  1. re. Marcotte: Why should cooking be “joyful”? Most of life isn’t. It’s astonishing, I know, but if you’re responsible for a family you kind of have to feed them.
Doing a little cooking is not a huge deal. I say this as the world’s worst improvisational chef. I swear, if you’re living in a “’50s-era sitcom” (cliche much, Mandy? I love the way the link over those words in that article goes to some random picture of black-and-white-timey people, gasp, sitting around a table. It’s probably from a Jimmy Cagney movie) – if you’re living in the nightmare/evil/uberbad ’50s, and the most onerous thing you have to do in life is knock together a few casseroles a week or something, you’re really lucky.
Also, if you can’t afford the odd vegetable and you spend your indoor life in a cheap motel being stalked by cockroaches because you’re too dumb to figure out how to buy insecticide, stop having kids. Contrary to what we keep being told, birth control is readily available and quite cheap.
As somebody likes to say, we need a famine.

  2. It pains me to agree with her, but…
    I hate cooking.
It interrupts my workday just when I’m getting a second, productive wind.
Never mind flying cars. (Which already exist; they’re called helicopters…)
I want those pills-for-food they ate on the Jetsons.

  3. I heard this. Agreed he is not a Conservative. He revealed himself stupid by saying Harper is not pulling his weight internationally because he is not close to Obama. Ha! No one is! Also, Mulroney has the Canadian liberal genuflection impulse to the UN.
It was Mulroney who, thank God, caused the break up of the Liberal-in-blue-suites party.

  4. Mulroney was a liberal in a conservative suit. Harper will soon pass him in time in office,I think next month.

  5. My gut instinct about Mulroney was that he understood what conservatism was all about but had that handicap I call the Quebec political bug.
He obsessed over his own legacy at the detriment to the country, the government, and the party. If a name could be given to his actions it would be that he was trying to out do Trudeau at being Trudeau.
Although he was always looking over his shoulder at the Trudeau legacy and dearly wanted to have a bigger historical benchmark, he and to the same extent Joe Clark, resent the fact that Harper in spite of the road blocks thrown at him by the Laurentian Elite, has remained PM for three terms and gained electorally each time. But rather than make note of this achievement, the elites continue to complain how Harper is doing things they don’t like. The real irony here is that the media that gleefully reported on Mulroney in an extremely bad light for years now practically put him on a pedistal if he’s even slightly critical of PMSH.

Yeah, when the belly button gets close to the backbone there’s a lot less attention paid to the chatter of opinions, and a lot more attention paid to actual, wealth producing, work.

  7. Sounds like Amanda Marcotte doesn’t know how to organize her time well, or know how to cook easy meals.

  9. ‘Russia’s intervention in Ukraine isn’t madness; it’s a rational, realist response to what it correctly perceives as a geopolitical threat right there in its own backyard.’

In fact, as we have consistently argued on spiked, the crisis in Ukraine owes far more to Western meddling than Russian. In fact, for the past 20 years, Western leaders have thoughtlessly, blunderingly provoked and frightened Russia over Ukraine. They have tried to pull Ukraine into the orbit of the EU, if not the EU itself. They have issued the half-baked offer of NATO membership to Ukraine, while simultaneously withdrawing it. And they have persistently, and self-aggrandisingly, talked of ‘promoting democracy’ in Ukraine and promulgating ‘Western values’. And what has made this so dangerous, what has led the region to the precipice, is that those selfsame Western actors pushing this policy-triad in the Ukraine don’t even recognise their intervention, their meddling, their clueless interference in Russia’s neighbour and one-time ally, for what it is: a provocation and a threat to Russia.

“Stunning and Scary Aerial Photos of Erupting Volcano in Iceland Shooting Lava 500ft in the Air”
“The photos below were taken from a helicopter yesterday, and show a fissure nearly 2 miles in length spewing lava as high as 150m (~500ft) in the air. Even from the air, it was an intense experience.
“I […] came very close to [the volcano],” Belegurschi told us when we asked permission to share the photos. “We took the doors off, so we could actually feel the heat from the volcano! My face was burning :).”
Only an Icelandic photographer with a thing for volcanoes would put a smiley face after the phrase “my face was burning,” and we love him a bit more for it. Here are the rest of the images he shot while in the air over the volatile volcano:…”

  12. Wondering if the lost video end part was because her pasta was a big lump?
Who cooks pasta this way? Cooks in 8 mins, on med when the water is at a boiling point. Her method ensures the bottom of the strands of pasta are well cooked before the tops even hit the water, lol!
Not to mention she contaminated everything with raw chicken bacteria and whats with cooking with this spray stuff in non stick pans?
Never cook with pepper or salt on raw meat…only use at the end for ‘flavor’. She sure likes her processed cheese, er what’s left of it that is.
Didn’t anyone tell her it tastes better when sprinkled on AFTER the three ingredients are to make the meal? For flavor … not as a sauce thickener, wow.

  13. ” People in the West swallow this sort of thing because they have learned not to criticize the religions or cultures of minorities too critically for fear of being called a racist”- Aayan Hirst Ali, Infidel.
I just finished this book today. Her struggles with Islam are a worthy read.
Even though it was written ten years ago the parallels between the Netherlands and Canada today are frightening. As much as I respect PMSH, he must stand up and be counted.
Islam is evil. There are no ifs, ands, or buts, about it. That is the nature of the beast.
A society will only flourish fully when men and women have equal opportunity. Islam does not permit that. Muslims must submit to Allah.
Allah wrote the rules to favour his side. It is not even close. Men rule, women obey.
My simplistic take on this is to compare society to a teeter-totter. If you have a large person on one end, this will be the dominant one that controls the movement, but the teeter-totter does not function as intended.
We need strong leaders that are not afraid to speak the truth. If not,Canadians are in for a lot more grief than necessary.
Our natives are being led down a garden path that can only end in misery.
    Our immigration policies are dysfunctional.
All cultures are not equal. Some should never be propped up, they should be dismantled.
    We have become too comfortable.
The next generations will pay dearly for our reluctance to take off the moral blinders.
