Tonight’s featured song en route to the Reader Tips thread amounts to a heartfelt, sincere plea, one that we all make in our own way at critical points in our lives. Change the odd pronoun reference in the song and it could be made by a misunderstood child, or a spouse, or an employee, or a cop, or a rescuer with an outstretched arm. It’s a beautiful and very human song, any way you slice it. Here’s American Songwriter John Hiatt in a live performance of Have A Little Faith In Me. (h/t commenter batb)

Say it again. I dare you:
“Couples who insult each other over their physical appearance or make false accusations about infidelity face jail, under a new French law making ‘psychological violence’ a criminal offence.”

Yikes! I hope Canada doesn’t follow France’s lead. If I have to stop insulting my husband and start being nice to him all the time, he’ll think I’m either dying or having an affair. Maybe they’ll have to consider adding on a nagging and banter exception.
The Gulf of Mexico oil leak is still big news? ok, how about the Lake Maricaibo oil leak? … yeah, that’s what I thought…
http://devilsexcrement.com/2010/07/01/the-lake-maracaibo-oil-spill-is-sixteen-tomes-denser-than-the-one-in-the-gulf-of-mexico/
The BP oil leak is spilling about 60,000 bpd at worst, and the Gulf of Mexico is 615,000 square miles. … and we’re not certain still as to how much is being recovered so this really is a worst case #.
The PDVSA oil leak is spilling about 8,000 bpd, and Lake Maricaibo is 5,130 square miles. … and in all likely hood this leak is being under reported.
The BP spill is 0.097 bpd/square mile, into open sea / salt water.
The PDVSA spill is 1.56 bpd/square mile, into semi-enclosed brackish water.
Rafael Ramirez, Venezuela’s Minister of Energy states that the situation in Lake Maracaibo is far from an environmental disaster like the spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and is a result of a lack of maintenance by private oil companies in the past….(Bloomberg)
and more regarding Lake Maricaibo from Gustavo Coronel, petroleum geologist and (pre-Chavez) ex board member of PDVSA/Venezuela. He doesn’t often blog in english but it’s still written quite well…

“in 2009, Hugo Chavez had the bright idea to “nationalize” all contractors working in the lake, in order to preserve what he called “national sovereignty”. PDVSA moved to confiscate the three vessels that had been working to help them. Needless to say, these activities stopped…”

“Future unsure for Liberal candidate facing charges
After spending two nights in jail, a Liberal candidate for the next federal election in southwestern Ontario is free on bail, but his political future remains very much in question.
Steve Pickard, a Chatham, Ont., city councillor, and Liberal candidate for Chatham-Kent Essex, was released on $10,000 bail Wednesday.”

Great pick, EBD! 😉
John Hiatt is a severely underrated talent. There’s joy in his soul — and pain and longing. It’s all there.

As for the threads on police OK/police brutal, the message Bill Blair and David Miller seemed to be sending out (in addition to all of the confusion and not knowing what the hell they were doing in their Mayhem Metropolis) is that policing at any time is a crap game.
Lovely. Living in Toronto, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy and safe.
If Blair or Miller ever started singing Have a Little Faith in Me, I’d kick them where it hurts.

What, nothing newsworthy in Canada again?
Yawn, another day at post 2008 SDA.
Guess no one worries about HST, bill C391, Trois Rivere explosion etc.
Okay Aaron, I’ll bite. So what do you have for a tip on HST(Dippers increased ours by 2% here) bill C-391 or trois riviers…
I’ll try to fill the void with a link to an interesting juxtaposing analysis at Caledonia Wakeup Call:

“They discovered that – contrary to their assertion when I begged for help for Caledonia – they were indeed willing and able to aggressively investigate and protect civil rights abuses after all”

Just read in a customer copy of the BC birdcage liner, The Province, that the Indians want world-famous Stanley Park, renamed:
XWAYXWAY PARK.
The story indicated that city and provincials officials were backing the idea.
I say, NOWAYNOWAY.
Is there anything Indians ask for to which our esteemed leaders would say, “stuff it”?
Between the Islamists and the Injuns, we’re really in full retreat aren’t we?
> Between the Islamists and the Injuns, we’re really in full retreat aren’t we?
As long as a convicted terrorist ordered deported 20 years ago – Mahmoud Mouhammad Issa Mouhammad – lives in Brantford, ON – yes.
Feds have just demonstrated that they have $1 billion to blow on partying and 15,000 cops to guard them, so the excuses that they could not deport the terrorist for lack of resources are baloney.
Me No Dhimmi – Well, the Haida Indians renamed the Queen Charlotte Islands! The stupidity of doing this sort of name change thing challenges the sanity of Canadians. No one ever remembers the ‘new name’ because it is phonetically Russian (the Russian Missionaries in Alaska translated the language of Coastal Indian tribes into Russian – making the language phonetically correct in Russian! Alaska belonged to Russia until the Czar sold it to USA in 1867). We now get the spelling of Russia with name changes to Canada ‘reflecting’ something the North American Indians say that someone in their tribe said at some time in the forgotten past!
Places renamed in this fashion become non places because the name is never remembered, it has no meaning to English speaking people – a jumble of syllables have no meaning – so it becomes a pit stop a certain number of min or hours from a recognizable place – we do not understand Kilometers in our minds either so we use ‘driving time’ to replace miles in our minds. We have sat by and done nothing for years – maybe we should demand some accountability from those pandering M.P.s for a change, If it had not been for courageous Canadian soldiers those signs would ALL be in German or Russian and those M.P.s would be lounging in gulags on 400 calories a day. Those soldiers spoke English and a few spoke French, including the soldiers who were Native North American Indians.
Great editorial at NP on that POS Allan Rock initiating the letter to Ann Coulter and leting A. Houle take the heat. Typical Liberal coward.

Jema54: I noticed after the S2S highway reno was completed all the place name signs are now bilingual: Indian and English, with Indian on top if memory serves. I found it jarring.
Thanks for the little history lesson. I didn’t know about the Russian connection.
You also make a very interesting observation about what happens when new names can’t be fathomed by people speaking the dominant tongue.
