  1. The Costa Concordia is a perfect metaphor for the European Union . . . arrogant, out of e people touch leadership leading the ship of state onto the rocks of financial ruin and then abandoning the people while taking care of themselves first.
So European. Time for the Germans to re-arm, re-conquer and just run the place.

  2. This should go beyond the cowardly captain up to the top management that is busy hanging him. Any local transport company can track 100’s of trucks via GPS, and take a pretty good guess on how many cups of coffee the driver had during his last break at a diner. A cruise company can’t tell if a ship is 4 miles off course and radio someone? They knew this was habitual.

  3. Time to put a cap on the size of these cruising monsters. It might also be a good idea to research the credentials and history of the Captain before boarding one of these death traps.

  4. Hmmmmmm.
Captain runs his ship aground, and sinks it.
Captain flees and leaves passengers to drown.
Sounds like the CEOs of AIG, Lehman, Fannie, Freddie, Countrywide, and Bear Stearns.
The DIFFERENCE in this case, is that the Captain will not get a $100 Million bonus.
And the day BEFORE he sunk the ship, the Captain did not short Carnival stock.
Obviously, the ship was not “too big to fail”.

  5. Schettino: Product of EU (Obama swoons) style philosophy.
Sullenberger: Product of Reagan (Obama cries) style philosophy.
Who do YOU want to lead America?

  6. I think you would have a better chance with “Capt Jack Sparrow”. At least you knew this character was rogue.
Capt Schettino after repeated directives by rescue personnel to assume his duties, utterly and completely failed. The man is a moral incompetent who is responsible for at least 11 deaths and 23 missing.
Is ‘keel hauling’ still a legitimate punishment?
    Cheers

  7. Typical Eyetie. If it doesn’t involve pasta and wine,or sleeping with somebody elses wife, then men(?) desert.

    Robert Robert Robert.
STOP citing that left wing drivel mongering Wikipedia.
are you a left wing mole here at SDA?
or maybe just a typical right wing hypocrite.

Robert ain’t no hypocrite,eh? He just cites Wiki so you leftards will be able to comprehend the drivel. The rest of us go to other sites/news sources for the real story.(Sorry for feeding the troll. Need more java)

  8. blame Obama. As the oceans cease to rise. ha

    100 years after the Titanic,
even God couldn’t sink that ship.

kinda reminds me of the Euro..

  9. Captain first off the ship and abandoning the passengers on a European ship happened before in 1991 on the MTS Oceanos. In that case the music group supervised the rescue – the crew having long gone. Air force pilots rescued every passenger, including a few washed out to sea.

  10. Re: Sinking ship.
Once heard a saying that says: “Every rat deserts a sinking ship.”
Even the Pontiff can’t save that poor rodent right now!

  11. Only 34 casualty’s?
Pretty good odds considering there were 4,197 souls on board.
?Ever ride in an Italian cab,
    the odds are much worse..

  12. At the start of WWII, when Churchill was informed that the Italians had allied with the Germans he said, “it’s only fair, they were on our side last time”.

  13. Those Italians need to work on that courage thing. That anyone died on a ship 100 yards from shore that took over an hour to sink reeks of stupidity and incompetence. The passengers were waiting for the crew to do something but the crew had already booked off. Manslaughter? How about murder?

  14. Interesting thing is if sully had been flying a Boeing it would have let him try to start the engines. The Airbus has a “fail safe” that prevented him from doing so. That’s why if it isn’t Boeing I’m not going.

  15. The silver lining is that we should now insist that the Vancouver based cruise chip industry be banned – too much risk of an oil spill. If the indians want to ban tankers, then we should ban cruise ships.
When the economic costs are brought home to the city folks and all the people that make their living off the cruise ship industry, they might not be so fast to support their aboriginal buddies.

  16. A true hero Sully!
However, it needs to be pointed out: abandoning ship was not an option, tho I’m sure that if he could have, he wouldn’t have. You sort of intuit this about his character, don’t you, after observing his post-crisis humility.

  17. Not quite correct Me No Dhimmi…..abandoning ship certainly WAS an option for Sully once the plane was in the Hudson.
He walked the plane twice after everybody else was off and tried to verify that there was nobody else onboard, and he made sure that there was nobody behind him.
    A TRUE professional.

  18. When you are done with the Italian captain who abandons his crew and passengers ….
You may be interested in some Italian second world war rifles … never fired only dropped once.

Thanks nold, I spewed coffee on my screen and am still laughing.

  20. The conduct of the Captain aside I am wondering who exactly managed the evacuation of the +/- 4100 people who did safely survive? Or did they manage that on their own?
That may be the bigger story.

  21. syf:
Toronto was about 10% Italian in the late 50’s, early 60’s – thousands of masons working here in the building frenzy. The Italian stereotype was certainly in full bloom when I was a child – burly, hirsute father, mama looking after many children, and grandmama in an omnipresent black dress.
Today, it’s about 4% Italian (IIRC); after the UK, the next most popular place of origin is Southeast Asia. Haven’t checked recently, but I believe Chinese origin alone is about 10% in the GTA, while India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh combine for nearly the same amount. There still are Italian pockets in Toronto (St. Clair W., for example), but they are dwarfed by the multiple Chinatowns, “Little Indias”, etc.

  22. The Italians could just do a “Canadian” when faced with deviant behavior. They could make the good Captain a Canadian Senator. Poor little boys that like to watch others die from a safe distance

  23. Thanks Kev.
I like Italians … my barber, my boss, my baker are all Italian.
Guess it’s like Greeks … all the good ones left.

  24. Wasn’t the captain entertaining passengers when the ship hit the rocks. What about crew members on the bridge? Aren’t they aware of their course?
Do they not have charts on board? Let’s wait for the inquiry.

  25. “” Do they not have charts on board? Let’s wait for the inquiry. “”
no need to wait, the boat was already Titaniced
and the recording of the “COWARD” has been released
he was showboating and sunk the b1tch, end of story…and this type of bullsh1t is very typical of a large segment of the eyeties

  26. “he is a hero who saved over 4000 lives.”
Now you don’t even need to vote present for the participation award.

  27. The only reason it was not worse is their was an off duty real Captain, who took over the whole rescue operation. Mean while the coward gets all the press.
The Crew even mutinied against Captain clueless. As he fell into the life boat ( Like anyone believes that).
“Sully” Sullenberger made no excuses, just did his job. Now thats a man who commands respect.
‘Only a disgraceful man would have left all those passengers on board’: Hero captain who co-ordinated evacuation slams Schettino

  28. Not even an honourable mention? Tough crowd. Excerpted from my comment 2 days ago;
Posted by: otterdriver at January 17, 2012 12:38 AM
“…the focus should be on the complete ineptitude of the Captain and crew (waiters and cabin service staff excepted). Captain Sullenberger – who rode a double engine failure into the Hudson – exemplifies the role of a Captain, he was the last man off not only the plane, but also the life raft after ensuring the safety of all his passengers and crew. His crew performed perfectly as well, iirc.
It shouldn’t matter if you’re driving a bus, plane, train or boat; If the safety of your passengers isn’t your highest priority, then you’ve chosen the wrong profession. I wouldn’t hire the Captain of that cruise ship to tie my canoe to a dock, he’s proven he isn’t cut out for responsibility…”

  29. otterdriver – the internet never forgets; but people who read the internet forget stuff all the time.

  30. So he trips and falls into the lifeboat, right beside the second and third officers. What a coincidence. Perhaps they, too, tripped and fell. Not into the sea beside the lifeboat, but right into those prime seats in the boat.
This man can’t captain a boat, he won’t admit the truth, and he can’t even lie convincingly.
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/italy/9022170/Costa-Concordia-captain-says-he-tripped-and-fell-into-lifeboat.html
No wonder they’re calling this man the “Chicken of the Sea”.

  31. They say truth is stranger than fiction. Undoubtedly, it is. “I tripped and fell into the lifeboat?” No Hollywood scriptwriter would have dared put something so silly into a movie — before this tragedy, that is.
You can’t make this stuff up.
