syrian bases?). There’s a lot more going on here than the media is willing – or able – to tell us.
I have reserved seats on the anti-carbon tax and the anti-trudeau bandwagons, I don’t have issues with Jews. However, Israel would benefit by prompting America to take action against Syria with a staged event, it wouldn’t be the first time Israel staged an event.
I have equal suspicions that the islamic state rebels may be responsible for the attack. Should I get off the anti-islamic state bandwagon too?
Have weapons, will use.
Good for Trump.
“as commander in chief he has the authority to declare all out war if he wishes”
War Powers
Congress holds the power to declare war. As a result, the president cannot declare war without their approval. However, as the Commander in Chief of the armed forces, many presidents have sent troops to battle without an official war declaration (ex. Vietnam, Korea). The 1973 War Powers Act attempted to define when and how the president could send troops to battle by adding strict time frames for reporting to Congress after sending troops to war, in addition to other measures.

Evidence seems to point to air delivery of the chemicals. It is all murky, but some credible people have said this was Syrian gov.
Glad there was no promise of boots on the ground. Let these savages murder each other.
The savagery of the Syrisn civil war proves Trump is exactly right in banning indiscriminate Syrian immigration to the US.
“This “Gas Attack” is just too photogenic and such perfect timing.”
Amazing how they decided to treat the people in the middle of the street in the presence of professional quality video cameras. I guess journalists just happened to be walking by a civilian street where no violence was expected to happen.
I know nothing of the following website.
“U.N. independent commissioner Carla Del Ponte said yesterday that Syrian rebels have used sarin gas.”
https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2013/05/what-does-sarin-do-to-people/275577/
Part of the rebel armies consist of Syrian soldiers that deserted with their arms which 4 or 5 years ago included nerve gas. Syria is supposed to have surrendered its gas. Have the rebels.
“No congressional authorization = illegal.”
Did you inherit your stupid or work hard to develop it? Congress declares war – anything less is up to the president but then you knew that.
Somehow I suspect this show of strength (aka hair trigger) is likely aimed at the mad mullahs of Iran and Kin Jong (Tweet Tweet) Un of North Korea more than Assad of Syria. I still maintain that IF it was a sarin gas attack and not just a photo op it was the rebels or ISIS that used or misused the gas and not something that was dropped by the Syrian or Russian bombers. Is it even possible to drop a sarin gas bomb and if so how wide would the path of destruction be?
….LEADERSHIP!
The real world is the one Obama created – a total mess. Don’t blame Trump for it. He didn’t start it.
Being a fan of decisive action, I am sure you approve of how Trump crushed the Democrats on the Gorsuch nomination?
1. 1939 – German radio station on the Polish border
2. Early 1960s – Gulf of Tonkin
3. Iraq – “baby milk factory”
4. Gas attack – says who? By whom? And now an attack without a declaration of war by Congress as per Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution.
Dead baby scam never seems to get tired. https://electronicintifada.net/blogs/ali-abunimah/how-cnn-helped-spread-hoax-about-syrian-babies-dying-incubators
War Powers Act – if the president needed to send the troops to other countries for emergency reasons, approved statutes required the notification of Congress within forty-eight hours. For any time beyond sixty days, further congressional approval was required.
Trump has the power and there is no reason to believe he will not fully comply. The US lost 37,000 troops in Korea and 58,000 troops in Vietnam without a declaration of war. It is unlikely that the US will ever declare war.
Hey, you forgot the 1929 Wall Street Crash, the Lindbergh kidnapping, the Hindenburg disaster, the JFK assassination, the Oklahoma City and Waco false flag ops, Bush and Cheney’s covert 9/11 detonations and the fake Boston Marathon bombing!
“We’re through the looking glass here, people.”

This is all FAKE News … because John Fitzgerald Kerry (JFK) successfully, peacefully, and diplomatically … REMOVED 100% of ALL chemical weapons from Syria. JFK proudly proclaimed his success … and the American Press cheered his brilliance …
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/04/06/politifact-retracts-mostly-true-ruling-that-us-removed-100-percent-syrias-chemical-weapons.html
Good thing we have TRUTHER websites like Politifact and Snopes
So Turdeau promised $840 million Canadian taxpayer dollars for 100 dead Syrians, I wonder how many extra Syrian “Refugees” he’ll bring in after this.
Canadians should just give Canada to the ME and walk away, it’d be faster & easier.
It does not matter who actually ordered the chemical attack, or if a dwarf from NK was flying the plane. Assad was responsible, is responsible for ALL facets of the civil war. He is, at a minimum, complicit by his failure..
Trump only has seconds to respond to a Nuclear attack.. He has the constitutional Power & will…Get your heads out of your congressional rectums of self importance…An act of Congress does not trump the constitution…Only Chicago street punks do drive by shootings and run away….
If you are not part of the Solution… You are the problem.. that includes Putin
Your claim about Assad being responsible for the “civil war” is not valid. For starters, it is not really a civil war. Most rebels are from other countries.
Wonder what would happen if someone loosed a planeload of wild boar (just the males) in the general area of ISIS.
The strike shows that Trump has a heart. He has a back bone. He has a calculating mind. And he is a decisive leader. The oval office chair is no longer empty.
Live from Damascus: The Syrian Election Results – Global Research, April 18, 2016
“Tuesday’s Syrian election was a vote of confidence by the Syrian people in their government. 5,085,444 voters cast their ballots out of a possible 8,834,994 eligible voters.
The overall participation rate of 58% (virtually identical to Canada’s last federal election) exceeded the government’s expectations in most places but was low in others.”
“…Also significant was the fact that over 140,000 refugees returned across the Lebanese border in just one day in order to vote.”

Hillary agrees with Trump; Syria should be bombed

Further to my comment yesterday to all the pundits posting their hair-brained, half-assed theories here about the American action yesterday, here is something to throw into your equations. In order for law and order to be established and recognized there has to be an understanding that there will be an eventual reconning of justice. For that to happen there must be a force that can administer both the force and the delivery of justice. In other words for law and order to exist there must be a ‘police’ force and a judiciary system implemented by common consent. Through-out global history there has been a form of common consent law and order implemented by the strongest nation of the time. Pax Romana, Pax Britannica, and Pax Americana, as examples, like them or not, are a fact of history. After WWII it was decided that the UN would assume the role of the strongest nation and implement the rule of the globalization super-power. This was done under the auspices of the United States as they were paying the bills for the costs. We have been living under this agreement for a number of years, and are now realizing that it doesn’t work. Since the Americans have abdicated their role of ‘policeman’ we have seen an increase in global instability and now with this ‘bust’ in Syria we may be seeing America re-establishing Pax Americana. It has been under assault for many years, both internally and externally, but now we may be seeing a re-emergence. We live in Hope!
This is getting weirder
Hillary said Syria should be bombed
She actually agrees with Trump
It is on CNN international, I tried to post the link but the page went bezerk
anyway the fact Hillary agrees with Trump makes it more difficult to understand why Trump hit Syria with 50 missiles
hate him or love him, how come Hillary and him agree Syria should be bombed?
what do they know that we don’t?
“Live from Damascus: The Syrian Election Results – Global Research, April 18, 2016”
Elections in the Middle East can be iffy but there is no doubt that Assad is the popular ruler of Syria. He has to keep together a divided country. Obama’s friends, the religious fanatics, are trying to overthrow him, as are the ISIS butchers and the Turks hate him.
Assad has a lot more support in Syria than Trump has in the US. Most of the refugees from Syria are families escaping the rebels or single men escaping the draft.
You can set your watch by these mendacious mediocracy morons.
Tell me Chris, are you sure it was racism or sexism, rather than just a diversion from the Trump-Russia witch hunt?
Too bad for the Dems the witch has been found and her name is Elizabeth Warren. Oh wrong witch? Maybe, but unlike the Russian one, she’s for real.

Yup, Hillary, Pelosi, Obamba and the Huffington Post are overjoyed today – checkout MSNBC and all the other fake news networks………
Sample:
“Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi endorse Trump’s attack in Syria”

I don’t know what Obambas “Arab Spring” taught so many “conservatives” since 2011 but it sure doesn’t seem to be STOP agreeing with the f*cking Progressive Left on everything.
When Polosi say’s right, know that it’s wrong!
Well way to go Trump loyalists, you are now on the same bus as McCain, Graham, and the Clintons.
Enjoy the ride.
If this goes on And USA throws its weight around.there might be a union pf Russia and China They are of the same faith and have lots of spare civilians.
Whereas the USA goes faint id a dozen of theirs get killed.
I heard Boy Wonder respond to a question in Parliament today. He just repeated the US party line that all Western NATO members did, retaliation (literaly) for gassing the kids.
As if it is proven who gassed what and with whata and when. False flag operations are almost like a NATO make-work program. Remember Sarajevo, Kosovo?
What I do want to know is why we are always bombing the wrong side.
Trump showed he has balz…
Heh, so long as he has someone to do his fighting for him…like all leaders, leads from behind.
No he isn’t, it was the stupid US goaded “Arab Spring” which is the proximate cause.
Robert of Ottawa >
Yes, those 100 gassed foreign “kids” just cost Canadians a promised $842 Billion dollars out of pocket. It’ll be allot more once the substitute drama teacher promises their friends and family free room & board along with all the Health Care they can stomach.
JT will be the new “Merkel of the North”, only she has a few brains albeit mentally ill ones, and probably doesn’t smoke the weed preferring prescriptions.

It is political suicide not to agree with Trump… You would be agreeing to Kill Babies with poison gas.. They are holding their breath waiting for Trump to fail (and they hate the fact that Obama failed) Hillary will have a new reason why she lost.. YES! it was because OBAMA was following George Soros & the EU/UN
Rand Paul & Maxine Waters want to form a bi-partisan Dumb & Dumber War caucus.. Hillary wants to profit from Syrian refugees. She owes UN members who paid her for access…
“America re-establishing Pax Americana. It has been under assault for many years, both internally and externally, but now we may be seeing a re-emergence. We live in Hope!” Antenor
Yep! the UN is on Notice.. If they are not part of the solution.. they are the problem that has failed on every task.. Greedy bunch of free loaders.
If we get into a Nuclear war the one place that I will be safe is anywhere in the USA, not so safe in Russia or China
If Putin does not put on his big boy pants, Trump will spank him.. in front of all of Russia
Heh, what’s another $100,000,000 in missiles down the drain…anyway, Raytheon is happy.

“If we get into a Nuclear war the one place that I will be safe is anywhere in the USA,….”
I think that you should maybe study up on the effects of an all out nuclear war.
Otherwise, what do you seriously think an all out war with Russia, China, Iran would look like sitting in a country that has had Open Borders for the last 50 years?
Do you seriously think that all of the countries listed above have been sitting around waiting for a tit-for-tat cross-ocean war with the US? Or maybe they have moved in assets you never dreamed about all over the US from China Town Everywhere to Little Mosque on the Prairie, waiting for a trigger.
Dirty Bombs in shopping malls to forest fires in high density populated areas and then more nasty tricks than most people could imagine is what a war with those countries will look like in the US. Bank on it.
Don’t over think this and look to the obvious.
After eight years of empty threats someone wanted to test the waters to see if empty threats where going to continue. Last night they got their answer.
Trump has as Stephen Harper predicted about a month ago, upended decades of US foreign policy.
PMSH proven right yet again.
You may recall Bill Clinton bombing a paint factory in Africa that turned out to be… well a paint factory. No congressional approval, no big protests, and he hit a civilian target. This is a brilliant strategic move and will reset the tone of activity in the Middle East, in Moscow, on the Korean Peninsula and likely somewhere around the Philippines. I find it rather poetic Trump was dining with Xi as the missiles pounded into that base.
What the f*uck are you on about now you dyslexic retard?
UnoMe >
UnoMe what do you think about Turdeau giving $842 Billion tax dollars in “Humanitarian Aid” for 100 dead foreign people in Syria?
Your ad-hominem attacks do not advance your arguments. In fact they serve to render them meaningless. just because others don’t agree with your post you call them names.
Brilliant, Rand and the HFC should be taking legal advise from you for sure…
How in any way does this divert from destroying ISIS? Does nothing to stop that. Of course if your suggesting Assad should be given free reign to murder his citizens well, your on your own there partner.
viktor >
“In fact they serve to render them meaningless”
UnoMe has always had meaningless and hypocritical “arguments”.
“You should have read SDA last week, where UnoMe “Progressively” blasted the use of Confederate flags on US public property due to historical links with Human Rights abuses, BUT then defended Canadian alliances via trade and selling off Canadian assets to communist China. (The worlds #1 Human Rights abuser). China gets to fly it’s Human Rights abusing flag on Canadian public property.
Obviously todays “Confederate Culture” is the just wrong color for UnoMe.
I do not see the sense of removing Asssd. You would only be replacing him with some other crazy stupid fool. That is how it works in the ME. Best thing is to not be arming rebels.

You nailed it, and summed it up in a nutshell.
