The Sound Of All Hell Breaking Loose: The Wang Affair

It starts…

… with the question of urban heat islands, and their effect on the temperature record. It is well known, and easily measured, that the centres of cities may be up to 4 C warmer at night than the countryside around them […]
The IPCC relied on a particular paper published in 1990 by Phil Jones in Nature that basically said the UHI effect was trivial, which in turn relied in large part on data from China supplied by professor Wang of Albany, State University of New York.
In describing this data, Jones et al. said “The stations were selected on the basis of station history: we chose those with few, if any, changes in instrumentation, location or observation times.” which in turn was based on the similar statement in Wang et al. “They were chosen based on station histories: selected stations have relatively few, if any, changes in instrumentation, location, or observation times…” The truth of these statements was essential for the papers to be valid, which in turn was relied on in part by the IPCC report. The problem is, they’re not true. And what’s more, somebody must have known it.
At first, nobody knew because the source data was (of course!) unpublished and unidentified. But because Phil Jones is in the UK and subject to FOIA, the Climate Audit crew managed after a fight to extract the list of weather stations from him. (One reason, no doubt, why he is so wary of FOIA compliance now!) This enabled the mathematician Doug Keenan and others to trace the Chinese weather stations used in the papers, and found that of the 84 stations used, there were in fact no records of station location for 49 of them, 8 had inconsistent histories, 18 had substantial relocations, 2 had single-year relocations, and only 7 were known not to have been relocated at all. Wang could not possibly have selected them on the basis claimed, and indeed there was other evidence that he knew of their problems in advance.

It caused the good Professor Wang no end of trouble until New York State University at Albany came to his rescue.

1. The urban heat island issue, as it pertains to surface station data, is more than significant; in the long run it will in all likelihood supplant the damning revelations of the CRU emails/data. The Hadley emails have certainly caused people to at least consider the fraudulence of the “science” of global warming, but the science of AGW had massive holes in it long before the Hadley data was leaked.
For those of you who have only recently come to SDA, or have only recently become aware via Hadley emails of the comprehensive fraudulence of the global warming promoters, the corruption of surface station data, i.e. temperature readings taken at particular measuring stations, is a critical issue. If you go through Kate’s numerous links in her archives you’ll see that the surface temperature-readings which have been used to justify the AGW theory, and it’s concomitant demands for the expenditure of potentially trillions of dollars, are, to put it mildly, badly – deliberately, mindfully – corrupted. It’s a sadly common occurrance thattemperature-measuring stations that were once in a grassy field were replaced by stations in asphalt parking lots, and/or beside large buildings, and, in more than a few instances, physically proximate to air-conditioning exhaust units, with the measured temperature differential being used by warmists as “evidence” for global warming.
Corrupt data, in other words, has been used as a justification for an international rent seeking, massively funded juggernaut, in just the same way that they Hadley emails show. While the Hadley emails helpfully point to the mindset behind such corruption, there’s much, much more to this fraud than just the Hadley emails.
The rest of us who have been keeping up on the – factual – corruption of temperature data, and the suppression of historical data showing no disastrous effects during previous, far hotter periods of time in recent history, including that which occurred during the Renaissance period, need to understand how important it is to not overplay, in the long-term, the CRU emails/data. Ride this story for as long as it’s efficacious to do so, but the emails aren’t the most important evidence. They certainlyshow in shocking detail the existence of a pervasive culture wherein credible, reasonable scientists were blacklisted, and their findings proscribed – written off – as not credible because they weren’t published in the very journals whose editorial process was, we now know, rigged, but the Hadley emails are not by any means the entire story, and it would be a mistake to put all our eggs in that basket.
The laggard and gatekeeping media is just now started to evince a coordinated line of defense which goes something like, “Ah yes, but those are merely a few emails from a particular research center, and these emails don’t obviate in any way the findings of thousands of other credible scientists over the years…”
The credibility to AGW science has been quietly and comprehensively exposed – to a minority of non-MSM-informed people – long before the Hadley emails. The emails may, in the long run, be what woke up a propagandized public, but the hard evidence of the fraudulence of the warmists goes far, far beyond the information contained in the Hadley emails.
Hopefully the emails will spur people to work backwards and start examining the hard and incontrovertible evidence against the validity of the AGW theorists. The battle hasn’t been about science at all, but about propaganda and vast amounts of selective funding.
Non-warmists have truth on their side, they just haven’t had their hands on the propaganda machine.
I don’t expect anyone to take that statement on faith, but I respectfully ask that all reasonable, thinking people do their own research, stop buying the “consensus” bullshit, and start drawing their own conclusions based on available evidence.
Just take a look at the last century, across various continents, and see what consensus wrought, and start drawing your own conclusions based on hard evidence. Don’t take anyone’s word for anything – you might be surprised by what you find.

What you have just stated…please send a copy to Harper. You are right on the money and it just might help him down the road.
Over the past week i have send him and my mp loads of info regarding the CRU scam, hoping it will help.

3. One of the problems, EBD, is that many of the political policies that have been driven by this pseudo science are already in place. Ontario for example, has already implemented its Green Energy Act, the purpose of which is to expedite the introduction of renewable energy sources by eliminating the clutter of environmental reviews and local municipal input. Which means in reality those ‘stinking giant fans’ are popping up throughout the rural landscape with nary a please or thank you. Onward to Hopenchangen!
Now in Kate’s words “it sucks to be us”. People are frustrated with a government that sacrifices health concerns and property value and democratic freedoms for the greater good of Gaiia. Now we are slowly realizing that scientist have lied to us, the politicians have misled us, the media has ignored us. Our gut was right all along.
Think that means we will wait patiently for a provincial election in a couple of years to install the next set of misleaders?
Yeah. A government that thinks Caledonia is small boys behaving badly will never figure it out.

4. One comment in the second linked article: “No surprise here with the U of Albany’s actions. They’re receiving millions of dollars to research global warming, and they don’t want to lose that gravy train in light of other budget cuts coming from the economically distressed State of New York.”
When robbing Peter to pay Paul becomes the foundation of public policy, Paul really hates it when someone calls him out and accuses him of malfeasance.

5. Thanks Al W, but I have no doubt – zero doubt – that Mr. Harper is absolutely, comprehensively aware at a cellular level of the precise nature and motivation of the entire AGW enterprise. It’s simply the case that he has an entirely different job than the rest of us, and I sometimes wish more people would understand this. If the PM were to jump ahead of public awareness by a few years, and to state in the most obvious terms the factual truth about the global warming scam, he would simply offend the propagandized electorate whom he relies on to remain in power, and he would in effect hand the policy reins directly over to those who, whether or not they are aware of the fraudulence of the scam, are nonetheless fully committed to implementing the biblical-scale money transfer using whatever powers they have at their disposal.
IMO anyone who opposes the climate-Moonies must – absolutely MUST – support Mr. Harper to the Nth degree – sorry, but it’s just that straight. There’s a massive, game-changing gambit going on as we speak, involving levels of game-theory we’re not entirely privy to, and the leader of a 30m nation cannot break the whole thing open; this is a western-world cultural battle that transcends borders. The long game entails opening up the propaganda-airwaves to factual truth; at which point when that happens, and the truth sinks in – and it may not happen for a few years – those who know the truth can actually express this truth while still holding the reins of power.
Chess players understand the devastating, end-game consequences of a feint, and for those who understand that, Stephen Harper is our man. Stephen Harper is Flava Flav, if you catch my drift. Let’s not ***k with his ***t while he’s doing his thang.
We’ll certainly have bad times, and he’ll have good times, doing things we cannot understand. But if we love him, we’ll forgive him, even though he’s hard to understand;. And if we’ll love him, we’ll be proud of him, ’cause after all he’s just a man.

6. What person living in the real world of the rural areas doesn’t understand the urban heat island affect. Who hasn’t heard the weather man call for “an overnight temperature of plus 4…colder in OUTLYING areas..there is a risk of FROST”. Alot of the temperature data is gathered at airports…lots of asphalt and cement there!!

7.
Paul really hates it when someone calls him out and accuses him of malfeasance
Nv53
The “FIST” of Peter is now clinched.. Paul has no place to hide… The AGW leadership have no Scientific Entergrity & everyone knows it’s a “cheap” fraud by marginal minds.
The Copenhagen smack down will be historic.. Unfortunately for most Americans the USA will pay a price for thier leadership role in the IPCC fraud, and other acts of high treason.
Good on Canada, China, Russia, India and all the other Countries that value Science. (THe British PM pissed all over himself)

8. EBD – many thanks for both comments – they are important.
On the issue of the political ramifications of the AGW/climate change agenda, it is clear that this scheme has been an open theft of wealth from the industrial countries and not about the environment.
Since it is a political agenda without scientific truth then, selling it to the public has been via propaganda. It’s been presented as science which was meant to reject dissent, but above all, in an apocalyptic and sin-based scenario, which was meant to also reject dissent.
That’s quite a powerful triad: science (aka truth); apocalypse, and the promise of redemption of sin to prevent the apocalypse.
A large proportion of the population, ever ready to accept authority and emotional tenacity, are entrapped in this propaganda. Therefore, Harper cannot ignore their beliefs; he has to go to Copenhagen because Obama (who is mindless) and also China, are going. He has to steer a neat course between the will of this electorate and the truth of our real world. Not easy.

9. I hereby dub the process of Government and MSM simply ignoring the mess “Tip-toeing Past The Open Sewer”
Public domain. Feel free to use.

10. I agree with EBD. It isn’t like a tap that leaks and you change a washer. It’s the end game and there are costs involved one way or the other. We give aid and it is announced at these types of events. That is not agreement on climate change, just a continuation of our role. The alternative could have been Dionne.

11. I’ll add my own small measure of agreement with and support of EBD’s comments, particularly with regard to our Prime Minister.
We have to understand that he is in a very long game and that while we would dearly love to hear the swish of swords through the air, we will have to settle for the eventual surgical use of silent daggers.
Figuratively, of course.

Agreed……patience….
The Mills of the Gods grind slowly…but the grist is exceedingly fine.
Figuratively?……Nahhh not now…there is a debt of honour involved…..
Where is Pinochet when you need him?

13. Professor Wang?
Are we in a movie or what?
It just kills me how many of these villans are so aptly named like a Jennifer Lynch.
