The Sound Of Settled Science

The more I learn, the more I am convinced that 9 out of 10 “experts” are just making shit up.

The Reproducibility Project: Cancer Biology aims to replicate 50 top cancer papers. The complete results are not yet in, in fact, the corresponding authors of most of the articles to be wholly or partially replicated have only been contacted for details and clarifications concerning the protocols of their experiments. The Reproducibility Project will only publish the final results of the 50 replications by the end of 2017!
Previous attempts at replicating cancer biology experiments indicated that reproducibility ranges from a dismal 10% to the very disappointing rate of 25%. These results mean that at least 75% of the money spend on cancer biology produces press releases rather than bona fide useful results.
Be that as it may, the people whose articles and experiments have been chosen for replication are up in arms. In an article in Science, their reactions are described as ranging “from annoyance to anxiety to outrage.”

  1. You know you are going to fed a banquet of BS if you read or
    hear “Studies show that…..”
To show just how stupid some of this crap is, I was on my
way to work more than 20 years ago. To show you just how
memorable this was, I was transitioning from the northbound
Harbor Freeway to the eastbound Artesia Freeway. Some AM
talk show host played an audio clip from some woman with a
degree in Cultural Anthropology or some such
This Alberta Einstein stated that the reason humans fear
reptiles is because of our negative “Experiences” with
    dinosaurs. Let that sink in!
Today, science is so polluted by politics, that I would have
to check the toilet bowl if anyone with a college degree told
me the color of crap was brown! If science had not been so
thoroughly corrupted, we would still have DDT, PCB’s, CFC’s,
Asbestos, a whole host of chemical solvents, and that
bitchin’ butter substitute they used to use on popcorn
    at the movie theaters!
I am surprised that the numbers are not even worse than this
    story suggests.

  2. That is a cbcpravda special headline
    Studies show
    Critics say
    Harper regime
    Harper blasted
    Omar released!!

  3. Heh.
    Follow the money.
It is increasingly obvious that damping the free enterprise that produces the wealth is directly proportional to the scamming “scientists” blaming the same for all the ills of the world.
Of course with the deceitful support of the media cartel

  4. When something is being sold on the basis of “expert” “consensus” you can be sure there is no consensus and the source is far from expert. We have been scammed for decades with “expert opinion” – it gave us safe substances like thalidomide, hydrogenated oils, asbestos insulation, Vioxx, fluoride, aspartame and trans-fats.
Expert consensus also told us Butter, eggs, salt and raw cane sugar were sudden death dietary poisns and have recently found them to be miracle natural foods.
Expert consensus told us the polar ice would be in our living rooms by now if we weren’t all dead by radiation coming though the ozone hole or freezing from the peak oil shortage.

  5. That’s why I wouldn’t touch the Cancer Society or any of its many competitors — Breast, Prostate, Ovarian…. — with a ten-foot pole. My charitable efforts go to Sleeping Children Around the World: no overhead, small, measurable goals.

  6. I remember seeing this years ago:
    What is an expert?
    X = unknown quantity;
    spurt = drip under pressure;
    “X spurt”

  7. The somatic mutation model of cancer as a genetic disease is on its last legs. The tumor genome project has discovered that tumours have thousands of genetic mutations within a single tumour and different mutations in different cells, essentially disproving somatic mutation as the driver in a single germ line of the cancer. Little wonder results are hardly reproducible, since the underlying paradigm is flawed. Nuclear DNA mutations are apparently downstream effects of metabolic impairment due to weakened mitochondria.
Studies designed to take into the account of the possibility of cancer as a metabolic disease have been reproducible, since the focus is a unified driving cause and not the scatter-shot of genetic side effects. For example, here are two studies that were published in June 2015 from two different labs (one in Europe, one in America) that got essentially the same results, independently.
