Reader Tips

Tonight’s amusement en route to the Tips is a pleasant, easy-listening song from the late seventies. Buoyed at one point by the plaintive, womanly, wailing vocals of slide-guitar whiz David Lindley, here’s Jackson Browne and his band performing a two song medley consisting of Browne’s Stay and Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs’ 1960 hit Stay (Just a Little Bit Longer).

  1. Thanks EBD. He is one of my favourites but then I like Doug and the Slugs. I like to drive to Jackson Browne on those wide open spaces on the secondary highways or anywhere in Wyoming or Montana off the interstate. May see another vehicle in a half hour or so.

  2. Even in the Telegraph, rational and wide-awake = Far Right:
“Far-Right party poised to take first seats in Sweden’s parliament.”
“Mainstream politicians, deeply troubled by the party’s success, have been forced to promise that they wouldn’t under any circumstances go into coalition with the Sweden Democrats…(party leader) Jimmie Åkesson has won support by saying what for decades most Swedes have considered unthinkable…”
Åkesson: “Today’s multicultural Swedish power elite is completely blind to the dangers of Islam and Islamification.”

  3. A momentous day for the Church in the UK and around the world:
John Henry Cardinal Newman, once a revered Anglican then a misunderstood Catholic convert, is beatified today! He is now Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman! Huge crowds greet Pope Benedict XVI and participate in an open-air mass in Birmingham. Faith alive!

(Avoid Canadian coverage which dwells on the very few anti-Catholic, anti-pope demonstrations and on the divisive issues in the church. What these media idiots should understand is that these divisive issues are precisely what is tearing the Anglican Church apart and why so many are leaving it for the Catholic Church, with its Magisterium, and other churches where orthodoxy is honoured.)

  4. Absolutely, batb. The media coverage I’ve heard/read has seamlessly managed to lump in the various and sundry prog-west anti-Catholic protesters with the anti-West Moslem threateners, as if they comprise a single concerted force of beneficent opposition to some putatively unjust Western legacy. The message, between the lines, is, ‘we are all united in our opposition to the Pope.’ This lack of differentiation in coverage is a bellwether, and is (should be) disturbing to any Westerner who’s wide awake.
On a – highly – related note, Mark Steyn gives an funny, eloquent, stirring, and ultimately important speech (MP3, audio only, *very* quick loading for those on slow connections) in front of an audibly delighted audience at the Danish Free Press Society. A must-listen for SDA readers.

  5. National Post, Thursday. Letter to the editor from Dr. Danielle Martin, chair, Doctors for Medicare, Toronto.
Subject: an OECD study on Canada’s medicare system. [scroll down to the bottom of the linked page]
    http: //www.nationalpost.com/m/opinion/blog.html?b=fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2010/09/16/todays-letters-it%E2%80%99s-not-just-the-feds-who-want-to-take-over-the-habs
Martin: “… the OECD notes that Canadian medicare offers top-notch care, and calls for governments to fund more services to create an even more comprehensive health-care system.”
The original purpose of medicare was to fund “medically necessary” services. Not “more services to create an even more comprehensive” system, i.e., Big Government for its own sake. Even “medically necessary” varies from province to province, which puts the lie to it.
Martin: “The OECD praises Canada’s medicare system for its cost controls and its focus on equity, which gives our system a critical advantage over the systems of other countries.”
“Accordingly, the report notes that Canadians attach a great importance to the medicare system as a foundation for shared pan-Canadian values of a just society.”
Standard left-wing drivel. One neck for one noose. The focus should be on individual health, not “equity”.
Martin: “Far from abrogating medicare, the OECD recommends a dramatic expansion of public health-care services to improve access and to control the fastest rising costs, which are largely outside the public medicare system.”
Then maybe they’re not “medically necessary”?
Note the emphasis throughout on “cost controls”, as if it’s a bad thing for people to spend their money on things they want, in the quantities they want.
Rising costs currently outside medicare should be no concern of the system’s advocates. It’s like if vitamin C pills suddently doubled in price. Why should medicare-pushers care?
The reason, of course, is control: They want as much of the health sector as possible under political control (and they hope to run the political show themselves) because they are advocates of coercion rather than freedom.

  6. Great comment, EBD.
In the shower I was thinking about all of this “we are all united in our opposition to the Pope[/Christianity]” stuff and was meditating on this:
The Christian belief that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life is often referred to as “the scandal of particularity” because Christians are clear that their sense of loving God and loving their neighbour as themselves is dependent upon the Rock of their faith, Jesus Christ.
If the world looks with eyes, unbenighted by bigotry and hatred, at the legacy of this belief, it sees societies, though not perfect, ordered to care for not only the strong and powerful but, in particular, the weak and the infirm, the lonely and the outcast; societies where equality before the law is sacrosanct and where men AND women have rights and responsibilities and share equally in civil life.
Now, let’s look at the particularity of the Muslim faith: absolute belief in Mohammed and his pronouncements, absolute opposition to infidels and an obligation to rid the world of them, absolute subjugation of females, and an obligation to impose Sharia law on any society in which Muslims live. We are witnessing creeping Sharia in every Western democracy.
So, why, in the eyes of progressives (sic), is the particularity of the Christian faith an abomination that society needs to rid itself of, whereas the particularity of the Muslim faith is not only OK but is to be encouraged through lawfare, usually against Christians on the part of our Human Rights (sic) Commissions, and the acceptance of Sharia Law?
Progressives seem to have their priorities completely upside down and inside out. The Judeo-Christian dispensation over the centuries has given the Western world its democratic institutions and far-reaching freedoms and human rights for all, whereas Islam has created tyrannies where most of the population is illiterate and lives in poverty and where women have no rights.
Perhaps the progressives should be asking themselves why so many Muslims are leaving their own countries to come to the West, whereas very few people are emigrating from the West to Islamic theocracies in the ME.
Acceptance of Islam and Sharia Law as progressives, through their hatred of Christianity, take an axe to the root of Western Civilization, is not going to result in a freer, more compassionate society.
    Just the opposite.
    Kyrie Eleison.

“Documentary on “Turncoat” Dosanjh Labeled As Anti-Sikh Propaganda”
“The World Sikh Organization of Canada is concerned that a new film highlighting a “turncoat” Liberal MP’s claims that Canada harbours a Sikh extremist movement will prompt another round of racist attacks on Canada’s more than 400,000 Sikhs, reported the Globe and Mail newspaper.
Travelling Light: A Journey with Ujjal Dosanjh was shot over the last four years by Meera Dewan, who has done more than 30 documentaries for the Indian government. The film premiered in New Delhi Sept. 9 at a screening that included senior Indian government officials and is expected to air in Canada on Omni Television.
Dewan told the Globe and Mail that the film was inspired by Dosanjh “…speaking up against the Sikh violence still brewing” in Canada.
WSO President Prem Singh Vinning says there is no evidence of a Sikh extremist movement in Canada, but the Liberal politician’s persistent rhetoric is causing a backlash for Canadian Sikhs.
“We see an upsurge in hateful comments about Sikhs every time Mr. Dosanjh claims there is extremism here,” Vinning says.”

  16. Well, in my mind, Hans, I shower with a whole lotta people!!! That’s the closest I get to kinky … 😉

  17. The leftists don’t want a freer, more compassionate society – they want to disrupt society through a promiscuously generous welfare state, strangling regulations on productive people, and making racism an offense. Remember the “political correctness agenda”?
As for Sweden, I would wait and see before getting too excited about the rise of the “right”, in order to find out whether they’re pro-capitalist or its opposite, socialist (of the “nationalist” variety).
