  1. You are missing a couple of things. One, the judges who stepped on trumps executive order were allowed to do so by Trump. They have no legal authority to do what they did and are in violation of American law. Two, as commander in chief he has the authority to declare all out war if he wishes, any judge that attempted to try and restrict that particular constitutional reality would very quickly find him or herself in jail for treason.

  2. This strike was theatre for American domestic audiences. Trump had to be seen doing something, so he did this.
    Assad killling “beautiful babies” for years with conventional weapons — no problem, in fact, let’s ban Syrian refugees indefinitely. Assad killing “beautiful babies” with sarin gas — “that crosses many, many lines, beyond a red line, many, many lines.”
    Fine, but runways can be rebuilt, and chemical weapon stockpiles can be relocated. So the question is, what now? Either this was a one-off bit of showmanship, in which case Assad goes right back to killing Syrian non-combatants (with aid from Russia), or the US follows through on this initial action by getting more involved in the Syrian conflict. Neither option is particularly appealing.

  3. Agreed. Nothing passes the smell test, here. ISIS (or other big Islamist groups) benefit by maintaining chaos … I’d peg them as more likely to be behind these attacks than a (suicidal?) Assad or Putin (what possible benefit could it bring the Russians to have the Americans defy them in their newly acquired Syrian bases?). There’s a lot more going on here than the media is willing – or able – to tell us.

  4. I have reserved seats on the anti-carbon tax and the anti-trudeau bandwagons, I don’t have issues with Jews. However, Israel would benefit by prompting America to take action against Syria with a staged event, it wouldn’t be the first time Israel staged an event.
    I have equal suspicions that the islamic state rebels may be responsible for the attack. Should I get off the anti-islamic state bandwagon too?

    Congress holds the power to declare war. As a result, the president cannot declare war without their approval. However, as the Commander in Chief of the armed forces, many presidents have sent troops to battle without an official war declaration (ex. Vietnam, Korea). The 1973 War Powers Act attempted to define when and how the president could send troops to battle by adding strict time frames for reporting to Congress after sending troops to war, in addition to other measures.

    Part of the rebel armies consist of Syrian soldiers that deserted with their arms which 4 or 5 years ago included nerve gas. Syria is supposed to have surrendered its gas. Have the rebels.

I still maintain that IF it was a sarin gas attack and not just a photo op it was the rebels or ISIS that used or misused the gas and not something that was dropped by the Syrian or Russian bombers. Is it even possible to drop a sarin gas bomb and if so how wide would the path of destruction be?

  26. Further to my comment yesterday to all the pundits posting their hair-brained, half-assed theories here about the American action yesterday, here is something to throw into your equations. In order for law and order to be established and recognized there has to be an understanding that there will be an eventual reconning of justice. For that to happen there must be a force that can administer both the force and the delivery of justice. In other words for law and order to exist there must be a ‘police’ force and a judiciary system implemented by common consent. Through-out global history there has been a form of common consent law and order implemented by the strongest nation of the time. Pax Romana, Pax Britannica, and Pax Americana, as examples,like them or not, are a fact of history. After WWII it was decided that the UN would assume the role of the strongest nation and implement the rule of the globalization super-power. This was done under the auspices of the United States as they were paying the bills for the costs. We have been living under this agreement for a number of years, and are now realizing that it doesn’t work. Since the Americans have abdicated their role of ‘policeman’ we have seen an increase in global instability and now with this ‘bust’ in Syria we may be seeing America re-establishing Pax Americana. It has been under assault for many years, both internally and externally, but now we may be seeing a re-emergence. We live in Hope!

    Elections in the Middle East can be iffy but there is no doubt that Assad is the popular ruler of Syria. He has to keep together a divided country. Obama’s friends, the religious fanatics, are trying to overthrow him, as are the ISIS butchers and the Turks hate him.
    Assad has a lot more support in Syria than Trump has in the US. Most of the refugees from Syria are families escaping the rebels or single men escaping the draft.

  42. You may recall Bill Clinton bombing a paint factory in Africa that turned out to be… well a paint factory. No congressional approval, no big protests, and he hit a civilian target. This is a brilliant strategic move and will reset the tone of activity in the Middle East, in Moscow, on the Korean Peninsula and likely somewhere around the Philippines. I find it rather poetic Trump was dining with Xi as the missiles pounded into that base.
