Reader Tips

In 2004 Ray Davies, former frontman for The Kinks, was shot in the leg by a mugger in New Orleans. He fully recovered (a doctor reassured him that New Orleans is “the best place to get shot” because ER staff “had plenty of practice” treating gunshot wounds) and wrote tonight’s selection, a wry take on the uneasy relationship between restless, low-income locals and cash-waving, well lubricated tourists. From 2005, here’s Ray Davies performing The Tourist.

  1. Change we must believe in
Change has come to the Middle East. Over the past several weeks, multiple press reports indicate that Turkey is collaborating militarily with Syria in a campaign against the Kurds of Syria, Iraq and Turkey.
Turkey is a member of NATO. It fields the Western world’s top weapons systems.

  2. Shirley Sherrod describes Andrew Breitbart:
“I think he would like to get us stuck back in the times of slavery. That’s where I think he would like to see all black people end up again.”

  3. Take one of them – Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares – and call them racists.” – JournoList member Spencer Ackerman.
    Clifton B, at AnotherBlackConservative:
“This is the exact ploy being used against Tea Party activists. I guess they decided to mothball it for later use. What is astounding is that none on the listsev objects to making up racism, they only object to whether or not the strategy will backfire on Obama. Given the racial tensions that already exist in this nation, I find it a particularly evil to add to that tension by making stuff up for political gain.

  4. Thanks Vit. I watched the show but I don’t remember much other than the opening theme. The one thing that struck was the architect. The mannerisms and face of someone I can’t place but I recognize the older edition as a comedian.

  5. Just saw an ad for the ABC IPad app while watching TV.
It’s called “Spin It”. Network news app, “Spin It”. Irony is lost on them, apparently.

  6. Today, the SCC decided that charter breaches were worthy of financial compensation. How does this apply to freedom of speech and the Canadian Human Rights Commission industry?
I hope they sleep well tonight, by tomorrow they’ll have heard of it, friday being, well, friday, and them being, government employees.

“Strip searches are inherently humiliating and degrading, regardless of the manner in which they are carried out,” Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin said in the written ruling.”
and so are restrictions on free speech Bev… There’s no *asterisk beside any of the charter rights. I’ve looked.

  7. EBD, interesting like about Eric Margolis. From it and the comments therein I “learned” two things:
    1. The Toronto Sun is now a “far right” party. I sense that means that if you’re not a card carrying communist then you’re “far right”!
    2. All Tea Party participants are fascists.
Interesting times we live in, boys & girls!

  8. The poll that Gunney 99 is directing all to, is a poll on Conrad Black. An interesting poll,IMHO, would be one that asked;” Who would you prefer as a neighbour,Omar and his kinfolk,or Conrad and his people ?”

The results of such a poll would be split on political beliefs. However, most people, again IMHO,privately would choose the better neighbourhood over the jihadists.

“I’m going as licorice with eyes” …Darn.I was going to do that…I’ll go as a tar baby,a big tar baby with eyes…Ooh,that’s bad ….I’ll go as a stealth bomber that will bring death to both little Satan, and big Satan….yeah, that’s the ticket… But how about a stealth bomber that will take care of the Mohammeds that make us dress like this?

    Sorry,went off on a tangent.

  9. Part of my above post went astray. It dealt with the possibilities of an islamic masquerade party.

  10. Anyone else think Bourque is either running up to another shot at lieberal higher office, which is like renting the basement of an outhouse, or is the demented soul just so jealous of Harper he uses his do-diddly news site to make Piss tanks Travers Mcallum and Simpson happy. He used to have some coherant news, now it is Toronto Star quality shit. Stick to the pride parades Bourque.

  11. Nah, Bourque’s interest is in car racing. He’ll do whatever it takes to get a seat somewhere important and advertise it once he gets it.
Remember: the bourque.org webpage auto-refreshes itself every 60 seconds – this enables him to claim billions of readers every day (and fool advertisers).

  12. Ref the musical selection: The Kinks were one of the greatest bands of all times. I have seen them live on two different Canadian tours. They were very much an English band, (like the Who IMO) unlike the Rolling Stones who had a definie American Blues sort of thing. I saw a interview with Ray Davies a while ago. He was as proud an Englishman as you could find. Unlike all the other rich people who fled England in the sixties he wouldn’t. Now despite being shot while traveling in the US, he says he will never go back to England.
Also, I saw an obit in the paper the other week for Peter Quaife, who was their original bassist. After he left the Kinks, he was living anonymously in Belleville Ontario working as an editorial cartoonist for the local paper.

  13. You should play “Well Respected Man” for Ray and tell him it’s not irony.
They say a neo-con is a liberal who has been mugged by reality. Sometimes the mugging is literal but the epiphany never takes hold.

  14. So now it’s ok to talk to the Taliban: ulanov @ 01:37.
Watch the Letters page for responses to this idiot. Things change in war and the so called Taliban are no where near the force they were at the beginning . Throwing in the towel when your enemy is strongest is capitulation, but only a “peace activist” type would not see this. Osamma himself said the people would choose the stronger horse. Now there is a chance they will choose peace with the West.

  15. Two interesting articles on CF35, pro:
    http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/fighter+jets+best/3317585/story.html
LGen(ret’d) Watts does a good job of going over factors/issues/technology, arguing there are no realistic alternatives out there (he doesn’t list them, but an honest appraisal of competitors proves him right). That only leaves the arguments that we don’t need to replace the CF18s or a 5th generation fighter is unnecessary going forward.
    and con (sort of):
    http://www.nationalpost.com/todays-paper/worth+just+know/3316749/story.html
Marc Garneau argues we don’t know if CF35 best, because we haven’t subjected it to what he deems an efficient procurement system. Hmm, the same process that resulted in the obsolete before even being built Sikorsy Sky Junk to replace the Sea King? I for one don’t share his belief in a change in results or integrity in a competition.
We need military equipment that can operate with allies but also independently. Even if CF18s could fly beyond 40 years, they would perish in the next generation of air warfare. The Sikorsky, still not delivered, cannot properly protect a Canadian warship operating alone or on station. Procurement failed miserably in this example (albeit with obvious political interference).
Surely many will disagree – IMO those nuclear subs shelved in the 80s would come in handy right now.

  16. Ulianov (re: nuke subs): “Sure, except we can’t even man our current surface fleet, or get parts that are critical to operational effectiveness…necessitating the borrowing of these parts from ships that aren’t sailing due to a scheduled work period.
Maybe so. Subs have smaller crews, for example, so you can’t look at operator shortages in isolation. Point taken though.
“Oh, and speaking of effective procurement, how are our almost new tanks doing?
    Just fine, thanks:

What’s your point? I don’t recall saying Chretien era procurements for military were all bad. But, that EH101 cum Sikorsky was a whopper of a procurement disaster – obsolete inferior helicopter delivered much later (than EH101) for more money, not to mention spending $1B to not buy anything.

  17. The Toronto Star has a poll going on “Do you agree with the decision to scrap the long-form census?”
Go to “www.thestar.com” and scroll down on the right.

  18. As I was reading this it occurred to me Harper should pay attention to this. Its only a matter of time before we go back to a private model. Most Canadians now loath of public health semi-care. If any of the many polls taken show if true.
If England goes back to a private system that will break the NDP types, making them autocratic widows.
No more excuse that it can work. Best to repair ours now before we become like Briton’s.
    Total ineptitude.
Britain Plans to Decentralize National Health Care
    By SARAH LYALL
LONDON — Perhaps the only consistent thing about Britain’s socialized health care system is that it is in a perpetual state of flux, its structure constantly changing as governments search for the elusive formula that will deliver the best care for the cheapest price while costs and demand escalate.

  19. Ulianov, I would guess that you would hate PM Harper no matter what he did, am I right you leftist twat?
